Introduction

3639

Wielding twin, scythe-like blades, the she-reaper known as the Dark Lady has moved through the Legion's ranks like a shadow of death. For soldiers seeking to buck up their courage, she is a punch-line: "Careful you don't find the Dark Lady," they joke to their carousing friend. But even these jokes are accompanied by a shudder. Swift and cold and lethal as the frozen winds off the steps, black as the cloud-choked night, she is no laughing matter.

Role

The Dark Lady is a hardcarry, and if played well, she can crush any late-game hero with farm. Surviving, ganking and killing is your job.

Pro's and Con's

Pro's

-Able to crush enemies late-game.
-Quite hard to gank (Silence, Slow and Leap).
-Good ganker.
-Very hard to organise ganks when The Dark Lady ulted.
-Awesome attack-animation for lasthitting.
-Nice stat-gain for an Agility carry.
-Leap paths.

Con's

-Not really a pain in the ass untill late-game.
-Due to low HP, when disabled you are very fragile.
-If focussed, you are a Dark, but Dead Lady.

Abilities

Dark Blades

3640

His main ability. Due to the 110% Damage extra you deal massive damage. Combined with Charging Strikes you destroy people in seconds. The silence makes this one of the biggest counters against casters, since casters without abilities is like EM-players. FAIL.

Taint Soul

3641

This is your ganking skill, slowing opponents, Dark Blades, Charge and you kill the opponent.

Charging Strikes

3642

Very nice ability for farming, ecspecially on late game. Just charge the creeps and you killed the lane. The attack speed bonus is redicilous combined with your insane damage-input with Dark Blades. This combo + Elder Parasite is oneshitting that Witch Slayer in your lane.

Cover of Darkness

3643

For ganking or almost starting team-fights, this is the best ability you have. When you aren't playing against a team with voice communication, this can cause some trouble, making them an easier prey, since they'll probably spread out and run.

Itembuild

Start:

http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_LoggersHatchet.jpg225 + http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_IronBuckler.jpg250+ http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_HealthPotion.jpg100= 575g.

This gives you a quite decent way to farm. With the extra damage if the Logger's Hatchet you should have almost any lasthit. Even if they harass you, Iron Buckler blocks out most of the damage. When getting in problems, your best friend the HP-pot is there. Letting a support in your time buy a courier, so he can fetch your consumables or items for you.

Early game:

http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_LoggersHatchet.jpg+ http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_IronShield.jpg + http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_Regen.jpg + http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_HealthPotion.jpg+ http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_Marchers.jpg

-The Logger's Hatchet gives you an incredible boost for farming. 32% more damage on Creeps is completly awesome early game. This is totally worth it cost since it allows you to gain way more and way easier.
-I use to pick Iron Shield since it does what it should do: making me get less damage. The +6 Agility bonus is just a bonus, +6 damage is nice too. Why I dont stick with the buckler and just get an +10 Agility item, because this is cheaper and the 100% block chance makes you happy, since it reduces the amount of consumables you have to buy.
-Sustainer gives you everything you need. A little damage, HP regen and Mana regeneration. You need way less consumables, and you don't waste so much time going back to base for mana or health. Also, The Dark Lady has 3 abilities to use early game to gank, and since she doesn't have the biggest manapool in-game, the mana regen is very nice.
-Health Potion, seems quite obvious to me. You don't have to go back to the base which costs a lot of time and it just costs 100 gold.
-Boots, reduces the downtime of moving through spots, and when they try to gank you in the jungle or in your lane, having this extra speed gives you a higher chance to escape.

Your inventory should look like this in around 10-15 minutes. Boots for escaping ganks, Iron Shield for the +6 AGI and 100% block, Sustainer for your Runed Axe.

