View Full Version : Enhanced Buff Icons (v1.25, Jul/31/10)

grohn
03-21-2010, 09:23 PM
This mod has been natively implemented into HoN. You will no longer need to download/install it.

Completely reworked buff/debuff icons. Inspired by Vadi's buff icons, BardUI, and Guild Wars.
Movable and resizable with Movable Frames.
Requires Movable Frames (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=76942). Make sure you have version 1.22 or later.

Suggestions welcome!

Features
Youtube preview - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4HymOCN8sw

New buff "popping"
New buffs will pop out at you, making it more noticeable when you become affected by a new buff/debuff

Expiration blinking
When a buff/debuff is about to expire, it will begin to blink. The closer it is to expiring, the faster it will blink.

Higher contrast
Compare the following pics:
http://wolf1oo.doesntexist.com/AsianPingPong/ebuff/imgs/contrast_standard.png - standard
http://wolf1oo.doesntexist.com/AsianPingPong/ebuff/imgs/contrast_enhanced.png - Enhanced!
The perimeter duration indicator is much easier to see.

Duration bar
A horizontal bar to represent the remaining duration of the buff. Over time, the bar empties from right to left.
http://wolf1oo.doesntexist.com/AsianPingPong/ebuff/imgs/duration_bar.png

Timers
A text label that displays the remaining duration of the buff.
It can be displayed inside the icon:
http://wolf1oo.doesntexist.com/AsianPingPong/ebuff/imgs/timer_inside.png
Or overhead:
http://wolf1oo.doesntexist.com/AsianPingPong/ebuff/imgs/timer_overhead.png

Configuration
Note - customization requires Mod Options Framework (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=66975)

Options:
-Use duration bar: Use the horizontal duration bar inside of the standard perimeter duration indicator.
-Show timer: Shows a text label with the remaining duration of the buff.
-Use overhead timer: If enabled, the timer will be displayed above the icon rather than inside of it.
-Display popping: If enabled, new buffs will pop out at you when they are applied.
-Do not pop passive buffs: If enabled, passive buffs (ie buffs with no duration) will not pop. This does not affect active buffs in any way.
-Display blinking: Causes buffs to blink when they are near expiration.
-Decimal timer: If enabled, when a buff has a remaining duration of less than 10 seconds, the label will show the duration to 1/10 of a second (ie. "3.2s" rather than "3s")

Fan-friggin-tastic! This is the best buff mod I've seen. Sadly this will make my trusty BardUI obsolete since I only used it for the buffs/debuffs. :-P

Indeed the icons behave in a very Guild War-ish fashion and since I played the game for years they feel very natural to me. The popping and blinking really draws your attention so you won't miss re-applying buffs like Plated Greaves and such. Excellent!

P.S. You have no homepage link in the MOD - is it auto-updateable too?

Does it work with MiniUI? In other words, does it make MiniUI use these instead of it's standard ones?

You can just hide the MiniUI buffs via the Movable Frames menu.

I get this error trying to apply the mod with the HoN Mod Manager since the latest patch. Movable Frames and Mod Options Framework are both applied and I've no idea why it does this, but you probably do.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, hope you'll fix it!

"Enhanced Buff Icons" caused a problem:

File "ui/mod_options_elements.package" referenced at line 65 of "F:\games\Heroes of Newerth\game\mods\ebuff.honmod\mod.xml" not found.

I tried the "Download Mod Updates" option in HoN Mod Manager, and it updated SpellChannelingBar, which now has the same problem. It could be my PC not acting up properly, but it would be cool if you could help a bit.

Sorry for double posting, seems the Edit button won't work for me.

My response is the same as it was for Channeling Bar.

Right now it is simple, functional, and unambiguous, and I have no plans to change that.
I am not going to start changing what skills are buffs and which aren't. This is strictly a UI mod, and I don't want to make it any more complicated than it needs to be.

My only suggestion, from watching the video, is to keep the duration of the hidden part of the blinking constant, so that it's not just flashing ON OFF ON OFF. Rather, on-flicker-on-flicker-on-flicker-flicker-flicker-flicker-done.

Looks fantastic, though. Going to install it immediately.

Alright.

Edit - I just tried it, it doesn't really look good, so I think I am going to stick with the current blinking.

The buffs of the unit you currently have selected.

Ie. you click an enemy, they become selected, you see their buffs.

This is one of the best buff indicators I've seen! :)

A slight issue (not sure if it's fixable or not), for buffs that get applied very often like Night Hound's ultimate (every 0.1s to be precise, or every 2 frames in HoN), the bar flickers a lot past the maximum value of the timer bar (observe the area in the red circle). Also yes, this was the game where phe`V dominated chu` as Night Hound xD

MaxGhost

Replays and Spectator games have the same UI. Asia mentionned that he might bring movable frames to the spectator interface, but it's pretty complicated to do, since it was built for the main game interface. We'll see what happens.

That's how all charges are displayed. The darkening is intended to increase the contrast so you can read the text easily.

Yes. This mod treats all buffs equally, so an irregularity with a certain buff is likely due to S2's changes.

so its the perfect alternative to bard ui (f.e. if bard stop working on it, it doesnt work cause patch or you just dont want it), but it has no chanse in battle vs the ui

Ok, here's the thing: because some mods were slightly different from what I wanted, I started modding these mods a bit so I can have them the way I want. My whole knowledge of XML however consists of the tutorial by AsiaPingPong in the mod section, so when I tried to modify this mod so that the icons are always transparent and maybe even exclude some buffs like the shop "buff" (is that even possible?) my puny little "try and error" skills failed me.

I'd appreciate it if one of you could do that for me, or, even better, if one of you could tell me where and what I need to change so that next time I might be able to do it on my own and dont have to rely on your help anymore.

I used Bard UI all the time but got way too much errors so i rebuild it with other mods i could find.
The only thing miss are the green and red buff bars on the middle right corner of the UI.
Maybe you can add bar support instead of buff icons. Would make it much easier to see if you're under an enemy spell (red) or an ally buff (green).

Interesting idea. This would actually require 3 frames, one for the buffs, one for the debuffs, and one for the neutral (such as shop).

Herm, well I don't think anyone is going to complain about enhanced functionality, no matter how it has to be done. I think it'd be best to have it as an option so that you could have traditional setup and split-up buffs.

Go into the options and toggle it twice. Check if it works. If not, reboot HoN.

I just tested myself, and it certainly does work. Just mess around a bit and you should be able to get it working.

Granted. New version 1.25
I made it show the decimal when the time is less than 10 seconds, rather than less than 3 seconds. I felt it was more intuitive this way.
