Introduction

Deadwood is easily one of my favorite str heroes. He can be a very versatile ganker, supporter and quite a good semi-carry with the right items. As you see below Deadwood have one of the best str gains in the game, which give you the opportunity to focus more on your core items and not on survivability hp items that most heroes need.

Deadwood

http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Deadwood.png (http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Deadwood.png)

Born of the cruelly tainted lands of Newerth, Deadwood is the undead husk of the first Keeper of the Forest. All around him, living things wilt, and he has little hesitation to destroy trees or use them as weapons. Despite seeking the destruction of Newerth, he still commands the incredible strength and natural powers of a forest guardian, thus combining the cruelty of the Hellbourne with the powers that once belonged only to the Beast Horde.

Spells

Rotten Grasp
http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Rotten-Grasp.png (http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Rotten-Grasp.png)
Calling upon the deep corruption underground,
Deadwood can root anyone standing in the targeted area after a short delay.

Level 1 : After a 1.5 second delay applies Rotten Grasp to all enemies in 200 radius. Lasts 1 second.
Level 2 : After a 1.5 second delay applies Rotten Grasp to all enemies in 200 radius. Lasts 1.7 seconds.
Level 3 : After a 1.5 second delay applies Rotten Grasp to all enemies in 200 radius. Lasts 2.3 seconds.
Level 4 : After a 1.5 second delay applies Rotten Grasp to all enemies in 200 radius. Lasts 3 seconds.
Mana cost 120
Cooldown 13 seconds
Rotten Grasp Effects
Immobilized
100 Magic damage per second
-1/2/3/4 Armor

This spell is your bread and butter. Use to initiate, gank, escape and chase. Also the best part is that it reduce armor which makes your ulti even more lethal.

Uproot
http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Uproot.png (http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Uproot.png)
Deadwood can turn any tree into a weapon by simply tearing it out of the ground.
While holding a tree, he can throw it at an enemy, mini-stunning and snaring them.

Level 1 : Picks up target tree, getting +15 damage for 5 attacks. Deadwood can then throw the tree at a target dealing 30 Physical damage, mini-stunning and applying Son of a Birch for 3 seconds.
Level 2 : Picks up target tree, getting +30 damage for 6 attacks. Deadwood can then throw the tree at a target dealing 60 Physical damage, mini-stunning and applying Son of a Birch for 3 seconds.
Level 3 : Picks up target tree, getting +45 damage for 7 attacks. Deadwood can then throw the tree at a target dealing 90 Physical damage, mini-stunning and applying Son of a Birch for 3 seconds.
Level 4 : Picks up target tree, getting +60 damage for 8 attacks. Deadwood can then throw the tree at a target dealing 120 Physical damage, mini-stunning and applying Son of a Birch for 3 seconds.
Mana cost 60
Cooldown 15 seconds
Son of a Birch Effect
60% movement speed slow, decreasing over 3 seconds.

Also a great spell, use it in start at fountain to leave base with the extra free damage. This spell is mostly used in chasing, ganking and finishing off wounded enemies. If you have problem hitting rotten grasp, use this right before to slow them down.

Clearcutting
http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Clearcutting.png (http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Clearcutting.png)
Deadwood, not known for his love of nature, can gain the ability to destroy
trees he walks through. Empowered by the destruction he has caused,
Deadwood gains movement speed, attack speed, and slow resistance when destroying trees.

Level 1 : Applies Clearcutting to self for 9 seconds. Any tree ran through grants one charge. Max 1 charge.
Level 2 : Applies Clearcutting to self for 10 seconds. Any tree ran through grants one charge. Max 2 charge.
Level 3 : Applies Clearcutting to self for 11 seconds. Any tree ran through grants one charge. Max 3 charge.
Level 4 : Applies Clearcutting to self for 12 seconds. Any tree ran through grants one charge. Max 4 charge.
Mana cost 50
Cooldown 25 seconds
Clear Cutting Effects
+3% Movement Speed per charge
+15 Attack Speed per charge
Treewalking
+25% Slow Resistance per charge

Great spell when it comes to ganking unexpected targets and fleeing/juking. Use when ganking like this: Uproot, cast rotten grasp, use clearcutting, hit target, use ulti, chase them off. If you find yourself being ganked use this to flee of quick into a safe position and tp to safety away.

Willowmaker
http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Willowmaker.png (http://heroes-newerth.com/wp-content/myimages/Willowmaker.png)
An ageless and powerful force, Deadwood uses his stump arm to punch an enemy,
dealing massive damage. The hit is so powerful a wave of force echoes behind the
target, weakening those it hits.

