Wildsoul

In loving memory of BooBoo
For some Wildsoul is an incredibly difficult and frustrating hero to play and for others he is a complex hero the requires control but is rewarding to master. No matter what camp you fall into its pretty easy to see that a well played wildsoul is almost unstoppable. This guide will look at every possible choice you could consider while playing Wildsoul and many that you never would have thought of. It will go from fighting alone in the jungle to soloing mid and then to the difficulties of playing in a dual lane. This guide is not going to be a fast read and it will not tell you how to play Wildsoul it will only show you the majority of his viable options.
The first thing you need to know is who Wildsoul is. To put it at its most basic Wildsoul is 2 heroes each with their strengths and weaknesses but making up one whole hero. To play Wildsoul well you have to be able to control 2 units at once this means your game play won't be relaxed you will constantly be giving orders to and in most cases this requires you to make twice as many commands as you would with any other hero. to compensate for the increased number of units you have to control and focus on wildsoul essentially only has passive skills that you don't have to pay attention to.
You are going to end up playing Wildsoul as a carry since that is his only real choice as a role. Wildsoul also has the possibility to just get defensive items and be an unkillable tank but it is less optimal then a carry build. He also does have a minor sub role as a pushing hero since Beardulon does bonus damage to towers but this should just be a side note and not really a reason to pick him. The real choice when building items on him is who you prioritize Wildsoul or Beardulon. Your choice of items on Beardulon and Wildsoul will be critical as well as the order you buy what for who and when you move items from beardulon to wildsoul.
Wildsoul's first skill is Summon Beardulon.
Beardulon is not a hero unit. Stats do not effect him at all!
http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/5421/12458796.png
The tooltip does not give us much information at all on its own.
The most important thing to know is that Beardulon has a 925 unit leash from Wildsoul that does not allow him to attack any units when he is out side of the 925 unit leash.
When Beardulon dies he also deals 100x his level in damage to Wildsoul so don't let him die when your health is low. It is also important to note that he gives 100 gold to the enemy as well as a good chunk of xp when killed so it is always better to send him back to the fountain when he is low on HP then let him die or be killed near enemy heroes.
Letting forest creeps kill him is generally acceptable since it is faster to summon him again than to heal him. If the skill is on cooldown and still has a long way to go, it is probably a good idea to send him back to the fountain and hang out in a lane for a bit.
http://i46.tinypic.com/2hr0mtg.png
Beardulon also gains extra health, armor, and damage with each level on top of the abilities he gains.
http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/1180/51181014.png
Beardulon has 4 abilities that he gains from level 1 to 4.
The first ability, Return, is activated and the only one that is not a passive. As seen in the image above you get Return at the start and then Entangling Claws at level 3 then your last 2 passives at level 4.
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/974/54599604.png
Return is incredibly useful if you use it correctly.
One of the most basic uses is to send Beardulon back to the fountain to get items for Wildsoul and/or heal him up, then use Return to cut the travel time in half.
The next useful tactic you can pull off with this ability is to scout the fog with Beardulon and the Return him if the other team tries to kill him.
One of my favorite tactics when playing Wildsoul is to use Beardulon to block opponents who try to chase me. I do this by running and casting Return on Beardulon every 5 seconds so he blocks the area behind me and gets a couple hits on the enemy. Doing this well can save your life and in some cases get you a kill.
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/1166/99898447.png
This ability is considered Beardulon's strongest passive giving him a strong root that is deadly and allows you to immobilize the opponent so you can beat him to death. A lucky string of Entangle procs makes for easy kills at lower levels.
It is important to note that Entangling Claws is an Attack Modifier so if you buy other Attack Modifiers for Beardulon it will not stack unless you have the micro to switch his Modifier after each attack and even in that cases it would not be ideal since Entangling Claws is a percentage-chance-based Modifier. My recommendation is to never put an Attack Modifier item on Beardulon since the stats are bad for him and you can put it on Wildsoul instead.
This ability means it is a good idea to get a good amount of attack speed on Beardulon so you hit them more and have a more chances to proc an entangle. This ability heavily impacts your choice in items more so then any other ability.
http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/7587/62712313.png
Demolish is a strong passive that Beardulon gains at level 4 and gives Wildsoul a bit of flavor as a pushing hero. While it is overshadowed by Entangling Claws it allows you to take down buildings in seconds and should not be underestimated.
A good tactic with Wildsoul is to buy a home coming stone and find some place to stand in the forest where no one can see you that is 1000 or less units from the tower. In this way Beardulon can take down a tower quickly and you can teleport out before the other team can find and kill you.
http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/835/46510242.png
Magic resist is also gotten at level 4 and makes Beardulon able to ignore magic damage. Nothing really remarkable about it but it's worth noting.
Wildsoul's second ability is Wild.
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/6914/18954289.png
The tooltip is not quite right in the fact that it does not just give Wildsoul and Beardulon the buff but in fact any unit controlled by the player who controls Wildsoul. So your courier, dominated minions, or puzzle box minions would get the Wild buff as well.
This ability is generally leveled after Summon Beardulon and Natural Attunement but before Bear Form. The speed bonus from this skill makes Wildsoul easily one of the fastest heroes in the game. The mana cost is very small and unless you max it out first you can cast it when ever you want.
If Beardulon is dead and has 20 seconds before you can summon him back, it is a good idea not to refresh this buff and instead wait until you can summon Beardulon so you both get the buff.
Wildsoul's 3rd skill is Natural Attunement.
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/8605/82578660.png
This skill is passive and makes all of your other skills better. It is pretty bland but strong and worth putting points into when ever you cannot put points into Summon Beardulon. The only real question about this skill is if it is worth getting it at level 2 and 3 instead of 2 and 4. The question comes down to if the extra damage is worth more then bonus health and +1 armor on beardulon. I tend to think it is but it comes down to personal preference.
Wildsoul's 4th skill is Bear Form.
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/9230/44583530.png
This skill slows your speed down and makes you melee. In return you get a lot of extra health and armor. This skill is normally taken after you maxed out every thing else or at levels 10-11. You want to use this in team fights most of the time but again the situation is incredibly important and can't just be boiled down to toggle this on in x situation. In most cases you want to have it on in team fights but if ranged attack would be more beneficial you should not use it. When you are in Bear Form, you gain a fifth skill.
Bear Form skill: Battle Cry
http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/6185/10390273.png
This is the only skill you gain from Bear Form and it is located to the right hand of Bear Form's icon. This ability levels with the level of Bear Form even though the tooltip does not show this. It gives +20/40/60 damage and +2/4/6 armor in a 900 radius around you at each respective level and is really useful. It can be worth it to shift into Bear Form to cast Battle Cry then back out again, in a lot of situations.

