View Full Version : English Lesson of the Day (Lesson 2)

Today's Word: Fail
Today's English lesson is about how often I see people misuse the word "fail." Before I get in to the details, let's just clarify one thing first:
The word "fail" is a verb.
Fail (verb): to disappoint the expectations or trust of
Yes, that's right. It's a verb, not an adjective, not a noun. Let's take a look at some ways that this word is commonly misused:
________________________________________________
(As an adjective, incorrect)
"This thread is fail." <--Wrong!
In order to make this sentence correct, we would have to use the words "a failure" instead. In this case, we are changing the word to a noun. There is no form of the word "fail" that can ever be used as an adjective.
(Correct)
"This thread is a failure." <--Right!
________________________________________________
(As a noun, incorrect)
"Epic fail." <--Wrong!
There is no such thing as a fail, let alone an epic fail. In order to fix this, we would use "fail" in its intended form (as a verb), but we would use the past-tense form, "failed." We would also want to change the word "epic" to the adverb version, "epically."
(Correct)
"You failed epically." <--Right!

Fail and win have become parts of internet and gamer terminology, similar to noob. Trying to apply rules of grammar to something totally outside their intended scope is like criticizing Star Wars for the audible space battles.
OP's post is full of fail, and in the future, gentlemen, do not feed the troll.

Also, your "that guy" who believes he has some feel for the back alleys, slums, and social realities of the Internet. It is what it is. I'm entitled to my grammatical awareness. Only thing more hysterical than people sounding moronic (which I'm fully entitled to consider as such) is people like you who try to make people like me feel guilty for having a brain lol.

As for you, sir, while apparently to you it's fun to be intentionally naive to the grammatical forms of the English language, one must remember how stupid one sounds.
Most people are likely are NOT intentionally naive to the grammatical forms of the English language. You see, there is this thing called slang. In places that are serious business, such as English class, slang is not appropriate. In places that are not serious business, such as a thread in the forums for the beta of a video game on the internet, slang is going to be commonplace no matter how much smart-ass grammar Nazi's think they are cool trying to change that.
Fail and other such internet colloquialisms will not change by him making a thread, and it will just be seen as obnoxious.
tl;dr - This thread is fail.

Today's Word : Troll (Verb / Noun)
Notice how you said "Troll thread," by placing troll before thread and making thread a follow through of troll, you turned it into an adjective. Notice how Troll is not an adjective. And yes, it's the equivalent of saying "fail thread."
Note how you used it in its slang form. Good job using something called contradiction. By using slang to point your topic into a more specific meaning, you completely ruined your topic on how words should be used for what they truly are, and not for their slang. I suggest saying "this is not a useless thread... (though we all know it is)" or "this thread is not intended to be meaningless..."
A short, but very very simple lesson today on not just grammar, but speech. In any case, everyone makes mistakes. I wouldn't be surprised if i made a mistake in this post, just be lucky i tidied most of it up instead of using slang. So learn! learn for lesson #3!

I appreciate you trying to sound smart in pointing out my "mistake," but when referring to an internet thread, the subject can be used as the adjective, and "thread" is the noun. Some examples:
Football thread (A thread about football)
HoN thread (A thread about HoN)
No, this is not the equivalent of:
Fail thread (A thread about fail)???
You could, however, have a "Failing thread," or a thread about failing.
You can learn from me. That's what I am here for.

Epic fail. If you're going to try and be a smartass you should know your stuff better. The English language is described as evolving, meaning changing, meaning that the origonal use of a word could be altered and/or added to. You sir, are fail. This thread is fail. HoN is win.
Every language is technically evolving; however the rate at which a language changes is directly proportional to; the amount of languages meeting together in a singular location (i.e. a town or city with a diverse set of ethnic minorities); the amount of generations that pass (the evolution of language is usually quite slow); and finally if the speakers of a particular nation are invaded and/or enslaved (e.g. the Norman invasion of England in 1066, the Roman invasion of most of Europe circa 100 BC to 350 AD, etc).
Thus, you can't simply add words to a language. You can create a word yourself, but that new word merely becomes a part of your ideolect (your own form of speech, derived from your dialect and the environment in which you grew up). It doesn't automatically become a part of a language just because you and a group of Internet people decided to butcher the grammar of that same language.
Oh, and it's *original.