Mid game:

http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_LoggersHatchet.jpg + http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_IronShield.jpg +
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_Steamboots.jpg + http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_Splash.jpg + http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_ElderParasite.jpg

-Logger's still in my inventory to keep the farming up, even while pushing or farming jungle.
-Iron Shield is still in my inventory since I can't replace it with a better item (yet).
-Steamboots (STR) in the beginning for the AS, MS and for the extra HP. When I know I have enough HP to survive ganks, I put them on agility.
-Runed Axe is really your core item imo. This gives you massive farming abilities, having quite much damage-input and the regen keeps your HP and MP up.
-Elder Parasite. I prefer this above Whispering Helmet because you deal enough damage with your Dark Blades and Runed Axe already. The insane high AS you get with Elder Parasite makes you lifestealing so rediculous much HP that you don't really need a big HP item on this.

When you have farmed your Runed Axe (~20 mins) you straight go for your steamboots, and then you get your Elder Parasite. At this time you have a quite big damage input and you can start ganking. When you ganked or you just want to keep farming to destroy end-game, farm Ancients and get some more money. You should be atleast 1-2 levels higher than the rest of your opponents/team.

End-game:

http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_Steamboots.jpg + http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_Splash.jpg + http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_ElderParasite.jpg + http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_IronShield.jpg + http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_Weapon3.jpg + http://honwiki.net/w/images/a/a2/Token_of_Lifeitem.gif(optional)

-Steamboots already explained above.
-Runed Axe already explained above.
-Elder Parasite already explained above.
-Iron Shield, imo you can just drop it since it doesn't has any use from now on. You could replace it with Shrunken Head, Behemoth's Heart or Wingbow, but that's your choice.
-Savage Mace finishes your itembuild. With this you are almost invincible, you destory enemies with your insane high AS and this finishes it off, since you will proc the +100 damage non-stop.
-Token of Life is just a occasional item. When you don't have it, for any reason, you could decide to get, as mentioned above, Behemoth's Heart, Wingbow or Shrunken head. When you got one of these items, I usually decide to save my money for buybacks.

At this point in the game you should kill your opponents in 5 seconds. Taint Souling, Dark Blades, Charging Strikes and Elder Parasite and you destroy even tanks in a extreme short time, due to your insane attack-speed and Damage from your Dark Blades ability.

You can always use your own item-build, but I think this is the basic-build for DL, since it gives you insane farming control and massive Damage-input. Possible items could be (I will rate them down on my own experiences):

http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_BehemothsHeart.jpg & http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_Immunity.jpg9/10
If you already have enough damage-input, you could decide to go for a little more survivability. Myself, I prefer to go Wingbow instead and if it's really getting close I save my money for buybacks.

http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_Lightning2.jpg 7/10
The AS and the proc is nice, but for this money I prefer Savage Mace due to more damage gain.

http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_StrengthAgility.jpg5/10
Just doesn't give you enough damage nor AS. You already have a slow and for this money you could better get a Runed Axe.

http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_Brutalizer.jpg3/10
You already have slows and silences, you don't need a stun. The enemy will be fast so down if played well that you shouldn't need a stun.

http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_HealthMana3.jpg2/10
You simply don't need this much HP/Mana Regen. For this money you could get way better items, that grant you damage. And that's where the carry is about.

http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_Silence.jpg1/10
What is this, I don't even. Nah, seriously. You already have a silence and the excuse 'But the +20% damage done nuke is really good'. The time Hellflower effect expired the target should be dead, so I really don't know where you are talking about.

How to: Farm.

As Dark Lady, the only thing you have to do in the first 20 minutes is farming. Try to lane with a support or stunner, like Electrician or Demented Shaman. The best way to farm is:

-Communicate with your lane partner. I use to make the deal that the support denies and that I lasthit.
-Call out for ganks. Let mid faceroll your opponents and that should give you atleast 30 seconds of free farm.
-When it's getting dangerous in your lane, for example pushing a lane into enemies tower, you move into the jungle. As carry should be farming 24/7. Pull creeps, stack them or simply kill them. the jungle.

Pulling ways:

3644

-You should pull the creeps when they just passed the 2nd tower. This anti-pushes the lane, but you get more exp and gold: gold and exp from the neutrals and from the enemy creeps.