Items
Starting items
http://honwiki.net/w/images/0/04/Logger%27s_Hatchetitem.gif + http://honwiki.net/w/images/0/05/Iron_Buckleritem.gif +http://honwiki.net/w/images/4/4c/Health_Potionitem.gif
Hatchet + shield + potion are pretty generic starting items for wildsoul and they work well. You put the hatchet and shield on beardulon then have wildsoul carry the potion in case he needs to heal up for some reason. If you are going to jungle and know you won't need the potion you can switch it out for 2 minor totems for extra damage on wildsoul or just save the gold so you rush an item faster.
Alchemist Bones
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_Gloves3.jpg
Alchemist bones perfect item for wildsoul or deceptive trap? Alchemist bones gives you attack speed and increases your ability to farm. If you are a good farmer and can get a mock before the 20 minute mark alchemist bones is a great item to pick up since it is going to delay your mock a minute or two. Now if you are a bad farmer alchemist bones is a bad choice because you are already getting the mock late and the delay just pushes it back to late. You want beardulon to carry the bones but switch them to wildsoul to use when ever they are of cool down then back to beardulon. As soon as you have the gold for alchemist bones you want to buy them and courier them out to you or send beardulon back to pick them up.
First Item
http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/images/items/Item_Damage10.jpg
Mock of Brilliance might be the most popular item on wildsoul. It is really strong on him but only if you can farm it before or by the 25 minute mark any time after that and it is less effective. The hardest part about getting this item is that you have to rush it so you are not getting early game items or boots. Once you have a mock all of your patience in farming it pays off because you become a killing mechine as well as a farming machine. You slap it onto beardulon who is pretty hard to kill at this point and watch him maul people to death as well as rip towers apart. It is also useful to have on beardulon because he can run circles around the other team preventing them from using portal keys. End game you want to put it on wildsoul instead of beardulon but that should only be around the 40-50 minute mark when the other team can kill beardulon easy.
Disclaimer: mock is not a farming item it is best used when gotten early and used to win the game in at least 10 minutes after you get it. If you intended to farm instead of push you should not buy mock and instead focus on different items like warpcleft or frostburn.
Second Items
http://honwiki.net/w/images/2/2a/Warped_Cleftitem.gif
Warpcleft is common to get on beardulon for the attack speed as well as the fact that it builds into 2 different strong late game items. If the game is going to be over before you really farm up a good amount of late game items Gloves of the Swift are a cheaper option that will give you more attack speed at the cost of not really upgrading into any thing and taking up a lot of inventory slots on beardulon.
Boots
http://honwiki.net/w/images/7/7d/Marchersitem.gif or http://honwiki.net/w/images/8/88/Steambootsitem.gif or http://honwiki.net/w/images/2/2a/Ghost_Marchersitem.gif
Now the question of what type of boot to buy for wildsoul and beardulon is a little harder then for most heroes. For beardulon it is pretty simple because steam boots stats don't help beardulon at all they are ignorable. Now the question comes down to marchers vs ghost marchers. If you feel comfortable with the little extra micro for using the phase walking on ghost marchers they are a good choice as a luxury item. Most of the time you will just get normal marchers on beardulon since that putts him really close to max movement speed and none of the upgrades offer him any thing that interesting.
For wildsoul it is a little harder to pick. Steam boots are really good since you have have them on str when you are ranged and need the health and agi when you are in bear form and are better of with the extra damage. Steamboots how ever are a little slower and make it harder to keep up with beardulon. phase can be nice when you really need to keep on some ones tail but don't really out weigh steam boots unless you really need to keep up with beardulon. Not upgrading your boots and just having normal marchers is also fine since you are going to be really fast with just normal boots. Doing this will let you work on bigger items and most of the time you wont notice not having upgraded boots.
Filler Items
A filler item is a cheap item that gives pure stats and that you buy multiple copies of to fill up beardulon's inventory. The only 3 cheap enough to be worth talking about are gloves of the swift, guardians ring, and punch dagger.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/a/a0/Gloves_of_the_Swiftitem.gif
Gloves of the Swift are the most common of the 3 and easily the best. You are going to want to buy the gloves when you have no intention of getting a warpcleft and beardulon or after you have moved most of the attack speed items from beardulon to wildsoul.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/3/33/Guardian_Ringitem.gif
Guardian Ring is more of a situational filler item. later in the game beardulon can get riped apart by the other teams physical carry and at that point you might decided he needs to be a bit harder to kill and that is where the rings come in. if you don't have this problem then it will only ever be used as a filler item late game when you put all the items on wildsoul.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/4/45/Punch_Daggeritem.gif
