So my girlfriend's mom is paying me to update her computer's OS. She's running some old version of Windows XP Home Edition. This would be a simple task, but the problem is they have no internet. Anyone know of a place to download the full update on my computer and simply put it on a flash drive and install it on her computer? BTW, wiping out the drive and just reinstalling a newer OS is not an option because she has a lot of data on the computer that I can't just wipe out.

DVDs are cool.

Portable hard Drives are cooler.

Also; don't accept the money. Their family will love you, and it's not like you aren't going to spend it on her anyways.

You can't switch from an older windows OS to a newer one without reformatting the HD IIRC. The best thing you can do is back up all the old files and install the new OS, then put the files back on.

this might help,
you can buy and download a legitimate copy of Windows 7 from here; http://windows7.digitalriver.com/
(http://windows7.digitalriver.com/)
If you have a student email adress, you can get it really cheap.

Don't accept the money. Telling your right now, do NOT accept it. Even if she offers it to you it's a ****ing trap. Don't do it if you want to keep relations good. WOMEN ARE ****ING TRICKSTERS.

Despite the well-informed and brilliant advice that Narfle (Rush Limbaugh level of brilliance) has provided you , I wouldn't take the money, because then you get bonus points with her family. (They might expect you not to take the money.)

But if you plan on dumping her, take the money and run.

Why the hell do you people suggest Linux / Unix for average users?

The damn operating system was made for programmers / incredibly tech savy people. Have you ever worked tech support? You can sometimes barely get people to click on "my computer" damned if you will be able to get them to root to update their settings.

I installed it in college for my C++ courses and I hate the damn thing! it's so unfriendly. I'm not sure why people think the average person would be willing to adapt after being a windows user for so long. I can see why one might recommend macs as it takes away some of the power from the users but ffs Linux drove me mad and I could make my own drivers.

Funny enough try googling for how to uninstall Linux. All you will find is forums upon forums of people asking "Why would you want to uninstall? have you tried _____ yet? Try another flavour!". I eventually just wiped the damn drive but my bios was still messed by the damn grub loader.

So to the OP unless you want to be making a tonne of house calls to help them set up every damn piece of hardware the have and to explain to them for the umpteenth time why they can't install certain programs and will have to make due with some open source equivalent don't install linux.

Now if they want a server go ahead...

Lol, quite a few responses. Well to let all of you know I found a fix on my own. I just used some program (forgot the name) that downloads all the updates for xp on the computer that has Internet and puts an install on my flash drive. I just stuck it in her computer and ran the installation and it updated her old ass windows xp to sp3. And for those who focused on the money aspect I ended up not accepting the money.
