Advanced Console Use

This is my first ever guide and English is not my primary language so my grammar is not the best.

Table of Contents:

The Console
Customizing the Console
Practice Mode
Taking Screenshots

The Console:
Back to table of contents

The Console is a powerful tool that can handle nearly everything in HoN, in practice mode it can also change some server settings, for example max movement speed, hp per strength and things like that.
It can also change some graphical things, and disconnect you, repick your hero. Nearly Everything you can click on can be done in the console.
You can open the console with CTRL+F8

ALL COMMANDS IN THIS GUIDE IS WRITTEN LIKE THIS: '<command>' AND YOU SHALL NOT ENTER THE ' IN THE CONSOLE.
LOOK FOR PINK TEXT FOR THE DEFAULT VALUE.

Customizing The Console:
Back to table of contents

The console is plain black with different color on the text within, red for errors for example.

Image: http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/9725/thenormalconsole.th.jpg (http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/9725/thenormalconsole.jpg)
(click for 1680x1050 image)
But you may want to see what's behind the console, and that can be easily done with some commands.
You can change the percentage of space the console takes on the screen, and you can also make it more transparent.
This can be done with two console commands.

Change the height of the Console:

For choosing the height of the console you can use the command 'con_height XX'
XX stand for a number 0.0-1.0.
The default number is of course 1.0 because the console is over the whole screen. Now try that out.
Press CTRL+F8 and enter 'con_height 0.3' and you will see the difference directly.
Default is 'con_height 1'.

Image: http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/3359/consolewith03height.th.jpg (http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/3359/consolewith03height.jpg)
(click for 1680x1050 image)

See. You can see what's happening underneath the console and you can see tempest chillin' there in the base. :)

Change the transparency of the Console:

Next command is the command that changes the transparency of the console. Because sometimes you would like to see what's happening under the console, of course you can use the 'con_height' command but then you'll have a blind spot on the top edge of the screen. Therefor i will show you the 'con_alpha' command.
It can be used with or without the "con_height" command but combined they are really cool. :)
The 'con_alpha' command works exactly as the 'con_height' command.
You'll need to write 'con_alpha XX' and again XX is for a number between 0.0-1.0. The Default are 1 and it's no transparency at all, and 0 is complete transparency. Image 1 is 0.5 transparency and normal height, and Image 2 is 0.5 transparency and 0.3 height.
Default is 'con_alpha 1'.

Image1: http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/228/consolewith05transparen.th.jpg (http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/228/consolewith05transparen.jpg)
(click for 1680x1050 image)
Image2: http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/228/consolewith05transparen.th.jpg (http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/228/consolewith05transparen.jpg)
(click for 1680x1050 image)

Now you'll see what's happening on the screen, but you'll not be able to click on something except if you have minimized the console.

Changing the '>' that's before each line.

There is also a command for changing that, you can change it easily with this. Just enter 'con_prompt <symbol/word>' and replace the <symbol/word> part with symbol/word you want. :D
Default is 'con_prompt >'

Practice Mode:
Back to table of contents

There are many commands, as i mentioned before that only can be entered into the console in practice mode.
For example server settings.
First of is some hero changing commands.
The numbers are the default numbers.

hero_armorPerAgi 0.1400
hero_attackSpeedPerAgi 0.0100
hero_buyBackCost 150
hero_buyBackCostPerLevel 05
hero_goldBounty 200
hero_goldBountyFirstBlood 200
hero_goldBountyPerLevel 5
hero_goldBountyPerStreak 50
hero_hpPerStr 19.0000
hero_hpRegenPerStr 0.0500
hero_mpPerInt 13.0000
hero_mpRegenPerInt 0.0400
hero_respawnTimePerLevel 4000 (time is in ms, so this is 4s)
g_unitStealthFadeAmount 0.5000
g_unitMoveSpeedMax 522.0000
g_unitMoveSpeedMin 100.0000

I think you can guess what they are doing.

Next thing i would like to show you is some camera commands.
And again, the numbers are the default numbers.

cam_distanceStep 80.0000
g_camDistanceMax 1650.0000
g_camDistanceMin 600.0000

You can also use the FreeCam Button, check the settings for changing it.
Default button is BACK_SLASH. Hold that button and move your mouse and you will see. These things are perfect for all those movie-makers out there.