Punch Dagger is going to be the least common of these filler items and odds are you are never going to see a situation where you will be buying them. The one reason to load up on punch daggers is if you have a warpcleft on beardulon and are not going for a mock and instead pushing hard early game. Know the option is out there and use it if the team is in a push situation but also know that it is not common.
Luxury Items
http://honwiki.net/w/images/e/e9/Frostburnitem.gif
Frostburn is an interesting item choice for wildsoul (it should never be put on beardulon.) It gives you the extra movement speed you need to keep up with beardulon as well as a nice slow that helps you stick to your target. The stats are decent and it makes up for the ms you would lose in bear form its sort of a middle of the road item. I would recommend this item over mock for people who are new to wildsoul and still getting the feel for him but if you know what you are doing its more of a luxury item that would be after a warpcleft.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/1/1c/Charged_Hammeritem.gif
Charged Hammer is one of the items to build the warpcleft into it works well on beardulon or wildsoul since its pure stats and nothing is wasted on beardulon. The buff that you can put up with this item is also really useful since both wildsoul and beardulon are pretty tanky and a good target for the buff. If you have this item on beardulon it is a good idea to switch it to wildsoul to toss up the buff when every you can then put it back on beardulon. You want to upgrade to this item if you feel like you need extra damage more then you need protection.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/1/15/Daemonic_Breast_Plateitem.gif
Daemonic Breastplate is your other other option for a warpcleft upgrade. It makes you much harder to kill with the extra armor and is a decent supportive carry item since it buffs your allies and debuffs your enemies. All around it is a good upgrade option and like charged hammer it will work just as well on beardulon as it will on wildsoul. You want to go for this item when not getting killed is more important then that little extra damage and you have team mates who will benefit from the aura.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/4/44/Wingbowitem.gif
One of my favorite luxury items on wildsoul the evasion really makes him hard to kill on top of his high health and the damage stats on this thing really make you dangerous. I tend to get this on wildsoul after i have a mock and warpcleft on beardulon. If some one on the other team has a savage mace you are going to want to go for some thing else since you will lose out on the evasion.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/a/a8/Shield_Breakeritem.gif
Shield breaker good all around damage item that you should never put on beardulon but is nice on wildsoul. This item is also luxury and only some thing you want to get after your core items. Make sure no one else on your team is getting this item since the -armor wont stack other heroes are better shield breaker carries then wildsoul but if no one else on your team is going to get one its as good of an option as any thing since you and beardulon will benefit from the -armor as well as every one else on your team.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/7/79/Savage_Maceitem.gif
Savage Mace is a good late game option if you are having problems with evasion heroes. The damage you get from it is quite high and your fast attack speed means you are going to proc the passive a lot. It might be eclipsed by rift shards if the other team has no evasion but if you already have rift shards savage mace is a perfectly fine option to up your crits.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/thumb/a/aa/Riftshardsitem.gif/128px-Riftshardsitem.gif
Rift shards are great as a 3 or 4 dps item since once you hit 200-300 damage the crits really start to get big. This item can work on beardulon but wildsoul should have more damage so its more of a late game item for wildsoul. This item is a bit better then savage mace but if the other team has any evasion savage mace might be the better option.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/c/c5/Nullfire_Bladeitem.gif
Nullfire blade is a excellent damage item and provides strong utility. If your team needs one putting it on wildsoul is an excellent choice and preferable to getting it on carries who need other items more. Of course this would be some thing you got after mock and if your team really needs it asap before a warp cleft. This item is situational so you won't be picking it up a lot but you should know it is a good option.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/a/a4/Shrunken_Headitem.gif
Shrunken head is of course useful on all carries but this also falls into the luxury item catagory. You want to get some items that are going to make you a real threat before you get this once you have mock if you feel like you are getting nuked down this item is a ok option but unless it is a real problem i would go for more damage items.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/f/fa/Brutalizeritem.gif
Brutalizer is one of those items some people swear by and others hate. Personally i went through the omg brutalizer is the best item on wildsoul stage and got over it pretty quick. The main problem with this item is that while it allows you to disable some one hard core you are giving up a lot of farm to disable them when you could just be killing them instead. The problem with wildsoul is that you need to spend a lot of gold to make him a late game carry and while its great to perma disable some one you are not going to kill them quickly because you just won't have the damage for it. You can also only do this to a single target and if any one on the other team can interrupt you for 1-2 seconds your target is going to get away. I don't recommend this item at all unless its late late game and you have a lot of gold sitting around and feel like wasting it.

