I have to profess I have not yet seen this. I don't typically go to the theatre to catch big blockbusters like this--last big movie I actually paid to go see (and am not ashamed to tell you guys about) was The Dark Knight.

My big question is, is this movie good because of the 3D, or does it stand on its own? If I wait 'til it comes out on DVD, am I going to be missing a once-in-a-lifetime experience?

Went last week for the 3D presentation and it was sold out an hour early.

Going to try again this weekend.

I haven't seen it yet, but from my friend's who've seen it, I hear one thing. "Great animations, **** story".

Weak plot but, best CG I've ever seen.

Better writing would've made it one of the best of the year.

Avatar is NOT a dvd movie, go watch it in Imax 3D, if you won't like the plot you will atleast the stunning visual effects.

I wouldn't say the CG was that great...

I mean Advent Children came out in 2002 IIRC and had just as good graphics.

I heard it caused some kind of global depression/suicidal tendencies because it was so good.

I've seen it, it was alright. I liked LOTR 3 better.

This, it's called Avatar depression and I had it for 2 weeks before I shrugged it off. Here's a CNN excerpt:

James Cameron's completely immersive spectacle "Avatar" may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.

A user named Mike wrote on the fan Web site "Naviblue" that he contemplated suicide after seeing the movie.

"Ever since I went to see 'Avatar' I have been depressed. Watching the wonderful world of Pandora and all the Na'vi made me want to be one of them. I can't stop thinking about all the things that happened in the film and all of the tears and shivers I got from it," Mike posted. "I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora and the everything is the same as in 'Avatar.' "

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Movies/01/11/avatar.movie.blues/index.html

Now I didn't go as far as contemplating suicide (or did I? ^_-), but for many, this movie will make you yearn for more Avatar as you leave the theatre. I know /tv/ was jammed pack with Avatar threads until New Years after this movie was released.

Since its not been mentioned yet; Avatar is going to be a trilogy.

It didn't seem like it needed a sequel...

Probably just gonna milk this cash cow since they can though.

Saw it on DVD and thought it was so-so at best. Would love to see it in 3D, but due to things like supply and demand and a free market changing the price of movie tickets in Communist China, they cost about 35 USD each now... And it definitely ain't worth that much.

I had no expectations that the storyline would be good, I just went for the graphics as a precursor for Battle Angel.
Even with no expectations of Avatar it still sucked though.

I thought it was an excellent film. The story of the movie wasn't BAD, it just wasn't particularly original. But then, some of the best stories aren't the ones that are unique in plot. This movie gets its originality from its immense world, which is incredibly real.

I think this is definitely a movie which has greater impact on the big screen. The bigger, the better; 3D didn't bring much to it for me, I saw it both ways. But in any case, go see it unless you have a 50" at home.

Well i saw it the other day.

in 3d, though The 3D didn't actually stand out.

The animation and stuff was alright

but the story was meh

cliche imo

The original script is 100x better than the one used in the film;

Spoilers, obviously.

You guys should check the link above, just goes to show how great a writer Cameron really is.

Pocahontas with science

01-14-2010, 05:32 AM
Meh, you guys are crazy. I totally liked the movie. Nevr seen Pocahontas or Dune (since Avatar' story is very similar) so the story was new to me. Think the CG is awesome (far more better than Advent Children wtf), and the story is ok. Defo, watching it in 3D gives the user a better experience :D

Story sucked.

They aimed to be thought provoking and failed terribly.

The visuals made my striate cortex's panties wet.

It was entertaining.

Is it the next starwars? I don't know.

10 bucks says that Disney jacked Pocahontas from someone else. Did you know they jacked Lion King from some Japanese people?

I would have linked this pic too, but you beat me to the punch =/

Graphics were definitely amazing though, I'd definitely watch in 3D.

You will miss an awesome experience.

The movie stands on its own with a solid storyline (although there were some minor issues that stand out like the humane nature of the indigenous alien folk, when you watch it youll realize and of course the pocahontas similarities) and has great effects. But seeing it in 3D just makes the quality and the experience much more immersive.

I highly recommend going to the cinema for this one. It is highly worth it and probably, at least imo, the best movie experience of 2009.

As many others have said, you go and watch avatar for the 'experience', not because it's a good movie.

Me and my friends were nearly the only ones who loudly laughed when the human pioneers in the military base said something like: "We're looking for this new material - unobtanium."

This made baby jesus cry. :(

The story is good and will hold on it's own by itself. The way that you are immersed in the movie seeing it in IMAX 3D, you'll be missing a once in a lifetime experience, IMO. All I could say when I walked out was "holy sh*t". Even the previews (Hubble Telescope) at the IMAX theater will BLOW YOUR MIND!

It's supposed to be a joke, and unobtanium is an actual geological term.

Watched it in full 3D IMAX cinema with huge 18m tall screen so YES this is something that should not be missed. Don't expect fabulous plot, don't expect important problems mentioned or discussed, don't expect complex personalities - this movie is simple as **** - but just prepare yourself for one beautiful experience - all this jungle shots, ornithopters flights, animals, the way they seems so close and so real is why you should spend a bit of cash to do it correct way. Dont expect too much and you wont be disappointed.

Dances with wolves is better if you appreciate a story rather than flashy graphics (N/A if you actually appreciate the computing/design aspect)

Dances with wolves is better regardless imo.