Changing your name:

Before you join/host the practice game enter these commands in the console:

'net_name <the new name>'

replace <the new name> with the name you want.

after that enter 'logout' and you will logout from the chat server.
You can't whisper any friends or something like that, and they will see you as offline. Then just join/host the practice game and see, you'll have the name you entered. :)
Default is 'net_name UnnamedNewbie'

Speed Start:

This was written by Idejder in another thread.

Try just running this

"X:\xxx\Heroes of Newerth\hon.exe" -autoexec "exec scripts/speed.cfg" -dev

See what happens. ;)

Also, please tell me you set this already a long time ago:
SetSave host_dynamicResReload "true"

This is what it does.

This is what the speed script does.

Set cg_menuTransitions "false"
Set sv_gameStartCountdown "0"
Set sv_gameCountdownLength "0"
Set _game_option_devheroes "devheroes:true"

It disables Menu Transitions, removes Game Start Countdown and Hero Select Countdown,
and it also enables Dev heroes.

Changing Game Speed:

Changing game speed is very cool because the effects in HoN are so great. :D
The Command you must use is 'host_timeScale XX.XX'
And the XX.XX are numbers, the default number is 1.
The maximum value is 100 and the minimum value is 0.1.
Example 'host_timeScale 1.55'
Default is 'host_timescale 1'

Taking Screenshots:
Back to table of contents

Everyone should know that you can take screenshots in HoN, and i've discovered a way to take screenshots in any format you want and you can also change the quality of the image.

The first command if to change the format.
Enter 'host_screenshotFormat <format>'
Replace <format> with the image format you want. for example png, tga etc.
Default is 'host_screenshotformat jpg'

Now onto the next one, to change the quality of the screenshots.
You'll need to enter 'host_screenshotQuality <1-100>'
Replace <1-100> with a number between 1 and 100.
Default is 'host_screenshotQuality 90'

Graphics:
Back to table of contents

There are some commands that changes the graphics.
Two of them are.

'gfx_textures 1/0' will replace all textures on units and some other stuff to white funky looking textures.
1 = on
0 = off

'gfx_wireframe 1/0' will like it says add wireframes. :D
1 = on
0 = off

These two are included in my mod Enhanced Test Window, but they can be used outside practice mode.
Here is a video showing off Enhanced Test Window.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWK3EQoB4Kw
(Bad Quality, i know that, but you can see what it does.)

The next command adds a window with some stats of the selected unit.
Enter 'cg_drawSelectedStats true' to enable it and 'cg_drawSelectedStats false' to disable it.
Image: http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/2486/cgdrawselectedstats.th.jpg (http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/2486/cgdrawselectedstats.jpg)

This command shows the path were the unit that you're controlling will move.
Enter 'cg_drawSelectedPath true' to enable it and 'cg_drawSelectedPath false' to disable it.
Image:http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/1387/cgdrawselectedpath.th.jpg (http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/1387/cgdrawselectedpath.jpg)

This command will show the names of all objects in the world of newerth.
Enter 'cg_drawEntityTypeNames true' to snable it and 'cg_drawEntityTypeNames false' to disable it.

Image: http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/4554/cgdrawentitytypenames.th.jpg (http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/4554/cgdrawentitytypenames.jpg)

Additional Commands:

There are also alot of more commands that could be useful/fun to use.

Showing FPS (Frames Per Second):

You'll need to use this.
Enter 'host_drawFPS 1' to enable it and 'host_drawFPS 0' to disable it.

MORE WILL BE COMING SOON!

Your links are broken. In the end of each link, it will open it up with a slash "/" - which will cause a 404 error on the website.

I'm not sure if this is for everyone, but it is bugged for me. Just remove the slash in the end, then it will show the image.

Once I get the chance, I'll try to proofread your guide. I really think this is a pretty useful guide.

I'm no expert but I would believe that in order to change it in game it would need to reload/load the texture like you can do from the console, but from a different (specified) file. Maybe a modification (by S2?) could be done so that you could specify a reload command to a specific resource file. Basically wipe the texture from memory and replace it with the one you want.

