Guide to installing the honmod manager for macs:
This guide will assume you have some prior knowledge of computers, as some of it can be kind of tricky. However, with help, it?s really not as hard as it seems.
First off, you need to download the mono framework and install it
1. Go to the link provided on this page: link (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=25883)
It says it under installation and usage. A direct link to the site is here: mono (http://www.go-mono.com/mono-downloads/download.html)
Then click on OSX and dl the client.
2. Install it by clicking on the .dmg yada yada yada.
3. Now this is the part that gets people. You first need to open up terminal under finder. Just search for terminal (I also suggest putting it into your dock because you need to use it EVERY TIME you want to install a new mod onto HON).
http://i49.tinypic.com/mha80m_th.png
Now open up terminal. It will have some login stuff in there. Type in "mono " with the space, and then drag the modman file into the terminal box (I also suggest putting the modman file on your desktop, as this is another thing you need to do every time you want to add another mod, ect.).
http://s6.tinypic.com/xmplk9_th.jpg (http://i50.tinypic.com/xmplk9.png)
It will then ask for the pathway to your HON app. Make sure it is in your applications folder. Hit cancel the first time, and then enter in /applications/heroes of newerth.app
http://s6.tinypic.com/2hwmaf7_th.jpg (http://i48.tinypic.com/2hwmaf7.png)
After that, the mod manager should come up, like so
http://i46.tinypic.com/11b80uq_th.jpg (http://i46.tinypic.com/11b80uq.png)
The first time it is done, it will take awhile, so just be patient.
4. Now go under finder->applications and right click or w/e your "heroes of newerth" app file, then select "show package contents"
http://i45.tinypic.com/wiwli_th.jpg (http://i45.tinypic.com/wiwli.png)
Now, you?ll see you have a "mods" folder in there. (Once again for simplicity I suggest you right click, hit "make alias", and move the alias to your desktop so you can just drag .honmod files right in there instead of going in the long way) Place any mods you want into the "mods" folder.
5. Go back to your modman and go under file->update all mods. Your list of mods will now be up. Enable the ones you want, and go file->apply all mods and start HON.

There you go, you just successfully conquered the modman installation for macs!
If there are any questions or problems, please post screens or code that you got, so I have an easier time figuring them out.

Hey, I made this as a guide because I believe the current one for installing on a mac is a bit lacking. If you want to use this, please do.
This is also in response to the large number of mac questions recieved recently, so read up and give feedback if possible.

Mh, only mistake being "Update All Mods" is referring to downloading new versions of the mods. What you'll really want to do is "View" -> "Refresh Mod Display" (F5); coincidentally updating mods automatically causes the refresh to happen first.
Anyway, thanks, I'll link this thread in the main mod manager thread.

Yes, i realized that too, although if you hit update all mods and you had the manager opened before you added a mod to the mods folder, it will refresh the display as well, and the new mod will come up anyways. I just figured it's killing two birds with one stone.

Ok..
A few problems for me when trying to apply this mod:
1. - .honmod appears as a folder not a file.
2. - When trying to edit the path /users/mark/heroes of newerth/ to /users/mark/heroes of newerth/game it crashes ModMan, the reason for trying to edit the path is the following reply in Terminal: "The file /Applications/Heroes of Newerth.app/game\mods does not exist."
3. - Applying mods doesn't work, only crashes the app.
4. - Applying another path crashes the app as well.
5. - Keep getting this error window in Terminal:
Sun Dec 13 15:34:04 Marks.local mono[1335] <Error>: kCGErrorCannotComplete: CGSDeviceGetGeometry: Invalid device window
Sun Dec 13 15:34:04 Marks.local mono[1335] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

Even though the only thing I am doing is starting up the app.
My setup is the MBP 13,3" - 2,53 - 4GB RAM - running Snow Leopard
Any reply would be great, since i'm colorblind and really want the colorblind mod to be a possibility..
Not sure my questions are regarded dumb, but I dont see any way of fixing this without asking so please bear with me Prial ;)

Ignore the fact that you might be able to open .honmods as folders (if so, you should be able to see a mod.xml and a few other files inside) and treat them as files.
The correct path to set usually is /applications/heroes of newerth.app, /users/mark/Heroes of Newerth just contains your game settings and the likes. Note that the /game at the end is not necessary (and modman should actually automatically strip it away).
3 & 4 are most likely caused by 2.

I'd just say follow the whole thing to the dot, and dont deviate from it at all... I'm kind of confused as to exactly what your problem on the modman is, since i never had any of these problems. Try to be more specific or something i guess.