3645

-You should pull the creeps when they reached your last tower (the north-west pull) and when they passed the tower for ~2.5 seconds, you can do the west pull.

How to: Carry

Farming is your main job as carry. Farm, farm and farm and end-game you will win because you kill any opponent in your way. Imo, the 'I took the kill because I'm the carry' is a valid answer. That 250 gold can just make the difference between dying or surviving, winning or losing. As carry you have to be a moron. Even if your team ****s it up in teamfights because it's 4v5, just farm farm farm. (Except if they are in your base already at the 15 minute mark. Do you play EM? If so, your argument is invalid).

Good Allies

The Dark Lady is a carry, any support with her is wonderful. But, for making succesfull ganks, you need 2 things. Disable and damage-input. Since The Dark Lady provides the damage, you need a disabler. That's why I think the most useful allies are:

Demented Shaman

http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/heroes/43/icon_128.jpg

The healing allows you to be auto-attacked for quite much by their ranged heroes. When trying to kill the opponent in your lane, DS slows him, you charge, Dark Blades on, Taint Soul if needed and you win.

Voodoo Jester
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/heroes/27/icon_128.jpg

Same as DS, the healing of Voodoo is a plus. Altough, that's not the reason I would like Voodoo with me. When stunning the enemies with his cocktail, you massive damage them. If done well, Voodoo's Cursed Ground will damage them so hard, that this can easily result in a Double Kill at level 6.

Puppet Master
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/heroes/91/icon_128.jpg

Disables! Holding the enemy, you charge and fully nuke. If he's not dead yet, Puppet does his Puppet Show and you win.

Electrician
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/heroes/9/icon_128.jpg

What to say. It's like above, when you have a disabler your only job is fully nuking the enemy. With Grip + Absorption and if necassery his ult, you, again, have a dead enemy.

Pebbles
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/heroes/22/icon_128.jpg

I guess you understand me now. Stunning, you charge and silence and if necessary Pebbles could throw the enemy in your tower or he throws you to finish him off.

Bad Enemies

All the good allies showed above are probably your worst enemies. Disabling you makes you an easy pray, since you have massive damage-input but very low HP, and when disabled people can nuke you down easily.

Witch Slayer
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/heroes/120/icon_128.jpg
Due to his heavy nuking abilities and stun, you are dead meat untill lategame if you aren't able to silence him.

Pyromancer
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/heroes/94/icon_128.jpg
Just as Witch Slayer, stated above here.

Accursed
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/heroes/40/icon_128.jpg
His shield and ultimate block your damage-input quite much. Even if you managed to get him down to 40% HP, his ult just pops up and at the time it's over, other enemies should've showed up already.

Maybe some useful match-ID's

Q&A

Q-What do you mean with 'being a moron' as a carry?
A-What I mean is that you shouldn't leave your farming spot everytime you team got ganked. If you come to help them every 3 minutes, you can't farm and then you aren't able to faceroll your enemies late-game. You should atleast farm untill you have your Runed Axe, then you can farm on and help your team the other time.

Thanks for reading this guide. I hope you learned anything from this. I actually decided to make this since I didn't saw any proper guide of The Dark Lady here, nor a Premium Guide, so I thought making a guide would help the people out that find The Dark Lady is hard playing.

I think there's some decent info though I'm not sure on the elder parasite. Also I think there's some misinformation here that may give people the wrong impression. For example, the part about your advice as a carry is particularly troubling for me. It's not your job as a carry to be a moron and just farm all day even if your team is getting trounced in a 4v5. As a carry, your job is to farm as much as you can possibly get away with. But being there for that critical team fight with such an amazing ult can be game changing and getting 3-4 kills will more than make up that farm/xp even if you don't get the last hit in for some reason. Hitting up that side lane or taking the ancient stack is your job but farming when your team needs you is just criminal IMO.

PS. You didn't mention one of the biggest con's to Dark Lady. Her "blink" paths.

