View Full Version : Juking like the 1950s - How to juke [Pictures]

Newly updated with 2.0.13.3 map (Feb 13th, 2011)!
Juking: When being pursued, it's what you do to 'lose' them or 'get them off your tail'. Common strategies to employ a juke would be going through the hidden paths in the trees, running erradically, and turning a corner to hide in the fog, and standing there, then running backwards when they are turning the corner as well.
Here are some basic spots you should learn to be able to efficiently juke, gank, and utilize to the best of your skill. Each picture has a screenshot of the minimap, marked in a white square, of where the spot is. The white paths are where you can run through freely. When I have time, I'll update this post with a detailed description of each spot, how you can use it to your advantage, and more. Perhaps I might actually think of a better way to explain juking rather than copying and pasting from my guide (see sig).... or perhaps not. Who knows? Confused by the terminology, or eager to learn more basic tips for new players? See my sig again (obvious link whoring btw).
In addition to all of these spots, a common tip that almost every new player (and even some experienced ones!) forget is that you should almost always hug the trees when fleeing. There's little notches and trees that stick out, allowing you to keep fogging (Being enshourded in the Fog of War, so you are not in the line of sight [los] of the enemy) the pursuer, so they can't cast a spell on you.
Another tip, well, rule you should follow, is ALWAYS CARRY A HOMECOMING STONE (TP, Teleport, Hearth, Scroll). Unless you are Nymphora (which you should still use one, since it's a shorter cast time than her ultimate), or have Posthaste, carry these stones around all the time. They will save you. Turning a corner and hiding in a crevice between a few trees and landing that portal may be your only way out alive.

Alright, above this block of text is one of the most dominant 'secret' areas in the southern part of the map. It is a defensive pathing directly under the tower, or a nice place to sit and gank. This path is very easy to move around in and use. The normal curve the northernmost 'route' takes goes from one side of the tower to the other, but be warned that if you are Hellborne, the tower WILL see you and WILL attack you back there (assuming it's not focusing something else, like an Imp or another Hero). Many players are unaware that there's a 'bottom tier' to this area, connected by the two vertical paths. This hugs the very bottom of the map, and extends to the west quite a distance. Very useful to hide in if you expect a gank incoming, but don't expect it to save you in high level play - they'll look there first!
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/4116/jukespot2.jpg
In the center lane, this is one of the strongest and well used juking spots. A thin path connects the two long halves of this thick of trees together, with two smaller terminal paths on the north, providing a good place to set up Devourer's hooks, Valkyrie's javelin, and even just simple waiting and ganking. If you're being chased and are near death (or going to die if they catch you), run into this area, through the other side, and then hug the tree line back around and go for the tower for safety.
http://img378.imageshack.us/img378/536/jukespot3.jpg
These three vertical paths are very well known, so chances are that you already know of them. In case you don't, or perhaps don't use the well enough, here's some tips. You can zig-zag in and out of them, such as going through the path one way, then going up and through a different way, just looping here and there to lose your enemies. Be careful that you don't loop too much and run back INTO them (then it just feels like one of those Scooby Doo chase scenes: see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7ACUJ-0ARY for more information). Also, you can use these areas to gank behind the bottom Legion tower where heroes may be sitting, unsuspecting of their impending demise.
http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/1011/jukespot4.jpg
I've never seen anyone except me use this weird hook place, but it's really useful for hiding in when waiting to gank a Hellborne hero between the two bottom lane towers, or for running to and hiding for either faction. Personally, getting a teleport off back there after you lose your opponents who may think you beelined down the lane can save your rear.
http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/8031/jukespot5.jpg
This is the path to the Legion's secret shop from the upper river. Everyone should know this path if they've played the game at least once here, so no use in over-describing it. It's just common knowledge. What some people do not know, though, is there are small nooks all over this area, letting you escape and gank players who may be shopping, or running through the shop back to base. Perhaps you are one of those players running, and instead you hide in one of the nooks and hit hold position as the whole enemy team runs past you, and you sneak out the back way.
http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/9771/jukespot6.jpg
This spot doesn't get too much use, but if you're going to gank the Legion in the middle lane at their tower when they're defending, and the rest of your team isn't there yet, this is a great place to sit and wait. It's out of sight of the ramp and pretty much everywhere else unless they run back there, and if they do, you either kill the person who found you, or enjoy having your bowels scrubbed clean with their many body parts.
http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/8347/jukespot7.jpg
Sorry, I messed up on this picture and it would take me like a good 20 seconds to go and fix it, re-save, and re-upload it here and I just can't be bothered alright? This takes place just next to the front Legion tower in the middle lane (you can see a square shape on the minimap if you look hard enough). Anyways, this is a great place for the middle laner (well, you should almost always let middle solo) to retreat to if being harassed a lot. It's next to the tower, so you'll have full sight of your enemy if they chase you as the tower beats on them, and there's a lot of places you can LoS them from. Just weave in and out, or sit in the middle of it and wait for them to come to you. For others, it's a good place to lose heroes and confuse them if you are having a team fight in the middle, and are about to die. Just run into there and go out one path, then turn around and hug the outside tree line backwards and you're home free.