Actually it isn't because you don't understand the usage of the word troll that the thread is referring too. Its the usage of troll that's commonly used in fishing I.E. to troll for bites, which is where the word for troll comes from. It does not come from the Tolkeinesque mythical creature. It may be a slight deviation from accepted definition, but it isn't changing a verb to a noun or adjective like he's describing.
Good try though! You should really realize when you are dealing with people of obviously superior intellect though, try to keep your false ivory tower criticisms to those who will fall for them.

There are people living completely without fail, and you have so much fail. Youre a horrible person for not sharing, you know that?
And if you dont want to share your fail with other people because its too much work, then stfu, theres NGOs that will distribute the fail for you, to the lesser fortunate.
Just make sure to check their business model and pay attention to how much fail they use for administration and how much fail they actually distribute.

How is brians life?
Tell us all about the life of brian.
Big white crests rising and falling, glistening in the summer African sun. Surging and receding, surging and receding. The occasional thunderous crash, churning up the sandy shore and driving the stumbling, screaming swimmers down to the ground. Limbs flailing, gasping for air, clutching their eyes to clear the stinging salt water. A few adjustments to their bathing suits returns their fleetingly dignified composure and then back they go. These are Brian's memories of summertime at the beach. For a child, the beach is more than a place to go, it's a giant world of dreams, fantasy and awe. Sandcastles become giant forts and mighty kingdoms at war with the gods of the crashing waves. Rocks and shells transform into treasures of immeasurable value. Each one in his collection instantly adds to his wealth and influence among his contemporaries. Let's not forget the crabs and fish and the occasional washed up jellyfish, that gets poked and flipped and tortured in other unimaginable ways. A day at the ocean, is a day in wonderland. Brian's family went away every summer for a couple of weeks down to the coast. As kids, he thought it was a perfectly normal thing that all families did. It always came as a huge surprise if ever he came across anyone who had never been to the ocean. I mean, where have you been! Seriously. It's something Brian appreciates very much now, as the last time his wife and himself spent even 9 days at the ocean was five years ago. Even now though, the magical draw of the ocean is still as strong as it was back then. It's as if the moment you feel the sand beneath your feet and take a deep breath of the ocean air, you've escaped. Escaped into a parallel universe where life takes on a different form and meaning. The stretch of ocean that we frequented was quite a treacherous one. Rip tides, under currents and deep gullies were the order of the day. Brian strains to remember a summer where he didn't witness an ocean rescue, a few of those not successful. The sickening feeling you get as you hear the helicopter blades chopping through the air. The sand covered, sun burnt group gathered around on the beach.

Oh, not a thread about songs or lure huh? that makes sense.
/sigh, gaston thanks for pointing out the least relevant thing on my post and trying to make a rebuttal, but please stick to the main point when you're trying to argue against me, i don't like useless arguments.
If you're trying to teach internet people real english without the use of any slang, and use slang, hows that look on your part?
example : you tell your mom that drinking is bad, and that she shouldnt do it cuz blahblahblah.. WHILE drinking yourself. I think the word is discreditability.
and i didn't really sound smart at all, just logical.
I hope this made sense for you next time you try and argue against others.
And yes, equivalent to fail thread. Dyou want to know why? It's called categorizing comparatives correctly. (actually i don't know what its called but this sounds fine, you can't compare an orange to an apple when all we talk about are apples.)
Because you used "troll" in its slang it's only common sense to use "fail" in its slang, but i mean if you were actually talking about "troll" for what it actually is, then i'm wrong.
