Hey, I've never played dota, but I've played LoL for a couple months and have been enjoying it. I'm curious about HoN though. Without going too over the top, can you explain to me the reasons why you prefer HoN, and major differences? I've played a couple practice games by myself and my first impression is that it's a much more complete game, with many more options, it's also much more complex and competitive. The completeness is awesome, I'm just put back by the complexity.

If I wanted to learn this game, how might I go about doing that? Is there a good tutorial or new player help game mode? What are the most important things to know? One thing that confused me was the shop, there are many more shops and I think I found that there are even shops not at your base, which to me was crazy. I can imagine there is competition in preventing the enemy to get to the shops in the jungle.

Basically, knowing that I have no dota or hon experience but lots of lol experience, what's the best way to learn this game and better evaluate it?

My best advice is to practice in what are called "no stats" games. No stats are tracked and you a free to experiement and learn as you will. You can also join a noob friendly clan to help you show the ropes.

I teach new players also. Basically just spend some time learning the heroes and over time ull develop a strong playstyle :)

Good luck

Here is a list of articles you can find in the Training Grounds:

Here are some video tutorials for getting started, these might be of use to you:

We are currently creating a better tutorial system, HoN has a big learning curve, it will take you a couple of months to pick it up completely. Just hang in there and enjoy it.

If you want a noob friendly clan, click my signature :).

There's always members on who are happy to take you through the game in a inhouse (clan battle, but could also be a 1v1 training session) or a pub. (Public game)

If you guys with support s2 games on your avatar are a part of s2, I'm very impressed. Riot posts in their forums, but not with such a high level of help and support. I'll check out the video tutorials and try figure this stuff out a little more, thanks for the response.

Hi :) Those of us with a golden shield are not dev staff, we are players who have chosen to pre-purchase the game. The S2 staff members have their name in red font and have the S2Games icon next to their name. Idejder is very active on the forums, but they leave the Training Grounds to us as frankly the law of large numbers dictates that they will not have all the best players on staff ;)

Rarinn, Tripwyr and I have been appointed to help in the Training Grounds and are titled accordingly but we do not represent S2 Games.

Though we aren't S2 staff, they are very active elsewhere in the forums, but all the Training Grounds business is left to the Elders, so you won't see them here.

I've been playing some more and have a couple questions. It seems like carries are popuar and I'm completely happy playing support characters that can babysit the carry or offer some other team utility. Are there certain heroes you'd recommend? Right now I'm really enjoying nymphora. Heal, stun, teleport, mana, all kinds of goodies. One thing I've been finding is that heroes in hon are much more powerful than in lol.I haven't encountered any servers that restrict you to your own faction, but if there are some I should probably learn some hellbourne characters as well. Haven't play him, but soul reaper sounds interesting, mostly because he's a hellbourne that can heal, and I love being able to save teammates and heal.

So basically, what heroes do you recommend for beginners, specifically those that offer team support/utility/healing? Oh also, I've been finding that I'm restricted in my item choice because it's so risky to go to the secret shop. Are there good items that you can build at the base? Another nice feature would be able to click on an item in your inventory and see what it builds into. Is that possible?

A comprehensive list of support heroes is a pretty blurred line. You can build heroes in different ways.

But the main support heroes/babysitters include
:deme::accu::vood::jera::nymp::glac::plag::soulr:

those are usually the most sought after support/babysitters

Just a quick question...you're not playing easy mode are you? I only ask because you say that carries seem really popular. Althought they are still popular in normal mode (NM), most people realize you shouldn't build a team full of carries. This is not so in easy mode (EM), where carries absolutely dominate.

As you will learn, EM is not easier, and far less noob friendly than NM. Good support can be game changing in NM, but not so much in EM.

spend 3 hours reading guides/watching Nigma's videos, then play normal mode games.

no, right now I'm sticking to normal mode and no stats, also no random mode. I've only played a couple games so I don't have a lot to base it on, last game I know we had a scout and a swiftblade, and another guy that could split into 3 guys it looked like, he got the most kills on our team and basically did the carrying.

Im going to assume that it was sand wraith.

Either that or he bought a Geometers Bane.

Well I have to say, I'm very impressed by the game. At first I was intimidated by the complexity, but now I see it as a much more mature and grown up version of LoL, which sems kiddie by comparison. LoL can still be competitive I'm sue, but this game is much more deep and not riddled with bugs and empty promises. The graphics and sound is really awesome too, and much more stable. I'm not familiar with all of the heroes yet, but so far the ones I have played seem quite complete and viable, it's awesome to imagine so many diverse heroes are balanced so well. I still have things to get used to, but I'm sold.

This game is FAR from balanced but yes it is in development still.
Dont worry. Give it time. Your playing will skyrocket immediately once you learn every hero and his/her/its/things abilities.

Good luck!

Add me if you ever want to learn stuff