Daeriaz`

Ah yes, thank you for your feedback. What I meant with 'being a moron' is that helping your team out all the time from early game on, isn't helping you to be a good carry lategame, since you are ruining your farming time. Untill atleast 20 minutes you should atleast be farming.

I'll add the blink path, and maybe add some pictures to it tomorrow.

Right, I figured you'd probably want to clarify a bit more than "it's ok to be a moron when you're a carry" as inevitably some idiots will get the wrong idea and assume they should jungle for 40 minutes and go out to super pwn.

I don't prefer the parasite tbh but I do get the rest of your recommended items just a whispering helm and some rings. But its a good guide all together.

-.- Get symbol of rage allready. You're very squishy from the start and that item=-30% lifetime. Not good. A symbol of rage on the other hand gives you ~500 hp, armor, 20 dmg and a freaking awesome lifesteal. Its way better than elder because any nuker can kill you. You're extremely team dependent with this build. And your average pub doesn't have that support. Not to forget the ancient stacking with whispering is pretty beast.

Daeriaz`

That's true, but rushing Symbol of Rage in the beginning costs a lot of money, and if you spend all your money on that, you cannot buy any good damage items to crush ur enemy.

Pretty bad item guide.

Elder parasite, even with its buff is a no no on almost all carries. Most of all you don't want to be dying.

You buy a Whispering Helm first, but that does not mean you need to rush Symbol of Rage. If nothing else, you will not be able to dominate creeps any more.

Shieldbreaker is better than Savage Mace in terms of damage almost always.

And you didn't mention Riftshards which are a good 3rd or 4th luxury item to buy.

Behemoth Heart is not Agility hero item, while Shrunken is Core most of the time.

I'm going to work on the item guide, and after a few read-througs I've come to the conclusion this indeed isn't a very good item-build for beginners. Omw to fix this in those inc. days.

- Elder + Zeal + Charged Hammer is not necessary. Remove the Elder. DL should be getting a Whispering to be upgraded to a Satanic (Symbol of Rage) later.

- DL is a very capable solo mid. I disagree with your skill build 99% (Ulti at level 10 is right...) regardless, but you should consider adding a solo build.

Instead of Elder, get another Runed Axe. I have played 1650+ games and built: Ghosts (Yes, Ghosts. Haters gonna hate), Whispering Helm (into Satanic), Runed Axe, Runed Axe, Runed Axe, Runed Axe/Shrunken (when against many stunners) and pulled off Quad-Kills with a single Charging Strikes.

Dark Lady is a ridiculously powerful hero when farmed, and it's easy to farm after getting the first runed axe. She is easy to play and gamebreaking from 20 minutes (which is when you should have your first Axe)

Gumbie

Just realised: You imply that you should have a Runed Axe at 20, but this is before boots. I can farm Ghosts, Runed and Iron Shield by 20 easily. No, this isn't Easy Mode. God damn...

CHANGELOG:

27-03

-Created The Dark Lady guide.

about elder paritise errrr i would think about that he will become to squishy and die its that simple i would get passive attack speed with dark lady not ep i would exchange that for something like whispering helm otherwise good guide love it :)

lifesteal is unnecessary for dark lady until late game, since with dark lady, you either instagib/scare off your opponent with your dark blades+ zeal combo, or you don't go in at all.
nullfire blade is great on dark because the agility stacks with your dark blades, plus the slow + manaburn while silenced is awesome.

Anything on nullfire blade? I always used to go for it with DL. It gives you mana which is pretty useful, +agi which is really nice, which gives about 95 damage with your skill active including the manaburn, plus another slow. Farming wise she does fine enough without runed axe.

And how about whispering helm instead of elder parasite? DL is squishy enough already, and you cant really silence their entire team, so if you do get disabled, you're gone, if your team doesnt have an aoe disable. Besides, whispering gives some damage too, and armor which helps quite a bit, along with the possibility of upgrading it to satanic

No riftshards? Lol, it's the core item for TDL.