Skill Builds
you only really have 2 effective variances on the skill builds you can go with. The first variance is from levels 1-5. The two difference between these is that the first looks at making Natural Attunement harder to kill and the second makes him do more damage. In most cases i like to go with the second skill build since more damage helps me farm faster but the newer player might like beardulon to be harder to kill and thus go the first path. The big thing about both these things is that you get beardulon to level 3 as soon as possible so you get entangle.

Summon beardulon
Summon beardulon
The main goal of wildsouls skill build is to have beardulon do as much damage as possible to speed up your mock farm. This is achieved by getting beardulon to level 2 so he can proc entangle for extra damage and then maxing natural attunement next so beardulons damage gets upgraded. You don't focus on putting points in summon beardulon past level 2 because it only gives him more health and armor.
The only variance is when you get bear form some people like to get it at 6/11/16 and others 10/11/16 and a few 14/15/16. It all comes down to taste and i normally go with the 10/11/16 build since i don't feel like bear form is all that useful at level 6. So now that we have looked at all the variances you could see in skill builds here is what i normally go with.

There is another build that some players go with when they hate microing that skips beardulon and just gets wild and natural attunement for a right click kill hero. If you are going to go with this kind of skill build you might as well play a different hero because you are only playing half of wildsoul and the weaker half at that.
This Skill build does not really change depending on where you are it works well for the jungle, solo, and dual lanes.
Game Plan
The first thing you want to know when you are going into a game is what lane you are going to be in. Wildsoul has 3 options as far as lanes go solo mid, jungle, and dual lane. Each of these has its pros and cons and can often be over looked as options by the players who religiously jungle with wildsoul.
Solo mid
In most situations i think solo mid is the best option you are going to farm faster then if you are in the jungle and if you can micro well you are a beast to out last hit. This is more likely to be done in a competitive game but is just as good in pubs.
Pros
More gold then jungling
more experience
possible hero kills
less danger from ganks
good at last hitting and denying
Cons
Enemy hero in lane
more likely to take damage
other hero can deny you gold and xp
denying another team mate solo mid
Jungle
jungling is the most common option for wildsoul players. If offers you almost no risk farming and supports rushing a big item first. In pubs this often a great way to go since it gives you another solo lane and more farm for your team over all.
Pros
Relatively safe if the other team is bad
easy farming
you don't need consumables
takes less skill
gives you another solo lane
Cons
can be hard if your extra solo lane is against a strong 2 hero set up
vulnerable to ganks
can be countered with spawn blocks
Dual Lane
a dual lane is the least common place you will see wildsoul. It can however be just as strong of an option as any of the other choices. He can farm just as well in a dual lane with a good baby sitter and just like solo mid he does not weaken any of the lanes by doing this.
Pros
keeps lane strength up
harder to counter
possible to go for hero kills
safer option since some one watches your back
Cons
less experience
lane could be brutal with bad baby sitter
less gold if lane mate once to get last hits as well
uncommon in lower level games can make people rage.
Early Game
Jungling
So you wanted to go down the jungle path this is pretty typical a means you are going to want to stay in the jungle for the first 20 minutes or until you get a mock only leaving if you see a risk free gank opportunity. Always be on the look out for the other team trying to gank you and if you are really paranoid buy wards to set up around the jungle or have a support player buy them for you.
First thing first you must have the iron buckler and loggers hatchet on beardulon to jungle effectively. The first thing you need to know about jungling is the until you hit around level 7 beardulon is going to die to creeps and thats fine. The only rule of thumb you should have to his death is that his cool down needs to be up so you can resummon him right away or it has around 10 seconds until it will be on cool down. If it does not meet one of those conditions you should send him back to the fountain to heal and maybe double pull a camp while you wait or hand out in a lane.
If beardulon is low on health but has 30 or so seconds before his cool down is up you can put the shield on wildsoul and have him tank the damage or you can have beardulon kite the creeps while wildsoul attacks them from a safe distance. It is not really worth the gold to use consumables to heal beardulon because of how much health he has and how comparatively little healing it does.
on to the second problem most people have when jungling before they hit magic level 5 and start breezing through creeps. It is a bad idea to take on minotaur or cat spawns when you are level 1 they just do to much damage to beardulon and you have to heal him and that slows you down a lot. You should avoid them until level 5. At the start you should kill the weak spawn point and pull the creeps back so their corpses won't block them from spawning again at 1 minute. Just to be safe you don't want to have any corpses in the spawn area after the :40 second mark. If you kill 2 of the weak creep spawns in a row it will put you at level 2 with little to no damage on beardulon.
Now you should run around killing the none minotaur and cat spawns until you hit level five then feel free to clear the minotaur and cat spawns out as well (you can kill minotaur and cat spawns if they are causing problems early on it will just slow down you farm a little don't be afraid of them if you have to kill them because of bad luck.) beardulon should die around or a little bit after his cool down finishes if you play it out this way and since his cool down is up let him die and just resummon him saves you a lot of time.
This covers pretty much all of the problems you might have jungling if you run into some thing else ask in this thread and i will sort it out for you.
Solo Mid/Dual Lane
Pretty much the same thing as being in the jungle you want to focus on last hits and denying. You are going to want to set up beardulon to be right next to the creep wave and when some one gets low command beardulon and wildsoul to attack that unit at the same time so its a lot harder to out last hit you. beardulon might take a bit of a beating from this but don't let him die send him back to the fountain when he gets low so you don't end up feeding with beardulon which can be just as bad as feeding with a hero death. You can farm faster in a good lane then you can in the jungle but the jungle is faster if you have a bad lane.
Mid Game
Mid game plays the same no matter how you laned. You know its mid game when you have your mock and a set of marchers for wildsoul and beardulon. During mid game gank any enemy who is on their own and push towers aggressively. The mock on beardulon makes you deadly and as long as you protect wildsoul they are going to have a really hard time stopping you. If all goes well you will end the game during mid game before you really farm any thing more then a mock and possibly pick up your warpcleft. It is important to finish the game during mid game so don't farm during since wildsoul is not a crazy hard late game carry like some other agi heroes.
Late Game
So winning mid game didn't work so well for you don't let the discourage you if it is a stalemate go back to farming and keep your high tier items on wildsoul since beardulon will most die pretty quick during this stage of the game. You can farm up all the items you need to be a hard carry and if your mid game went pretty well odds are your better of then the other teams carry.
Micro Tips
use the tab key to toggle between beardulon and wildsoul
try not to just select both and give them single commands
tabbing back and forth to give move commands gives you better control
practice is needed to get good at this.