Level 1 : Deals 400 Physical damage and stuns target for 1 second. Any enemies in a 90 degree cone 600 units behind Deadwood, have Willowmaker applied to them for 5 seconds and are slowed for 2 seconds.
Level 2 : Deals 600 Physical damage and stuns target for 1 second. Any enemies in a 90 degree cone 600 units behind Deadwood, have Willowmaker applied to them for 5 seconds and are slowed for 2 seconds.
Level 3 : Deals 800 Physical damage and stuns target for 1 second. Any enemies in a 90 degree cone 600 units behind Deadwood, have Willowmaker applied to them for 5 seconds and are slowed for 2 seconds.
Mana Cost 100/150/200
Cooldown 105/85/65 seconds
Willowmaker Effect
Lowers total strength by 20/30/40%

This spell is awsome, It's like a pyromancers ulti but meele range and also physical so you dont have to be afraid it will have reduced effect on people wearing Shamans headress. However, try not to use it on heroes with high armor (mostly agility carries lategame) and using together with armor reducing items (if your carry) it can be highly lethal.

Explanation

We pick 1 rank of uproot at level 1 and pick a free tree at fountain. Wait for level 3 before trying on a kill or atleast lowering their hp, its much easier with rotten grasp rank 2, also make sure your ally is ready when you do it.

Clearcutting is taken 1 rank at level 4 for ganking reasons, It's always nice with some increased attack speed and a escape mechanism early game. If you get ganked then use clearcutting and quick run through the woods and use tp.

Most deadwoods I've seen take clearcutting instead of stats. I think that is very unnecessary because as I play deadwood you dont need attack sped. If you play deadwood like a supporter or nuker then its better with stats because ur spamming your spells and consuming your mana a lot faster. But if you want deadwood like a carry then I would recommand you to take clearcutting.

Roaming

Roaming is what you are going to do early game. It involves ganking as much as possible when your moving between the lanes, attacking enemies from behind and killing them together with your allies. This gives your allies the chance to farm safety in their lane, this is obviously very good for your teams carry. Heroes with stun, disable or slow which is good early game is usually the best roamers, for example; Andromeda, deadwood, magmus, behemoth and hammerstorm all have useful stuns and snares.

This is how a successful gank look

On this picture I cast rotten grasp
And here you see my rotten grasp being casted and Im getting ready to charge him.

Here you see andromeda stunning Dicepline while im charging in to kill this corrupted bastard.

Then continuing to hit him before his taking on the run.

Tossed my oakbolt and continued to chase him, which resulted in a kill.

Good allies
http://i38.tinypic.com/14342af.jpg

Initiating heroes, or heroes with a aiming aoe stun or nuke like magmus and pebbles for example is your best allies. Also any heroes that need to aim with their spells from far away like valk and devourer will love you for your grasp.

Bad enemies

Not many heroes can stop the mighty deadwood but some can be bloody annoying  For example; Magebane!! All your spells cost mana and without mana your whorthless

Jeriziahs ulti can make your ulti whorthless and his shield can stop grasp.

Also to much disable can stop you from using your ulti.

WARNING: BE VERY CAREFUL WITH YOUR ULTI AGAINST PEOPLE WITH BARBED ARMOR. People with good macroing with activate barbed armor just before your ulti is about to hit them and that will backfire and deal the same damage to you.

Items

Early game

Bottle
Enhanced marshers
Power Supply
Wards (Optional)
Loggers Hatchet (optional)
Bracer (Optional)

Deadwood is a ganker hero and should therefor be played like one. When I play Deadwood I roam and thats why I start out with a bottle. You may want to pick up a loggers hatchet from the outpost to help you lasthit. Also if you find yourself dying or getting focused a lot, then get a bracer.

When your at base for your first it's time buy marshers, buy the punchdaggers if you can afford. If not then buy them from the outpost as fast as possible because that will make your roaming a lot easier.

I almost always get powersupply to all heroes,as it's almost as cheap as a bracer and it gives you much more survability for the small price.

After you got these items, start saving up for a portal key but you can always skip it if you want too, nonetheless its a core in my build.

If no one else is warding you should do it, you dont want your carry to be the one to ward because they need to save money for items.

Mid game

During this part of the game, try gank as much as possible. It's essential if you want to dominate late game. Get your portal key then continue ganking and pushing low health towers. As soon as you got portal key you be very useful for initating teamfights. Remember to kill all heroes going alone, you dont want to let their carry get freefarm. Now you got your core items and should start saving money to a warpcleft which will be used in the daemonic breastplate that you will be getting later.

Enhanced marshers
Blink
Power Supply
Bottle
Tp scroll
Warpcleft (hopefully)

Lategame

If you played well you probally have your demonic breastplate now (or most if it). In this time of the game you should focus on pushing your enemies base and the remaining towers. Never go alone in this phase of the game, go with your team and gank all heroes going alone but dont walk into a bait. If game continues, get a heart or frostfield plate but it depends on the game, if your against a lot of heroes with great damage output and they keep targetting you get barbed armor. If your team needs cc then get kuldras sheepstick or stormspirit.