How do you reload a texture in the console? Is it possible to have it reload from a new s2z file? I would like the ability to switch texture mods without restarting if possible.

Not possible at the moment.

Sephinator

There is some commands.
Reloadinterfaces
Reloadtextures
Reloadmodels

Maybe the texture one works. Test it you. I'm at school so.

None helped. I noticed that Reloadtextures messed with my view on the map. I got to see the hellbournes lanes while I was on Legion. However I could'nt see the units move through it only until they came into range with my creeps and before them was darkness.

My model did'nt change texture either. I had added a new s2z file with a higher number to try replace it but no luck. Perhaps it did'nt even load and just reloaded what was there when hon started up.

Reloadmodels killed animations for the creeps they just moved around like statues :S There was also alot of errors in the console about loading resources. Ah well...would have been nice if it worked.

MaxGhost
12-14-2009, 04:43 PM
Try doing it by making a regular folder called heroes in you game folder, and keep the same file structure to your texture. If you work with that one and reload, it might work. I just want a reloadeffects command.

What does the speed start do? I want to know before I eff up hon.

It won't eff up HoN because this is what you do:

Go to Start Menu > Run

In that prompt box, type "C:\Program Files\Heroes of Newerth\hon.exe" -autoexec "exec scripts/speed.cfg" -dev

Then click Run.

What does this do, you may ask? Well, what this does is load HoN up, and the S2Games logo appears to not stay around for as long (not entirely sure), but when the actual screen comes up, you don't have to wait for all the options to become available, you instantly get logged into the game, without having to click "Log In" or wait for the Auto Log-in. It's actually quite useful, thanks Ididgeridoo (Idejder), this is quite useful. I'm going to create a Shortcut with the Icon of HoN using this command :D

Okay, just to elaborate for people, (Maybe Seph could add this to the guide,)

On your Desktop, right click and select the option Shortcut, or Create Shortcut. When it asks for the location, type "C:\Program Files\Heroes of Newerth\hon.exe" -autoexec "exec scripts/speed.cfg" -dev

It will ask you what to call it. Simply type Heroes of Newerth or HoN

Then when you load HoN, you'll instantly be logged in. You save about 5 seconds or so. You can also delete the old Shortcut to Heroes of Newerth, but you can still choose to load slowly or fast.

I know that the interface is 88h high.

MaxGhost
12-19-2009, 11:02 AM
how high is a "h"? 12pixels? how does that work

h is basically a percentage value for the screen. It's used so the interface can scale with all the resolutions. The height of the interface is 100h in total, but in the game, the actual game interface is 88h tall because there's a 12h high black bar at the bottom of the screen which isnt game space, because the interface covers that area. Mods like TinyUI and MiniUI make the game interface bigger (100h) so there's no black space cause their mods don't cover that area completely.

grohn
12-19-2009, 11:26 AM
how high is a "h"? 12pixels? how does that work
1 "h" is 1% of the screen height.
1 "w" is 1% of the screen width.

MaxGhost
12-19-2009, 11:39 AM
1 "h" is 1% of the screen height.
1 "w" is 1% of the screen width.

Then why do I see h used for widths too? O_o
S2 chose to base the size of the interface only on the height of the screen.
I'll illustrate with the following pictures:
1680x1050
http://i50.tinypic.com/mmplll.jpg
1400x1050
http://i49.tinypic.com/2vkeu6h.jpg
Notice how all the interface items are the same size, because the vertical height is the same. They are simply spread out more in the first one. If S2 used "w" instead, the ratio of width to height for the objects would change based upon the ratio of the screen. The objects would be stretched on widescreen monitors, rather than spread out. Stretched images look ugly.

I only mentioned "w" for reference. It never actually appears in S2's code, but it can be used nonetheless, if future mods require it.

So, if the interface is 1050 high, an object with height="10h" and width="20h" would be 105 pixels high and 210 pixels wide.

I found this command and I think its pretty usefull for modders or at least it is really usefull for me.

StartGame "practice" "Game Name" "map:caldavar allheroes:true"

You can type this in the console right from the main menu so you don't have to login to test your stuff and its really faster (I start the game, open the console, arrow up and enter).

you can add more option to the game launch but those are the one I use. Its really useful when the servers are down, you can still play practice game for the fun or to test.