This section is not comprehensive it is just some general hero information there are of course other heroes who work well as allies just none that really stick out.
Allies
http://honwiki.net/w/images/thumb/4/4b/Andromedahero.gif/70px-Andromedahero.gifAndromeda
her stun gives you enough time to get close to an enemy and hopefully proc entangle.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/thumb/0/02/Valkyriehero.gif/70px-Valkyriehero.gifValkyrie
She can solo a dual lane pretty well if you jungle and can help you go for a gank with her stun.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/thumb/d/db/Arachnahero.gif/70px-Arachnahero.gifArachna
good for a solo vs dual lane if you are in the jungle and once you entangle some one she can web them up really good.
Bad Allies
http://honwiki.net/w/images/thumb/7/75/Opheliahero.gif/70px-Opheliahero.gifOphelia
if you are going to jungle you don't want her on your team other wise she is fine.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/thumb/e/e5/Tempesthero.gif/70px-Tempesthero.gifTempest
if you are going to jungle you don't want her on your team other wise she is fine.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/thumb/2/25/Legionnairehero.gif/70px-Legionnairehero.giflego
if you are going to jungle you don't want her on your team other wise she is fine.
Enemies
http://honwiki.net/w/images/thumb/a/a1/Keeper_of_the_Foresthero.gif/70px-Keeper_of_the_Foresthero.gifKeeper of the Forest
Kotf can use his eyes to block forest spawns making it harder you to farm.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/thumb/7/77/Pyromancerhero.gif/70px-Pyromancerhero.gifPyromancer
His nuke can take wildsoul out really fast and thus take beardulon out of the picture as well.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/thumb/e/eb/Witch_Slayerhero.gif/70px-Witch_Slayerhero.gifWitch Hunter
his nuke takes out wildsoul and he has the disables to keep beardulon pinned down while you finish of wildsoul if he is still alive.
http://honwiki.net/w/images/thumb/e/e2/Pebbleshero.gif/70px-Pebbleshero.gifPebbles

Is mock of brilliance really necessary? I might try it out because i usually farm steamboots, thunderclaw, frostburn, then charged hammer on wildsoul and usually put boots with 2 haste gloves on booboo. Works decently, but ill try that out i guess

Rushing mock on beardulon is fantastic as long as you get it by the 25 minute mark. You pretty much can run around the map killing at will once you have it early game because people just don't have the health to survive being in the aura let alone getting mauled by the bear.

SnY is a very good item on him, giving the wildsoul ~500 movespeed in addition to easy damage/health to build into.
Biggest problem with the guide, in terms of build, is utilizing your cheap effective items to fill inventory slots.

Phase is very useful for getting through creeps or other heroes to hit your target ASAP.
Also:
Beardulon also gains extra health, armor, and damage with each level on top of the abilities he gains.
He infact doesn't gain damage, he gains movespeed.

frostburn is not bad now and i did mention that and still does not hold a candle to mock.
i could have emphasized getting the cheap items more then i did perhaps i will put another wall of text in for that.
phase is only as useful as the player using it worth buying if you can handle the micro other wise it should be passed up.
the damage thing is just a typo my bad now only if i could find it in my pages and pages of words >.<

because abyssal skull is bad it does not really give you any thing you need and costs to much.
you don't need the mana regen
you don't need the armor
life stealing is negligible and forces you into bear form
wildsoul likes +damage more then +agi making the bonus base damage unattractive
there are better items for the gold.

Is it possible for you to add a section on how to jungle with Wildsoul?
I gave it a go in Practice but my bear seemed to die pretty quickly, am I supposed to let him tank damage, then send him back to the pool and keep farming without him until he's healed?

How about skipping bear and just farming urself Frostburn, charged hammer,...?

I wanted to offer a few different suggestions.
At level 5, go gank. Your bear is never more over powered than he is at level 5. 1 root and the enemy is dead. Also great if you are in a lane instead of the forest. When you are in the forest, definitely avoid the catman. The minotaurs arent as bad, IMO. always go for the creep that does the most damage first since they are the ones that will damage you through the shield.
I go for a completely different item build. The first item I get is warpcleft and put it on the bear. Attack speed is crucial to getting entangles and to the rest of my build. With the warpcleft, you will tear through creeps.
After that, get items to increase your hero survivability. I like to get a bolstering armband. You can also get bracers if needed. The bolstering armband comes in handy later to make a brutalizer (basher).
Next up, boots. Get whichever set is your favorite. Steamboots and plated greaves are good because of the extra survivability. Ghost marchers help you kill. Which boots I buy depends on my mood and how the game is going.
Now, finish that brutalizer and put it on your bear. And when you finish that brutalizer, build another for your hero. Sometime around here you can also get ghost marchers for the bear. At this point, you can 1 v 1 any hero. You just took permabashing to a whole new level. Once you attack someone, they are lucky to move 5 steps before they die. I love killing scout before he can even use his invis.
At this point, if the game isnt over, pick whichever luxury item your like. Heart, wingbow, abyssal, and puzzlebox are all good choices. I like the get abyssal if there are other melee DPS heroes on my team that will benefit from it.
Probably the only build you will see that doesnt mention a mock or frostburn.
Drasha

i should have written a section about the brutalizer build and why it is not effective. Will get some thing up about it soon.
Tried this build out in a game just then, 13-1-17, managed to farm Mock, Enhanced Marchers and Charged Hammer all within 30 minutes (not EM)
One thing I definately liked is the Mock as first item, I have always gone marchers/marchers/Ehanced Marchers before Mock which has slowed me down a LOT.
I'm not too sure on the Warpcleft though, I prefer to go 2 gloves of the swift straight after mock as it's easier to farm and a lot cheaper, then I can just leave them on Booboo for the rest of the game and not worry about swapping over.
Also, you say in your guide that entangle is an attack modifier yet you also say that Thunderclaw is viable for Beardulon, what is the reasoning behind this? as I feel a lot of the item is lost without the lightning, I still think Thunderclaw is a good item but only for Wildsoul.
All in all though, great guide it helped me out quite a bit, glad to see some fellow Wildsoul players :D

entangle stacks with lightning. entangle does not stack with any of the slow items or shield breaker.