http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/2122/jukel.jpg
Another juke spot that isn't too widely used. You can eat a tree to go deeper (inception is too old now or there would be a good joke there). Heroes like Magmus or Hag can sit inside and wait for the Legion to push up the lane before initiating. Just don't wait too long! *Courtesy of Schm0ftie.
The red squiggles are spots you can run into on the map, and the blue ones are ones you'd hatchet/treeeat to juke through. Obviously I left out the actual lanes and paths you can clearly figure out yourself :)

Keep looking out for new ways to utilize these areas. Ingenuity is always welcome when it comes to a game like this, being entirely predictable is not a good idea. Always try to watch your opponents, allies, and even yourself in how you juke and escape, or pursue, others. Learning how people move around the map can net you kills that you would have not gotten otherwise, as you can nearly predict their next movement and be one step ahead.
More advanced techniques, such as using Enhanced Marchers, are a great addition to your arsenal. Running into a thicket of trees and into the fog, and then using the Enhanced Marchers when you know your pursuer follows, and running back out of the fog is a nice trick. They'll lose a second or two on you because of reaction times, as well as not expecting you to run BACK into them, so they won't have a spell ready right then.
ALWAYS keep in mind of certain heroes that may be able to kill you regardless of juking, though. Such heroes like Pyromancer have AoE (Area of Effect, skills that effect an area [durrrr]) abilities that can hit you through the fog and trees, even if they can't see you. A well placed stun by Pyro can keep you in place long enough to kill you, if it didn't already. Defiler has her Wave of Death, which is a giant wave in a cone-shape that does 300 damage (~230 to heroes) which can hit you through the trees as well. Hellbringer is the worst case of all of these, though, because his ultimate not only is a HUGE area that stuns all units for a second, it destroys all the trees. So yeah, basically he can **** up your Christmas right there.

Nice work, can you still juke them behind the tree on the top right (Sentinel) creep spawn? I know there was a tree you could walk behind on dota, not sure if its in HoN.

Like that lone little tree just floating out there in the middle of the Legion (Sentinel) base? Yeah, it's there, but the fog in this game makes it harder to hide behind.
Or are you talking about the few trees that are outside of the base, just a few paces north-east of the bottom lane creep spawn? I know there's an inlet there you can snuggle into, but there's no real pathway to run around, it's still a good place to tuck into when running, then burst out with phase boots and screw the pursuer up.

Yeah, I missed a few spots, like one you mentioned, etc. They aren't crucial and don't have much use, I mainly listed the big ones. You are right I forgot to pink string it on the minimap though. I hide there a lot when I'm scared of a gank rofl

Good guide. I didn't know about the outer edges until a few hours of play, it's a whole new world of ganking once you figure out where it paths back.
I just realized, you left out Kongor :O
Kongor's area has LOS blockers and most people don't think to chase into there.

