View Full Version : The Art of War in HoN
Disclaimer
Maybe we could disguse this topic a little further (every opinion and every idea or help is welcome). My understandings of this game are just starting to make sense (= noob), but their are some comen things that all most apply for every game with strategy elements (and sometimes for your life too) and which i do like to show you:
Chapter 1
"Sun Tzu said: The art of war is of vital importance
to the State."
- That means to your team! Act in unity and you will be able to crush any foe. Run around alone and you will most certainly die (if you are not a ganker).
->
"2. It is a matter of life and death, a road either
to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry
which can on no account be neglected."
"17. According as circumstances are favorable,
one should modify one's plans."
-> If your plane is to crush the tower in the middle and it's well guarded try another side.
"18. All warfare is based on deception."
-> Ask yourself the following questions: What are your enemys skills? What is his role? Where will he most likely be if he is missing?
---> Wards
----->
"19. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable;
when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we
are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away;
when far away, we must make him believe we are near."
-> For example: Setting traps with one lonely character in the sidelane is a nice idea. The enemies will most likely not all arrive at once.
----->
20. Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder,
and crush him.
21. If he is secure at all points, be prepared for him.
If he is in superior strength, evade him.
22. If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to
irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant.
-> Kill the same character over and over again and he will most likely not participate in team-battles anymore.
23. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest.
If his forces are united, separate them.
-> Don't let him farm and try to avoid uneven team battles.
24. Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where
you are not expected.
;)
Edit: Chapter 2 and some pictures are coming soon.

@Aldy
Honestly, taking snippets from a book about military strategy and doing a poor job of relating the book to a computer game does not make you look cool and it is not impressive. HoN is hardly similar to actual combat, much less army managerial strategies and tactics. Everything you said is either wrong or they are intrinsic properties of this sort of competitive gameplay and are obvious.
If your plane is to crush the tower...
Uhhuh...

You could relate The Art of War to anything. Eating an apple, driving a car, etc. And it will make you look stupid. Those guys who relate it to law and business are already stretching it slightly. What does that make you?

Close this thread before you embarrass yourself any more OP.

You read the disclaimer, right? It was merely an idea. Some ppl might not know this book (strategy) at all.
But with your self-righteous idea that everbody on the internetz tries to look cool and pointing that one out might actually project you tried to look cool once.

This is actually interesting, as tactics & strategies are involved in HON.
Flamers, gtfo please.

OP is far too stupid to fully understand the Art of War.

Dont get discouraged OP (original poster, idk how newb you are). This game is exactly like war, and the connections you made are correct. Don't worry about the flames (after checking their stats you'll find they dont' know s**t, just trolling)

Okay benefit of the doubt for OP to relate Sun Tzu. But please, if this is in the guide's section please fix formatting, grammar, and spelling. =]

No. Half the stuff he wrote is basically a random line from the book and then a completely inane connection to DOTA.
For example, the first tenet has nothing at all to do with acting as a team. In HON terms, it's telling you that in order to ensure a win, you have to have a completely understanding of all the stratagems and theory for every facet of the game. Preparation (choosing heroes, lanes, items), efficiency (letting the proper heroes get farm, not wasting time on unlikely ganks), engagement (when to initiate, when to back off), etc.
I don't see how anyone can possibly connect warfare being based on deception to having knowledge of your enemies.
Feigning disorder and pretending to be weak mean you should play as if you're not quite sure how to play. Let yourself get harassed a bit, perhaps use abilities at very bad times on the wrong targets, take a mana pot and run up to the creep wave to let yourself get hit, etc. The opponent will generally think you are a retard and act overly aggressive. People always go for an easy kill and with a proper lanemate/ganker you can turn their baited tower dive gank attempt into a double/triple kill. This actually works extremely well in DOTA pubs and can net you easy kills 99% of the time, but unfortunately there are stats in HON so if you're not briandead, people generally know beforehand.
Irritating those with choleric tempers can best be equated to trolling. Just **** talk. The video game community is mostly made up of people with double digit IQ, so spamming their screen about how much they suck can very possibly make them lose focus and play like morons attempting to prove you wrong. Protip - if you have a ward in the forest and see enemy blue jungling at low HP, get just out of range of his sight... "LOL BLUE THAT WAS A PRETTY SAD GANK ATTEMPT A MIN AGO. NICE STUN BTW, L2P IDIOT, TP > YOU ? ? ?" Engage while he stands there autoattacking creeps for the first 5~ seconds, +200g. "WTF I WAS TYPING OGM FLAJKLFDS" etc.
Again, I'm not really sure how any of that can be connected to "KILL THE SAME GUY OVER AGAIN LOL."
If you're gonna try to make such a dumb topic, at least make it somewhat sensible.
"If you do battle in swamps and wetlands, you must position close to grass, with the trees to your back." - Sun Tzu
I find this one perticually relevant. But seriously some of this is relevant to HoN.

The theme is interesting, the author may not be the best writer out there, but there can be some interesting debates around The Art Of War.

Why the big fuss? Much like HoN, this was written out of interest. Despite the opinion of some people, I think its fun to make applications from one thing to another. Its sometimes INTERESTING to see how we can apply things.
for those of the religious type, Christ did the same thing while teaching parables. He taught ideas while relating to topics the people could relate to. I.E Parable of the Sower etc. Im sure you could apply ideas of farming to HoN or studying as well, but, it makes for an interesting read nonetheless.
So OP, I think you have hit something interesting here...

Well you see Hitler decided to march through the forests to attack other countries, so in HoN you must take to the woods and fight others there.

the art of war goes beyond all and can be applied to everything in life....but as for HoN... cant even get me started, the art of war is a key tool if you kno how to use it

For HoN, I strongly prefer the application of Miyamoto Musashi's Book of Five Rings:
When you are even with an opponent, it is essential to keep thinking of stabbing him in the face with the tip of your sword in the intervals between the opponent's sword blows and your own sword blows. When you have the intention of stabbing your opponent in the face, he will try to get both his face and body out of the way. In the midst of battle, as soon as an opponent tries to get out of the way, you have already won. Therefore it is imperative not to forget the technique of "stabbing the face". This should be cultivated in the course of practicing martial arts.

The saddest part is, this guy just jacked the whole idea from an ANCIENT ( plus original at the time) DotA thread. Mind you fat404, the creator if the original one for dota did a rather respectable job of it, this though...