my main problem is with the leish range. I mean u can still let the bear run with low health opponents if u have mock, but he doesnt automatically do that. U have to keep clicking and if u towerdive and decide to send booboo alone, ur char will stand still at some place and sometimes die when im watching booboo follow (but unable to attack) a runner and see him die to mock. Then suddenly the bear dies :P
Nice guide. Tnx for the tip on mock, i always tend to build the boots first. This is history.

Hi,
thanks for the replay.
I have some questions :
1. At Minute 1, did you try to creepstack ?
2. When I see it right, you normally attack the strongest units first. Is this easier/faster then killing the small ones first ?
3. At Minute 5/6 you creepstack again, but isn't this a bad idea when heaving no area of effect demage and getting much more demage on Barboulon ?
4. Do you have an Itemidea for a more noobish/dying play ? I mean with items at small cost steps ?
Best regards

1. i like to stack the easy creep camp at the start does not take much to kill them and a double stack will get you to level 2. I can of botched it but o well.
2. i take out the stronger creeps because a shield block on the weaker ones can negate the whole attack but a shield block on the stronger ones still has 40 or more damage hit booboo. the kill order does not really increase speed just effects the amount of damage done to you.
3. when you hit level 5 you get tangle claw and can kill creeps much faster so double pulling is ok every once in a while as long as you don't push booboos health to much
4. you can go with a frost burn for wildsoul and warpcleft for booboo simpler items but you won't hit the critical mass where you just plow down the enemy team like i was able to with mock.
devin
01-18-2010, 05:45 PM
Farm the warpcleft for the bear as your first item, then you go ghost marchers on the bear and steamboots on yourself, the next item will be frostburn which you put on yourself.
If the game is still going on, go wingbow on yourself and then whatever you like. Its kinda situational. Behemoths heart, savage mace - anything that gives you sick damage or survivability is good.
The warpcleft early helps you farm a lot faster, and makes it hell of a lot easier to proc entangle on enemies, which sets up a kill for you. Frostburn is nice with the movespeed and all the extra stats you get with it. And any damage or survivability makes you win the game.
Haven't actually tried the mock-build, but seems kinda strange, because you'll have to proc entangle a couple of times early in the game to take someone down, and with no boots or anything to boost your speed you can't catch up with no-one. And if that wasn't enough, you entangle won't proc as much as it would with a warpcleft on the bear.
Match ID: 22251414
- Dont really show anything amazing. Actually second game with him, but starting to like him a lot.
Just an example on how you actually can win 3on5 with a Wildsould and hopefully i did something wrong.

Drasha
01-18-2010, 06:19 PM
at level 5 you should have upgraded booboo so you could get tangle claw procs while farming worth more then the +10 damage. At 7 i would have upgraded the passive damage over booboo since the last point helps you push and team fight more then it does farm. at 9 wild would have helped you more then bear form if you need it early get it at 10 and 11 for max effect.
at the 16 minute mark when you take down the first tower you should have shifted into bear form to give your team the +20 damage buff then shift back into ranged form. around 25 minutes when your team was using the forest you could have shifted over to the legion forest and farmed decently just have a portal key early on you can out run any hero and booboo can take them out if you can't. You don't really keep wild up on your self at all times and that cost you a couple kills you will never have mana problems so when ever the buff comes of cast it.
You probably farmed to much that game you could have pressed your advantage much early and won most likely. Your build was also fine for how long the game lasted what you did is more of a late late game farm super items build. Mock is more of a 30 minute game end it before you need more items. Also you never upgraded the warpcleft if you don't think you will in a game get 4 gloves of the swift instead.
watching a game in 8x speed and looking for details gives you a splitting head ache.

For people asking questions about controls and tips for moving Wild and Bear, I personally like to use Ctrl + 1 bind for Wildsoul, Ctrl + 2 for Bear, and Ctrl + 3 for Wild and Bear. I like this better than tabbing between, becasue sometimes I like to issue commands to both at the same time and tapping 3 then clicking seems easier than dragging over both to select.

Just used this guide to great success in an AP game. Thanks, drasha. Only problem I had was corpses blocking spawns, but that was something I personally just need to pay more attention to.
Randomed wildsoul, and the 200g was used for a set of wards, which, frankly, should be more or less core on Wildsoul earlygame, since they saved me from 2-3 (eventually) failed ganks, and actually net me 2 early kills, which made sure I had mock by 19 min, including 1 set of marchers for BooBoo.
Thanks for the guide Drasha, keep it up!

jungling is such a core thing on a lot of heroes and there are so many little things you can do to max out your farm that i probably need to talk the subject in another article in greater depth. wards can be a wonderful investment early on but hopefully you can get an int hero to buy them if not buying them can save your ass if the other team remembers you even exist. Will toss in some defensive ward spots.

Yeah, well, it was a 1550+ pub, so I didn't really expect anyone to buy wards, and since I randomed, figured it would be wise to buy them myself. As I know from experience that being ganked once or twice can severely hurt your game.