The only thing i could think of that could be casing this is that you didnt install the mono framework correctly. Therefore your comp is giving you an error, saying the mono script can't be found basically.

probably the rune timer, since i have all the others and they work fine. It could also be that you're trying to apply two mods that have rune timers, as the Bard Ui already has it implemented.

Try typing in just "mono". If it gives you an error, then it's a problem with mono being installed.

Then I get general information about mono, so I guess that works. Maybe I didn't correctly remove mono when I reinstalled it. I removed the Mono.Framework folder in the library, is that correct? SOrry for the circumstances -.-'

looking at the mono support forums, it could be a problem with the version you're running. are you on snow leopard or leopard?

*sigh* you guys never give me enough information.
1. I will tell you i dont know the answers to a lot of the problems and they seem to be either on the mono end or on your mac's end, meaning there's nothing i can do.
2. Give me error reports if something does go wrong. look at terminal, and there should be some kind of code that will tell us wherein the problem lies.

There is a bug in the ModManager code that is probably pretty easy to fix in the source code.
The menu option: "Open Mod Folder" doesn't work in mac.
The reason for this appear to be fairly simple. Mono shoots out the error:
"The file /Applications/Games/Heroes of Newerth.app/game\mods does not exist."
Apple and linux systems use the forward slash (/) to separate directories not the backslash (\). I'm guessing the way Modman does this is $pathvariable + games\mods hard coded in.
Notausgang
01-06-2010, 11:07 PM
Yeah, I thought I was clever when replacing some Path.Join(GameDir, Path.Join("game", "mods")) with Path.Join(GameDir, "game\mods"), but that obviously terribly backfired; it'll be fixed in the next version.

Ohoy! While waiting for people to join me and my friends games (matchmaking, hoooooo!) I created an launcher for ModMan on OS X.
Features:
* It nags when you don't have mono installed.
* It nags when it can't find HoN_ModMan.exe on your computer.
* It uses Spotlight to find HoN_ModMan.exe, so you can store it where ever you like.
Download here (http://soy.se/code/hon_modman_launcher-1.0.zip)

alright, i looked at it a little more, there's absolutely no way it shouldn't be able to find my modman.
I may not be getting the error message because in the script, in the display message for when it doesnt find the honmodman, there is no second quotation mark on the display message, only a first one. Once again, i have no idea what programming language is, nor am i a programmer, but i think i've seen this happen before.

Found teh problem. In the terminal, the first thing it says is that it found the HON_modman. The next thing is all the options you get when you just type in mono into terminal.
What's happening is the app is finding the hon modman, but is not running it with mono correctly. It is just basically running "mono" not "mono Hon_modman.exe"

Those "Permission denied" errors doesnt matter in this case.
Maybe you aren't running the new version that I told you to download?

lol, i basically didnt use any of his code. If you want to do what i did, so you just click on the application icon and it loads, open up the file "source" and delete all of it. Then on the top line, type mono and drag your honmodman.exe to it like you would in terminal. save it then it will work lol.

Man life saver haha, I am a first time mac user and my school just gave me a new MBP. I have read through this entire thread and could not find a solution to my problem. I am able to open up mod man, but when entering the path manually I get this error in terminal "MacBook-Pro:~ ryanhaywood$ mono /Applications/Heroes\ of\ Newerth.app/game/Mods/HoN_ModMan.exe" and it will not register any mods in my mods folder. I'm assuming it's because of the slashes. Also, am I the only one who can not use shortcuts in game? ie cmd + v to paste a match id from the web, or alt tab out of the game. I tried to cmd+m / h to no avail. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance!
ShredderIV
01-15-2010, 07:32 PM
ummm idk about ur shortcuts...
but the problem is the slashes... U shudnt have the slashes in the middle of heroes of newerth, that's your only problem :D
FridaJorgen
01-15-2010, 07:38 PM
Yea, well when I drag honmod into terminal it creates the slashes and I am unable to edit the path after the fact. here is what it gives me MacBook-Pro:~ ryanhaywood$ mono /Applications/Heroes\ of\ Newerth.app/game/Mods/HoN_ModMan.exe. maybe ill just rename the app file. thanks for your speedy response though shredder
edit: doing this gave me the same situation, in honmod, but it isn't recognizing any mods. all i have in there are bard's ui. the folder name is mods in the game folder too and i reinstalled the universal version of mono. Also after i enter the path manually, i get this error in terminal repeated 20 times

alright...
Move your honmod to somewhere other than a folder in your app package, since i think the problem is that it can't open the package in order to get to the folder.
This should completely fix your problem, if it doesn't then tell me.