Blink
Power Supply
Bottle
Enhanced marshers
Daemonic Breastplate
Heart/Frostfieldplate

An, overall, good read. Demonstrates the real lack of complication in setting up a gank with Deadwood.

Whilst I agree with the majority of this I do disagree with the majority of what I've read your build tends to go for attack speed which with the nature of uproot I feel doesn't fit too well. It has limited charges and with your attack speed increases from steamboots and breastplate I find myself without a tree which in chasing situations means a tiny bit of extra time before you can get one in flight to slow the other hero. Obviously an unhelpful situation.

I find myself when playing Deadwood going for ghost marchers and shield breaker in terms of must items, capitalising more on per-hit-damage rather than attack speed. Meaning I almost always have tree in hand ready to slow / interrupt at a moments notice. It also results in a reduction in mana consumption as I consume the charges on uproot much more slowly.

Power supply is one of my favourite items however I feel it unnecessary in deadwood's case, preferring to grab a Ring of the Teacher instead. Not only is it somewhat cheaper it also doesn't require charges, allowing you to always keep tree in hand and can be upgrades to nome's in the event your team doesn't build one.

I also disagree with your justification of stats over clearcutting. Clearcutting can be used in place of a portal key to come barrelling through the trees towards a rooted enemy who can do naught be take a willowmaker to the face. Aswell as giving you the ability to juke your opponents in a completely unpredictable fashion should you require an escape and resistance to slowing effects. Whilst no replacement for a portal key it does have other uses, allowing Deadwood to build up momentum (here speed, attack speed and slow resistance) whilst entering a teamfight, that you wouldn't have with portal key.

A good read all in all though.

on the topic of uproot and attack speed you want to land your attacks as fast as possible so you can pick up a new tree for max damage. its going to be the same amount of +damage no matter how fast or slow you use it up and the benefit of using it up sooner is the cool down for the next time you can pick up a tree starts sooner.

There was a misstake in the build when I posted it directly from drafts, I meant to had written enhanced marshers and not steamboots, I agree 100% with that enhanced marshers is the better ones =) thanks for pointing out, I changed now

And about me taking stats over clearcutting. I didn't make any str items and the stats will boost my hp lategame. However, in your case you got shieldbreaker and the attackspeed will probally help you a lot more then normal stats. Also in a competive game I would never afford both daemonic breastplate and shieldbreaker, so I choose breastplate because it gives me both survival and supporting for the main carries.

I had a lot of going back and forward about taking stats or clearcutting. Im still not 100% sure about what would be best. I had clearcutting maxed after grasp and uproot in the guide first when I posted it, was probally very foolish of me to change it too stats. Nonetheless, I will look into it deeper tomorrow.

EDIT: Changed in guide to clearcutting

something else that works is you pull a tree and keep it in your hand for 15 secs so the cooldown is up. then throw the tree and root so they cant get away. then you can ult and pick up another tree right away.
the thing with leading with root is that sometimes you miss. it happens to everyone. but by throwing first and then rooting, you basically dont miss root ever. just clearcut out, throw tree, root, ult, and pick up another tree if necessary.

What i have started doing is buy portal key because my tactic with Deadwood now is pick up a tree, throw it, use uproot jump with portal key and finish them off with willowmaker which works really well and tends to kill them with the late game items i have,

I'm not the best with Deadwood so advice on items is great

I use Demonic Breastplate,
Portal Key
Behemoths Heart
Ruined Axe
Mock of Brilliance

which all together costs 22700Gold
and im tempted to buy Insanitarius which is another 2850 Gold
and thats a tough amount of gold to get in one game plus the order in which i should get the items

Yes its very good if your playing in a pub game where your opponents are far worser then in competive. However, if your playing in a competive game deadwood is usually not the carry of the team so other items are priorized.

Good guide but my build differs slightly in that I don't get a bottle so early. I start off with x1 Runes of Blight and a TP then farm for standard marchers and early Portal Key. Uproot helps out tremendously with farming. Obtaining a Portal key this early makes Deadwood an extremely feared ganker in the early game (especially against soft ints). I usually try to Grasp from a distance, key in, ult, wack with my uprooted club. I keep my club until after I ult just in case it doesn't kill him. You'll want the extra damage it provides (and maybe even a slow down if he tries to run). Every now and then I key in and toss club to slow then grasp and ult. Depends on the situation.

As far as the rest of my build goes, it's pretty much identical.

---My Build (items purchased in this order)---
x1 Runes of Blight
x1 TP
x1 Marchers (standard; not upgraded)
x1 Portal Key
x1 Bottle
x1 Runed Axe (For damage and health/mana regen)

The rest of my build really depends on what's happening in the game but up to the mid game, this build is perfect.