Yeah, I started off with a single health potion in other items on Wildsoul, and the hatchet+shield on BooBoo(Didn't read all of it yet), and it didn't hinder me at all, which was great.
Oh, btw, you might want to add the 'advanced' Vagabond camps(with the Vagabond Leader) to the list of camps you don't want to tackle untill level 5. The leader hits pretty hard on BooBoo before that, and it nearly killed him.

It's totally possible in jungle, my enemies warded up my jungle and constantly ganked me and i still made the 25 min mock. Just a word of advice. Boots early game on wildsoul is good if you get ganked. Boots aren't really all too important on Beardulon IMO.

Great Guide! I love how it's detailed with jungling and the advice you give is short and sensible.
Recently, I've given Wildsoul a few tries. Each time I found that I really didn't have a good idea of which items I should be getting after a mock. Generally, I would jungle until I got a mock. After the mock, I'd usually get a set of steamboots or Ghost marchers for wildsoul, and some regular marchers for booboo. After this, I usually ran out of ideas on what to do next. I tried to save up for frostburn/wingbow on wildsoul, but I kinda felt weak due to the only items on wildsoul being his boots and whatever components I had for my luxuries. Is this normal, should booboo have more equips and wildsoul with less? Or can you suggest some mid priced items that I could farm between a mock and a luxury for either Wildsoul or booboo?
Drasha
02-08-2010, 11:38 AM
i would go with mock -> 4 gloves of the swift on booboo and a pair of marchers then work on wildsouls items. I like to win once i get the mock but that does not always happen if you are staying in mostly ranged forum because of the speed problem then frostburn is a good choice for the speed letting you sit in melee forum and still run fast with a big health pool. Wingbow is if you are having problems with the other team trying to focus you down the evasion helps a lot.
after mock the item build normally feels a little wishy washy but thats fine because mock could be your only item and in most cases you can win the game with just it. I don't life investing to much into booboo since later in the game he dies fast and if you spent all your gold on him instead of getting items geared towards wildsoul you find your self pretty useless. Find the balance between the two that fits your play style.
rift shards are a decent mid range cost item that you can upgrade slowly and the gloves of the swift are a great cheap item for booboo.

I got wildsoul from a random in my last game, and my item order was
Wild: marchers -> whispering helm -> ghost marchers -> frostburn -> thunderclaw -> building shieldbreaker and game ended
Bear gloves x3 -> Abyssal Skull
Now, I'd never played Wild before, and I'm not a fan of playing with multiple units, prefer to just stick with hero and that's it. That said, I wasn't really sure what to put on bear itemwise, so I just stuck with atk speed and a lifesteal aura, since that stacks with pure lifesteal item (helm). I went 11/6/7, and used Bear Form almost constantly since the stacked atk speed and Wild ability, plus Bear Form bonus, kept me near invulnerable with the 2x lifesteal. Bear was pretty weak, but that's as expected. Early game I got lucky (ish) when my lane partner quit, but i managed to hold lane decently until mid game, and I ended up starting frostburn when it came that time. Late game I turned to playing him as a ganker and pushed undefended towers when possible. We ended up losing though :(
Is there anything I could/should have done differently to come out better?
Also, what are thoughts about using Post Haste instead of steam/ghost and having Bear return upon arrival? With Wild and Frostburns ms bonus, I was around ~490 move speed, and activating ghost marchers was almost unnoticable.
EDIT: shield breaker, not savage mace XD

i wouldn't get the skull on the bear you don't really need any thing it gives you. i would have gotten a 4th glove and just normal boots on booboo. don't build frostburn and shieldbreaker they don't stack and i doubt you were rotating them between each attack. as for boots most of the time i play wildsoul with out them but you can't really make a wrong choice with them. post haste are ok but not that great you can run anywhere you need to be so fast the port become while still useful not as wonderful as it is on slower heroes.

hmm maybe it was savage mace and not shieldbreaker, then.
So 4x gloves and marcher for bear, not worth getting its own lifesteal? Seems to me that it would help its survivability a lot. Plus with Abyssal skull it gave lifesteal to teammates since bear was in almost every fight.

Beardulon has too much health to be able to heal it efficiently with lifesteal. You'd better put armor items instead for survivability. Or better yet boost its attack.

I really appreciate the guide. It is written very comprehensibly.
After watching the replay though, I am very disappointed. And have my doubts in the item build too.
Here are the problems I have with the replay:
Not great farming. Most of the time creep pulling isn't done well etc.
Not really good unit control. After watching a replay with Chu` as Wildsoul this does not even compare.
The team had already won without Wildsoul. He really came into play after 20th min. The other team had a AFK at 25th min.
The other team didn't even try to gank Wildsoul. Any jungler left for 20-25mins alone will do very well.

I'm really disappointed you did not take the time to recommend other item builds. mock is not the be all and end all for wildsoul!