Hey thanks again, I moved honmod to the desktop and followed the procedures again normally. It didn't recognize the mods I had in the mods folder, so after I changed the path manually I proceeded to use the 'update mods' function. It shut down again and this is what it said in terminal

Hey thanks, I followed it to a T and it worked like a charm... except now when I try to use 'update mods' it doesn't crash but gives me a blank pop up window and a 'ding'. no error is reported in terminal. I checked to see if it was just the one mod that wasn't compatible by downloading some other mods but it still didn't recognize them. If it means anything, when I try to open the mods folder from honmod, the terminal address has a forward slash before 'mods'. Thanks for everyones help, I think I will live without mods till I get Win7 and dual boot for games I think. Thanks!

any ideas? I've made sure the folder was in the right spot. You have two problems there: the first one being it's using a backslash instead of a slash; you should upgrade to the newest mod manager version (1.2) which was released yesterday, which fixes this.
The second problem is caused by a missing implementation in the currently distributed Mono version. Sylvac has written a short guide on how to fix this here (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showpost.php?p=904303&postcount=826).

Great I got it working.
So I'm able to apply Mods fine. The only problem is it's not liking bardui.honmod
I even removed everything from the mods folder but this one and everytime I apply the mod manager crashes. I'd just skip it but it's the only ui mod I like.
EDIT: Thanks for all your help BTW :)

Think this is the same errors as others earlier stated think here was the solution
The second problem is caused by a missing implementation in the currently distributed Mono version. Sylvac has written a short guide on how to fix this here (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showpost.php?p=904303&postcount=826).

Hi Guys,
While I personally didn't have that particular problem when starting ModManager I did have a few issues. This may not help much but from all the instructions I've read s far, on OS X, you need to:
1. Insure that you have X11 enabled, I didn't have to do anything on my machine for this, but since you are unable to get a window showing it's possible that this is your problem. Not being an expert in this area all I can suggest is that you google for a way to do this.... sorry :(
2. Once the app starts you are likely to get further errors in the console, I did, all of these (for me at least) were already documented at the bottom of the guide linked to on the top of this page, for completeness here's the link again (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=25883). Just scroll to the bottom to the section "I'm using Mac and I get this error message in the terminal:"
I hope this helps.

I am hoping that someone can help me with my problem. I am successfully running the ModManager on my MBP BUT I am unable to see any mods. I have downloaded a few (5) but when I put them into the /application/Heroes of Newerth.app/game/mods folder they don't show up in the manager.
I thought that part of the problem was due to the files I've downloaded having a .zip extension added (I'm using Chrome) so the files end up like: banlist_assist.honmod.zip so I have tried removing the ".zip" extension but it made no difference, so far I've tried:
1. Using the files as they were (with the .zip at the end), no luck
2. Removing the .zip extension, same result
3. Uncompressing the files so that I get a subfolder named by the extension, eg. banlist_assist.honmod with the XML and image file inside. Same result
What am I doing wrong?!?!?
I realise that this is a hard thing to remotely debug, so can someone please post a direct link to a honmod that they know is working for them, as it has been suggested that I may be using mods that are not honmods and I want to remove that as a possibility. I really don't care what the mod is, once I know it's working I can start getting the ones I want/need.
Thanks in advance for your help.
PS. For completeness, I'm using the latest version of ModManager (1.2.2) and of course the latest version of the game (from memory 1.66.4).

lol, i basically didnt use any of his code. If you want to do what i did, so you just click on the application icon and it loads, open up the file "source" and delete all of it. Then on the top line, type mono and drag your honmodman.exe to it like you would in terminal. save it then it will work lol.
I don't understand this. I cant find the file "source' anyway in the package contents of the hon modman launcher, could you explain more in detail?

@Ebioni, oops.. i meant the file "script".
@snebla, I really have no idea why this might be happening. The only suggestion as of now that i can make is stop using chrome. The problem could be that chrome adds .zip to the end for some reason, or compresses all downloaded files or something.

:( I deleted everything in the script and put mono/Users/administrator/Desktop/HoN_ModMan.exe.
The launcher still isn't working. D: Any suggestions?

dont put "mono/" just put "mono " with the space and then type in the directory to your honmodman.exe.