Is there a way to see the amount (and type maybe) of arguments for each function?

I'm trying to remove a part in the middle of a string using substring, stringlength, searchstring and stripchar. It's really time consuming if you don't even know if you're using the functions correctly and get strange errors all the time.

I'm not interested in spawning heroes dynamically in a practice game via dev commands. I am interested in the command that will allow me to choose a hero from the hero selection screen in a real game via console commands.

Edit: I found the file, however no if i delete it or remove all its content, it ends up restoring itself, i still got the same problem...

change it without hon running ... hon saves that file upon exit
find
SetSave "con_height" "-3.0000" (if you are saying you set it to -3)
and change it to your liking

ehh maxghost where does this type of stuff belong? i figured this was the place to discuss / ask questions about console use

MaxGhost

Well, visual based things are in the options menu. No need to use the console for that. Just turn down whatever you want and your game should run faster.

i think you misunderstood what i was asking. im talkin about stuff like turning off the details on the trees, or things like that. making the game down to the minimums via console ( but more than that weird white one, or the wireframe thing XD i still like the hero / spell details, and the creeps too

You can't make the models any worse than you can with the game options. You would have to make a super low version for those models and textures manually. Kind-of a hassle.

Otherwise, ask in the Tech Support forum, they might be able to help.

Two questions:

Does anyone know the command for removing trees?

Does anyone know the command for the positioning of the camera?

Can I rebind the "call overlay button" (F6) by using the console (since you can't find the command in options)? And if so what would I have to write to rebind it to, let's say + on the numpad?

Does anyone have a list of the console values that correspond with the different keys? Specifically to change this:

You can change the cvar chat_gameLobbyChatToggle from 274 to another value corresponding to the key you want to work with. It's not a normal bind key, the way we do the toggle is different in case you are wondering why it's not on the options menu.

BindImpulse ui <button> ToggleLobby

I've tried it now and nothing seems to happen. Tried to write it in the console at the menu screen and in-game. Am I supposed to get a message from the console when a command works?

I wrote this: "BindImpulse ui + ToggleLobby".
Is it because some keys cannot be used to rebind, or do every key have a code?

BindImpulse ui ADD ToggleLobby (numpad plus)
BindImpulse ui = ToggleLobby (+ next to backspace, it's really =)

Many symbols use a different name when binding. For a complete list, enter "ButtonList"

Hello i'm looking for command that enables you to enter a password (on order to enter a password protected channel). Because when i'm trying to enter a channel with password it just says "The channel xxx requires a password" but doesnt show , where or how to insert the password.

on the subject of channel passwords... my friends and I have tried to set up a clan channel, but we can't figure out how to maintain admin status. Must someone stay in the channel for these settings to be preserved?

Can I change values of heroes via console in realtime in practise mode.
For example in UT3 if I wanted to increase the speed at which you move without having to spend a few minutes writing a mutator first;

I would type this into the console:
set utgame.utpawn GroundSpeed 440.0

Was wondering if you could do something similiar with HoN.

Lets say I want to increase Chipper's movespeed from 295 to 522, if possible how would one change that via console.

I doubt there is a way to do it via the console, you could try to create a new item like behemoth's heart that would reduce the cooldown by 100%.

is it possible to make the right button click do:
1)target unit (left mouse click)
2)attack unit (a+left click or somewhat)

the key idea is the unit must be targeted

or are there any kinds of macro managers for hon?

well... i would to see the area of fog. kinda when you plaint a ward and you cant see rune or you cant view somewhere in the map because tree or cliffs are near of the ward/you.

"This command shows the path were the unit that you're controlling will move.
Enter 'cg_drawSelectedPath true' to enable it and 'cg_drawSelectedPath false' to disable it."

something kinda this part of the post, but to show fog

How do I enable so that I can watch everyones GMP during a game? I've also seen vids of being able to see what items the enemies got? Maybe I saw video of some cheat I don't know but I looked like a consol-thingy.

I'd appriciate any help about this, it seems very useful, if its legal ofc.