The path to the right of Scourge secret shop does NOT fully connect in HoN like it does in DotA. Needs to be changed imo :D

The way you posted that link made me think it was HoN footage and I also translated 737317 to Teteit for some reason, maybe I'm just a nerd >_> I love how the chubby guy at the end falls over and stumbles to the door he was supposed to go to, classic!
Minimap needs some purple squiggles just right of Legion's middle tower. Slightly north west of the cliff in the forest, otherwise it's perfect :P

Btw, in HoN there's a tree blocking the path of the forest area near the Hellbourne Secret Shop, which has gotten me killed so many times. I just can't get used to not being able to run through there. I'm talking about the path close to the edge of the cliff northeast of the Secret. Running in there now is just a dead end. :(
You might wanna mention this in the guide until they fix it, unless it's intended I hope it's a bug that will be fixed though.
OH: The same goes for the Hellbourne First Middle Tower, the jukespot to the right of the tower there is also a dead end, just one of the path's though, the one right next to the tower. Normally it should lead in to the rest of the paths.
Moar edit: You might also want to mention that Enhanced Marchers (Phase Boots) can be quite a fun tool to juke with, if you run into a dead end, the opponent expects you to have no way out and then you come running through him from the shadows, can actually buy you some time if you can get into fog after running through him fast enough.

there is another one i frequently use to escape ganks on bot lane.
if u play Legion and are in front of the 1st hell tower, dont cross the river but walk just to ure right (still legion side of river) just where the legion tree line ends. u can go pretty far back there and i did avoid a lot of gangs comming from behind with that path.

There's a juke spot in the middle Sentinel neutral camp (on the left side of where the creeps spawn, there are 2 trees in which you can juke enemies with). You missed that one :D.
If you're not sure where it is, watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P758_GR46TQ&feature=channel_page
Pay attention to the last part (the Ogre Magi juke) and you'll see where it is :)

Died off this too after doing an epic Juke of 3/4 of the map.
@Viole : Maybe put a point or two in about using Runes of Blight to creatively Juke? It was a lot easier in DotA with the imba axe, but I've often used them to cut down a tree and sneak through the neutral spawns in the Legion forest.

Vadi, thank you so very much :). I tried to do a full zoom out to get a big map picture, but it just kind of all turned black before i would have even be at a good distance to make a panorama map image :\ (max video settings, cam distance 50000). I had painted all the lines into the map and it looked kind of... bare, so I then put pathways of everything and connected, and it is very very hectic and ugly looking, but it does the job. Perhaps if I had photoshop and could make opaque paths it would be better, but meh. Too poor ;)

I remember an Armadon player with Post Haste who was regularly running into our base, nearly killing (and sometimes actually doing so) us, then he would run into the trees next to the pool (on the Hellbourne side) and he would teleport out. It was ingenious, because we would lose sight and stop trying to auto attack, and he would teleport away. It was a one-way thing, but still, it was there, and proved a great way to get out of the base fast. I'm not sure if it has a twin in the Legion's base, though.

You missed my favourite juke spot, Legion mid 3rd tower. On the west side in the trees theres a little inlet you can hide in, and if you plan your tangoing right you can make a place to juke by eating the second tree south from the entrance to the woods and then eating the one tree that blocks its path out. I used this so much in dota, just using it more now in hon.

Great guide! Tons of information, a friendlier guide author for a change, excellent :)
Can you still juke in the Hellbourne weak camp spot? In Dota, from the right strong camp, you can turn left towards the weak camp, go a bit down towards it, and go right before the creeps into the trees. Works every time. Can somebody check?
Very nice, maybe you could add a hatchet/tango juke list as well as the idea of juking into neutral camps when its night? That nearly always screws people over :D
I have some quite nice hatchet/tango juking spots, especially around the Legion area. If you wanna add them or want me to screen shot places and you add them then just PM me :D

For whatever reason the image of the large minimap with tons of juking paths no longer works. I saved it a little while back so here is a new link you can update with.

why is it called juking?
I can throw one advanced tactic here: If you are going in a secret pathway and you know that there is someone catching you just in seconds, just press H, it will block the path and hon's engine will calculate a new path for the enemy. And in most cases it's the opposite way. Don't try this if your opponent just used phase or has other unitwalking ability.