Note to everyone using Chrome on a Mac, you can't download .honmod files with it, use Firefox or Safari and it will work with no problems.

hi i have a problem with the miniUI mod. it worked fine with the old version, but now that it needs the movableframes mod, it doesn't.
what i did: opened honmod manager with mono, there i had the 3 mods i'm interested in: fullgamenotifier, miniUI and movableframes. I activated fgn and mf, but when i try to activate miniUI hmm crashes. i thought i had first to activate mf to make miniUI working, so i first started hon with only those two mods on. then i run hmm again and activated miniUI, but still not working. the terminal error is this:

I'v good news for u guys :). I'v a friend that made a scrip to modman for mac... He will post it soon just testing with other MAC. But basically u just install mono, get honmod and scrip, drag mode to the scrip and it will open honmod automatic and paste the mode at proper folder and u just need to get mode active and press aplly mod at honmod. After that u just drag any modes that u want to scrip and press apply when honmod open's.

That doesn't depend on the version of OS X but if your filesystem is case sensitive or not.

Ok, I had a hunch and I tested it out.
I did the exact same thing but this time round I entered nothing into the address box and I got the same errors.
It seems that I have a problem with the input box and that the information doesn't carry over to the next window etc.
Hope this helps someone find me a solution......
edit : Been toying around with this.
Tried putting my hon install on my desktop so that I could browse to it using without using the input box (I'm hoping I can put it back to the apps folder after all this) and then got the same errors Sylvac got. Will try his solution and let you know how it goes.
Edit Again: Ok, so I tried what sylvac did, and I still couldn't use the input box to find hon, but if i navigated to the one the desktop, another window popped up, the windows ones with the icon, and a message and the 1-3 buttons and it says "Invalid Path. The path you have specified either does not point to a Heroes of Newerth install or is inaccessible by this machine"
...basically I fixed it, just so it could tell me that there was still something wrong.....oh well. hopes his helps though.

I'm having the exact same problem. I've tried Mono 2.6.1 and Mono 2.4.3, both give the same error.
After a little time at their IRC channel I got the hint that it might be a font problem. So I got the idea to run it using Instruments.app (DTrace) to see what files where being opened. I noticed that some stuff in my homedir was opened that was fontconfig related. I deleted those and everything was working again (might take a bit of time when you first run modman as those files get generated again).
TLDR: remove from your homedir .fontconfig and .font-cache (.font* in other words).

Btw, will the new patch affect how the modman has to apply mods for mac users?
Notausgang
03-30-2010, 08:08 PM
Well, .s2z mods need to be placed in a different spot, so the output directory for modman changes; to go in line with this "not editing game files/folders" the folder containing the .honmods is now also located in a different spot.
The game dir one has to set still is the same old one.

How about updating the guide with (most importantly) the new mod location, the fact that it won't prompt most mac users for the path now (if HoN was installed in the default location) and the use of the F5 button / "Refresh Mod Display" menu entry (instead of "update all mods")?

So... if I run ModMan without the sudo in terminal, it runs perfectly fine. Picks up the mod folder, is like hello here are your mods, applys them.... and then I get in game and only the mods that don't require the new version of ModMan actually work. Things like LastHitAssist or Right Click Deny - perfectly fine. BangUI or BigHeroGuide, no dice. Any thoughts?
And running with sudo just picks up nothing.
EDIT: Yeah, or it seems that anything I applied in the old version with the old directory scheme worked fine. Anything new is no dice
EDIT 2: Oh okay, fixed it. Had to move the resource file from the ~Application Support/Heroes of Newerth directory to the one in the actual game contents.

That would actually be the wrong way to do it. You probably still had the resources999.s2z file in the game folder that was overriding the new files. The modman output must be in your user hon-dir for it to work for future patches of HoN.

Haha, yep - I actually right after that went through and deleted the old one, just forgot to come back and edit the post.

Edit: Mentioned this at the modman general page: http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showpost.php?p=1193523&postcount=999
I'm not sure how you're supposed to remove those directories but I did it in terminal using rm -r ~/.fontconfig and rm -r ~/.font* and they would get removed but when I tried to run mono and all that jazz, I would get the same message the other two people were getting and the .fontconfig directory was back. I dun know what to do. =\

That the directory gets regenerated is fine, you needed to delete it as it had some unusable data in it. I'm not sure, but there might be other locations that are giving problems.
If you have the developer tools installed you could check with Instruments (GUI) or dtruss (command line).

