1) Don't know which hero to pick?
Make it a :pest:.
You can play it any way you want (initiator, carry, support) and still succeed. Of course you need to go with whatever is best for your team, but with :pest:, you can never go wrong!
2) Don't know what DPS luxury item to make?
Make it a http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Savage-Mace.png ;).
Nice extra 75 damage, some increase attack speed and the physical damage bonus stacks with itself, so you can get as many as you want! Sweet deal.
3) Thinking of a hero lineup?
If you chose: :madm::chro::nigh::fors::zeph:, you got it wrong!
A team needs to be balanced, every hero needs to have synergy with said team and it is always good if you can counter the enemy team at the same time, so:
:temp: Mass Disabler
:zeph: Mass aoe DPS
:dead: Ganker
:pyro: All around nuker
:andr: Support for the team
Is a way more balanced team, don't you think? And also this isn't such a good team to begin with. There are better teams... For more information about hero roles and creating a team refer to Nigma's video guide! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc_WmqLqXiM)
Note: It's good to have at least one ranged in each lane, only exceptions are the solo lanes (Since those heroes are solo, it means they should manage with or without being ranged). Heroes such as :dead: or :bloo: dominate the solo lanes. Having at least one ranged each lane means the enemy team can't go harassing you as they please and you can establish lane dominance.
4) What lifesteal item do I get?
This is something not many people think of, until they need to, and new players usually end up making the wrong choice.
http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Elder-Parasite.png Is a neat item if you won't get hit, and mostly you WILL get hit. With the 100 IAS you will land more hits, however you will only steal around 20-40 damage each hit during early and early late, so, it's only good if you can disable the enemy some way. Think of chronos. Chronos is reaaaaaal slow while attacking and has this neat third skill to go with + his ult, so you can get the enemy team inside the bubble, rape one of em and then, well... it's your call. Chances are that without proper team support you will die where you stand if you don't run.
http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Whispering-Helm.png Is the standard lifesteal item. Good lifesteal, armor and extra damage, plus the ability to control creeps comes in handy when you wanna stack ancient creeps or wanna receive a buff from a certain creep. That ability is always disregarded in low level games, but it's really useful if you can get a mino in the mid of a fight and stun the enemy team.
http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Abyssal-Skull.png Is a good, cheap item for certain melee heroes. Namely, those who require a little bit more mana regen and have some minions they want to look after. Maybe War Beast will do good with this.
http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Symbol-of-Rage.png This is the best lifesteal item. Passive 25% lifesteal, extra 25 strenght meaning more hp, 475 more hp if I'm correct, and the awesome ability to get a 150% lifesteal for a couple of seconds. On a carry this does wonders with survivability if you can use it at the right time, downside is, it's too expensive, so it's not always worth getting. Strength can definitely do better with a heart and int too!
5) I wanna take a kill so I will ult that ****er when he's <250.
(Stands up and slaps that *****) NO! BAD! BAD!...
Listen closely... standing around waiting to take the kill, or saving your ult so long as to kill him and still waste 250 damage+ is absolute bs. Chances are you are not even the carry, so you are taking a kill he needs in order to get the items to CARRY the team to victory. If you are playing heroes such as witch slayer or pyro and try to do this, you just wasted your ult. If you wanna ult someone and get the kill, then go ahead, but time it so your team doesn't waste time nor skills and mana trying to kill the guy, when you are just going to ult him anyway. Either ult him soon enough or don't ult at all. Don't wait till he's about to die to ult, that's just a waste of an ult who could have killed someone else.
IF you are the carry, then try to last hit him or use regular skills to do so, if you can't, then ult away and try to time it so your ult deals full damage, thus saving your team mana and time. Time is vital in HoN.
6) What to do if they are pushing a lane?
a) Keep farming.
b) Push the lane you are in.
c) Go to that lane with your team.
a) This should only be done if you are the carry and your team's got it covered. If they need your help you gotta decide: Can you win this fight or you can't? If you can, go and own them; if you can't, keep farming. A farmed carry is deadly, that's why he is the carry.
b) This is usually the best course of action when they are not pushing into the base and the tower is lost (most likely cause no one in your team moved). This way, they get gold, but so you do and it balances things out.
c) This is the recommended course of action. A surprise gank on a tower with less than 3 guys or fending base in an all out push can decide matches or at least give you some nice gold if done correctly.
7) Bottom line?
This is a team and it should be played as one. Every decision you make should be made around: What's good for the team? If it's good for the team, it's good for you. Try to coordinate with your teammates and if this fails, try your best not to die and not to let them die, but chances are that if you cannot play as a team, you already lost.
Author's note: I started this out just to waste time, but towards the end I decided to give some personal opinion I have on things...
Don't get me wrong, :pest: and the mace totally rock, it's what I do when I can't decide what to do.