There are some "trees you can eat" missing on bot lane between first tower and outpost.
But really, really good topic, :D

Should probably mention in the guide that you don't just use the "juke" spots to run through and onto the other side. Being unpredictable can save your life even if that means turning a corner and running towards there tower instead of yours, in those moments where the enemy has to assume where you went just turn a corner eat two trees quickly and you have yourself a new hiding spot, if you do this fast enough by the time they turn the corner they think you've gone towards your base and will chase in that direction.

I discovered a way to easily find juke spots in-game, just go to the console (ctrl+f8) and type "cg_drawNavGrid true". Congrats, you just enabled your own personal forest path-finder:
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8061/shot1220.th.jpg (http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8061/shot1220.jpg) http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/2166/shot1223.th.jpg (http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/2166/shot1223.jpg)
note: the grid is about the size of the screen, but it is centered on wherever your mouse is.
For quicker enabling/disabling bind it to a key, ie:
bind CTRL+PERIOD "cg_drawNavGrid true"
bind CTRL+COMMA "cg_drawNavGrid false"
Haven't tested it online yet though, so I'm not sure if it will work outside of practice.

Nice, knew most of em already.
Just to add, I believe its possible to juke at the Legion Creep camp nearest to the bottom rune aswell. The trees on the left hand side can be used to run in and from underneath, and directly into the creeps. Handy if you really wanna screw with em ;)

Other than that, revealed some nice hiding spots, thanks. But since pathing in hon is beyond terrible, you can juke by not moving, enemy will go back randomly lol.

You missed one awesome tree eating spot!
Bottom line, at the shop. You marked two juke spots there, one at the shop, and another one just above the other one (just check your picture where you marked them all); you can eat a tree between them and thus juke to the shop, and then eat a tree, and proceed going towards the HB's tower!
I hope that was good enough explanation.

I love that Legion bot lane next to tower juke. I just run circles around the center patch of trees while some guy just goes "omg i know that jukespot i can catch him" and runs around until the tower takes him out.

I think you should include a portion about Juking using ramps. if you run up a ramp with someone chasing you close their likely to click on top of the ramp as they lose vision of you. This gives you a chance to run back down the ramp gaining some extra space. I use it very often and its extremely effective.

This is a very underestimated hookspot and tpspot if you are at the bot lane. Chop down the tree i marked and you get a rather large spot to hide in.

Did you know that if you`re being attacked by a ranged hero, the missles they attack you with give them enough visibility to attack you continuously, even if they don`t actually have line of sight. How do you juke that?

You could add advanced ones like single tree jukes. IE the one tree in front of Kongor or the one below the second tier HB tower. Also the little spot in front of the HB ancients (best tp jukespot imo) and below ancients.

Though you miss 1 jukespot at this pic:

On the right path leading south of the tower. Going further south from there before hitting the edge of the map you can sneak in to the right.
Just 1 tree-space of hiding. Extremely useful

This juke spot is missing on the front page. It is mentioned on a full FoC map but it is not completly shown.
Would be an honor if you add it to your guide.
Top Lane, below the outpost. Perfectly to juke or to gank players on that lane.

on forests of caldaver there is quite a neat juking spot on hellbourne supercreeps spot, its only really useful at night when they dont auto attack you but w/e ill tell you anyway if u didnt already know, i see that you have an ickle piggle line to the left of them but if u go as far right on those supercreeps as possible you get to a little line of gap which then veers up like a 90 degree rightangle and it can be made easily bigger (its opposite to the 3rd hellbourne bottom lane tower)
thanks if you add and bye from me :P

You should add a quick guide of block-juking in tight "two or three-way" spots. What im speaking of iswhen you are chased, entering such a spot anhold position 1-2 inches in, resulting in people chasi you is clicking furtherthan you are standing will turn away when their vision shows you as an obstacle to your rightclicks, trying to find another path. This is a great way to make people fail their chases.
EDIT: typos cuz of adjusting to touchscreen.