Instead of just criticizing, let me give some suggestions from watching several replays of 1900+ players.
1. Mock of Brilliance is really a great starting item. It is not realistic though that you can farm it uninterrupted in 25 mins. If you can, your team had won without you anyways.
2. If you are going for the Mock buy Sword of the High (3800gold) immediately when you have the money. You get the damage, but will need the recipe for the aura.
3. Best items on Beardulon are Gloves of the Swift for Attack Speed and Punchdaggers for Damage.
4. Cool things you can build out of gloves and daggers: 2 Gloves + Recipe = Alchemist bones. You keep it on Beardulon (for the +30 damage) and switch to Wildsoul when you need to use it. 2 Daggers + Marchers = Phaseboots. Really great for chasing enemies. You can switch them between Beardulon and Wilsoul often.
5. Buying things before Mock is smart. This way you increase your GPM and are not delaying it too much. And it also makes you a very useful hero before the game is actually over :)
Two notable replays:
#23855180 - Wildsoul played by Chu. The build is quite weird, he said he is experimenting. Watch it for the style of play, not the build. He used Beardulon as a tank for his jungling, but actually rushed a carry build on Wildsoul.
#23018492 - Played by Fpigs (PSR1900+). This is a more standard build. The guy takes part in battles and buys lots of things before the Mock - Phaseboots, Alchemist bones, teleports and yet manages to farm the Mock at the 28min mark. Much more recommended replay than the one given above.

the replays are not the greatest games ever but o well wildsoul is a pub hero any ways.
wildsoul really does not need to get any build up items before mock other then hatch + shield on booboo you can play him fine with out boots and its possible to get a mock in 18-20 minutes the 25 estimate is just for less experienced players.
boots have never felt like they were worth the delay on mock wildsoul and booboo already have massive ms and can out run some heroes who have boots even if you never got them.

Both replays stated above are weird, and the second one is wrong numbers I think.
Drasha,do you maybe have a good replay showing how to farm a 18-20 minutes mock? I could use some help jungling.
Thanks in advance.

i don't have a replay of it since replays come out and its harder to do in the jungle. The fastest way to get a mock is to solo mid and get all of the last hits.

I'll try to.Why is it harder to jungle? If it is,is it still effective to get a mock? I'm so anxious to try building frostburn/charged hammer/wingbow or sth like that.

its not that its harder to jungle there is just more possible gold in a lane then their is in the jungle at lower levels.
building some thing other than mock can work but you have to build into a late game carry and wildsoul is a bit lacking in the late game department compared to some other heroes.

I am not sure where the second replay number came from :) The actual one is quite different.
The game is #23018492. It is more standard build.
The thing is that against any competent player you will be harassed all the time in the jungle, and it becomes impossible to farm a 5K item. Especially since Wildsoul seem to be a slow jungler in the beginning.
This compared to Tempest - it usually takes him 7-8mins of good jungling to get his core item Portal Key, or if harassed - not much more.
If you get ganked 2-3 times with Wildsoul it might be well into the 30-40mins to get the Mock. That is why it often makes sense to buy something to be viable earlier.

Thanks for the guide, I used it and ended up winning the game for us. I spent most of the game farming and, even after we'd been raxxed in mid, came out and annihilated their Swiftblade and Soulstealer carries and mega creeped them. They couldn't even get me below half hp in the end.
The problems I faced were the time it took me to farm all that stuff so I could carry, a KSing Thunderbringer and that Mock seems pretty lack-lustre in general. It only helped me push lanes really, and that didn't even matter towards the end because I had so much damage and attack speed.

In my opinion, start with standard jungling gear (shield and hatchet on Beardulon) then get Marchers for both Wildsoul and Beardulon then hit up some Gloves of Haste for Beardulon.
Start farming at this point, ON LANE with some jungling when you can/are swapping lanes. If you can get a Mock by the twenty-five minute mark you're set for some easy kills. If, however, you're not farming to well, or have been interrupted, start up an Icebrand and then go onto a Frostwolf Skull/Enhanced Marchers.
Remember, Frostwolf Skull is always better then Frostburn.

wildsouls onna my fav heros. booboo for life lol. ive had games where my team is loosing and i am still killing enemies at our shrine lol. for me, i use booboo for the forest then after just for proc. if i have to take on the team, i will go lighting first, but if my team can crowd control well, i go single target dps. i wanna try ur moc thing tho. interesting :D. good guide. most pple are scared of controling 2 guys. it pays off so well.
^^ dont forget, if ur havin trouble farming, other team is probably semi buffed. does that give enough dps?

The Mock is amazing because of Beardulon's Entangling Claws.
But part of playing Wildsoul is picking the right items to build depending on the opposing teams, as well as how you're allies are playing.
Personal favourite overkill build is Mock of Brilliance, Daemonic Breastplate, Charged Hammer and Frostwolf Skull. Of course, if you can build that, you were going to win since the Daemonic Breastplate.
But still, it's fun to storm into the enemy base in Bear Form and alone, only to watch them try and gank you and all die due to a combination of Charged Up, the Mock and negative armor from the Breastplate.

I see what you mean about killing being better than disable, but with the gold to mock, instead i get basher boots, and bear boots. Then i go geo, frostburn. then i try for savage on both bear and wild. games usually over before then (other team concedes, or is destroyed), but butterfly is next.

Putting Axe on Wildsoul in the start provides faster farming, since he does higher damage than BooBoo by alot in the start.
just a tip ;o)

Drasha, I think I maybe have a good replay for you:
37072087 (http://replays.heroesofnewerth.com/match_replay.php?mid=37072087)
This could look like a proper Wildsoul match I think.

Hatchet on melee: 36% bonus
Hatchet on ranged: 12% bonus
this is why you never see hatchet on ranged carries.

After been reading most of the wildsoul guides on the forum these past couple of days i have two items in mind that probobly would help him out alot, i haven't tried these but in theory they should help.
1. Since he will spend so much time early game in the jungle wouldn't Alchemist's bones be nice? Since you get 3x the money from the creeps and 30 attack speed.
2. Using Whispering helm to dominate a minotaur for his 15 attack speed aura + stun and the wolf commander for his 30% damage aura. Plus that the stats from Whispering helm is realy nice.
Sorry i haven't tried these items out but often when I want to learn a new hero i read alot about him first.