By dev tools do you mean Xcode? if that's the case, how do I do it? I'm not all that computer savvy. =\

It said "no such file or directory found"
I made sure that HoN was in applications.... What am I doing wrong?
Just wanted to say thanks a bunch Shredder for your guide :D
Followed your instructions and it works flawlessly! <3 (with the exception of using a different directory; I have HoN installed somewhere else)
Also followed evl's instruction found on this page (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=25883#Download) to write an application launcher. Now installing new mods is a breeze :)

Hi im still suffering although i know this is a well written and proven mac install guide.
i have got as far as tying "mono " into terminal which is then meant to ask me too type in my pathway to hon app. in my case i have to press enter/return in order to get hon mod manager to open in dock i also then have to go to options and select Enter Hon Path Manually. i then cancel the first time and then retype /application/heroes of newerth.app when i press OK it brings up this msg in Terminal.
"Last login: Wed Jun 9 18:14:34 on ttys000
vc-41-10-211-210:~ will$ mono /Users/will/Desktop/HoN_ModMan.exe
Wed Jun 9 18:25:57 vc-41-10-211-210.umts.vodacom.co.za mono[866] <Error>: kCGErrorCannotComplete: CGSDeviceGetGeometry: Invalid device window
Wed Jun 9 18:25:57 vc-41-10-211-210.umts.vodacom.co.za mono[866] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
Once again am sorry to make my problems yours but have been trying for over a week to get this installed, but i just dont seem to be able to get things right. please any help would be greatly appreciated i really dont want to have to conform to windows, :) thanks.

i followed your steps perfectly! but the one thing that went wrong was during this step:
Now open up terminal. It will have some login stuff in there. Type in "mono " with the space, and then drag the modman file into the terminal box (I also suggest putting the modman file on your desktop, as this is another thing you need to do every time you want to add another mod, ect.).
After you place it on the terminal, you should press enter right? nothing will happen if you dont. you may think its dumb of me to type this but I just want to do everything perfectly.
THEN...
It will then ask for the pathway to your HON app. Make sure it is in your applications folder. Hit cancel the first time, and then enter in /applications/heroes of newerth.app
this does not happen. it does not ask me for the pathway to my HON app. this is where i think everything goes wrong.
I then try to manually add the location, however this error comes out:
Sat Jun 12 14:39:26 Aaron-Quis-MacBook-Pro.local mono[175] <Error>: kCGErrorCannotComplete: CGSDeviceGetGeometry: Invalid device window
Any ideas?

This is a problem with mono in a way.
I don't know how to get around it, but I usually just double click the mods to activate and deactivate them.
Sorry.

That means that mono isn't installed (properly), or that your PATH (terminal stuff) isn't set. Try using /usr/bin/mono, if that doesn't work either it's the install, otherwise it's your shell settings.

the manager never makes the "Mods" folder appear in HoN for me. I dunno why.
I uninstalled/reinstalled both Mono and ModMan, and did everything exactly as it says in the op three times. It goes fine until I get to the part where it says "Now Modman will ask you to enter the location of HoN." It never says that, it just finds applications/Heroes of Newerth.app automatically, but the "Mods" folder isn't there.

This happens when i try to run modman through modmanager launcher or a script. Also, tried to reinstall it the old fashioned way and get 'cannot execute binary file'.
Any help? - Note that the mods currently installed are still working.

I get the following The file /var/root/Library/Application Support/Heroes of Newerth/game/mods does not exist. it does exist but actually it is the wrong path I used the normal path for mac /Applications/Heroes of Newerth.app but no mod is shown so where is my fault.

I installed everything fine on a diffrent mac of mine, but with my MBpro i seem to get this error.
My Name-G5-3:desktop myname$ mono HoN_Modman.exe
** (HoN_Modman.exe:8115): WARNING **: mono_class_from_mono_type: implement me 0xb6
**
ERROR:class.c:5408:mono_class_from_mono_type: code should not be reached
Stacktrace:
Abort trap
I first assumed it was the mono framework so I ran their script for uninstalling downloaded the framework again and reinstalled. Same exact error so I download a new hon_modman.exe same problem.
I was going to the containing folder by using "cd downloads" then "mono Hon_modman.exe" so i tried dragging and dropping the file location to no avail.
I read through this thread and didn't see any solutions. So any suggestions would be appreciated. I can play without mods but some of them are being missed.

Hey Guys :) I have got this huge problem :/
i installed mon etc for my mod man but when i did this the first time it said "cannot execute binary file, so i decided to to follow one of the previous steps and double click on the icon of "Hon_Modman.exe" and clear all its contents and just type in "mono" so i did this and ran the program in terminal. Now i just get a whole bunch of options that do not relate to the program what so ever. Can Anyone help?
Thanx :)

Alternatively you can just download the Java ModManager. Much easier to use.

I installed ModMan on my mac a few months ago and loaded some mods, then I uninstalled HoN. But now that I've decided to play again I load up Modman and my mods still seem to be there, but i can't apply them and terminal says "segmentation fault".
Can someone tell me what that means and how to fix it?
I was trying to add a new mod and i cannot find the Mods file. I opened the package contents and when to game but it isnt there...
