If you'll note the event is up to 40 people. If we ran teams of 6 there wouldn't be enough teams to make it a worthwhile tournament. Hence we have chosen 3v3.
Also note that 3v3 is played in the euro scene.

I have to be honest most people are not down for bringing their computers to some place just to game.
As much as I find the idea of a HoN tourney 15 min drive from my house entertaining most people would just rather go to sbx and play there or something.
Not trying to be a killjoy but it's hard to make these byoc tourneys work unless its a big name like lanageddon or something (and still I have never attended that lol).

If you have not been to a LAN party, how can you constructively (or unconstructively) criticize it?
I've been attending LANs for over a decade now, and hosting them for about as long. While you may not yet enjoy such events there are plenty of people who do, and even more who take interest in them that have not yet attended them.
Why do people go to LANs? There are many reasons, most of which revolve around the social elements of the event. The number of people you can fit into SBX is limited, wheras a LAN party can be of any size. There are also advantages to bringing your own rig. There are those who share files (legally or illegally is not for debate here), those who show off their hard work building or modding systems; water cooled systems are not exactly a quick-setup affair.
There are also those who go for the actual gaming. Since you bring your own PC you can install whatever you want, and bring whatever spec system you want too. As such you have a tonne more flexibility in terms of how you want to enjoy your time at the event. You don't have a governing body preventing you from installing whatever game you want, and as such I know of many games I've never heard of before attending LAN parties.
Furthermore there are actual tournaments. While SBX does host their own tournaments, e-sports internationally have time and time again relied upon the LAN party scene to hold competitions of any scale using the LAN party design.
LAN parties have a lot to offer. While you may not yet consider LAN parties for yourself, there are others who do.
Also to put it into a bit of perspective, SBX (Switchbox for those not in Calgary) allows you to play on their systems at a rate of $4.75/hr and $3.33/hr as a member (CAD).
Let's crunch this a bit.
The event we are hosting here is 32 hours (with some leeway). If you were to spend the same ammount of time at SBX that would net:
$152 as a regular attendee
$106.56 as a member
Consider that the cost of entry for our event is substantially cheaper for the same amount of time, and as such we also offer tournaments with cash prizes. Considering this we believe the services we offer to be very reasonable.
Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Hmm you got me there.
For the record though I have been to a few lan parties. I'll be fair and admit though, that it is indeed my personal opinion that I do not find them as enjoyable as other social events. Who knows other people might.
Granted though it is 4 months, hopefully by then the attendance will pick up, and HoN will be alot more polished then it is currently. People certainly know about this event, I have seen posts all over the university. In any case I doubt I will actually go, but at the least I might be interested in spectating, if that is viable?
Neways best of luck with this.

I've brought probably 6 buds into the game, maybe a few more. Phr00t, xPooHx, Souljah (well I didn't bring him in, but he's a bud of mine anyways), and a few others who are still learning the game.
I know a bunch of the DoTA players around CGY are also moving into HoN. People like Voldo I think.
Considering the uptake of DoTA in the comp scene here in CGY I'm sure more will follow.

To re-assure you yes it will be 5v5 and it will be the original map (I can never remember the damn name of the map). This info should be on the details of the event, is it not there? Let me know if anything is missing on there, it should be there.
It is uncertain yet what mode it will be, but I'm considering BD. Definately no EM.
Oh, btw, there's a big announcement for the HoN tournament coming up soon when I get a chance to get all our ducks in a row ;))))))))))))

I'm very happy to announce a new partnership between LANified! and S2 games. S2 games will be sponsoring the upcoming March "The Second Decade" LAN party. As such we would like to cover the changes to the prizes for Heroes of Newerth.
For the coming March event both tournaments will have cash prizes. Furthermore the prize pots stagger as more people pledge for those tournaments. With our new sponsorship with S2 we will be increasing the budget for the Heroes of Newerth cash pots. They will reflect as follows:
1-14 Pledges: $50 1st place
15-29 Pledges: $250 1st place
30+ Pledges: $500 1st place
Please join me in welcoming S2's support.

Figured as much, 2010 isn't the second decade of the XXI century. It's the 10th year of the first decade of said century (a decade has 10 years). It's a common error, especially in the US + CA :)

It is more meaning the second decade for the LAN party organization than the calendar decade. (that's how I am trying to present it anyways)

We have a great announcement for participants today! I was recently provided enough Heroes of Newerth keys to supply every prepaid person up to our 40 person capacity with a key. Even if you have a key already we will provide you with a key (but limit 1 per person from us). If you are likely to attend our event we recommend you prepay. It costs less, gets you a key right away, enables you to pledge for tournaments (which increases prize pots), and helps us determine how many are sure to show up. We are currently working on the best way to distribute these keys, but if you simply cannot wait, just contact me directly through our forums and I'll message you the key (should you be prepaid of course). This is a perfect opportunity to not only try this fantastic game out, but it also offers practice to those who are trying to get ready for our coming tournament.

Right beside the title for the tournament there is a link to Tournament Details... it links to the following page: http://www.lanified.com/tournaments/details/7
I have been trying to determine if we can refine the rules, but it seems HoN has most of the rules already rolled into the game.

As the event approaches we are continually working to make sure everything goes off smashingly. Furthermore, we look for new opportunities. For this coming event we are arranging for there to be food services on-site. The food services will primarily focus around proper food and some snacks. The menu and pricing are not yet finalized, but here is a glimpse into what we are looking at so far.
Core dishes:
-Mac and cheese
-Cheddar cheese smokies
-Chicken caesar wrap
-Grilled ham and cheese
-Mini pizzas
Snacks:
-Candy
-Pop
-Chips
As for seating, we're running out of it! we only have about 16 spots left, so if you're thinking of coming then sign up. If you want to ensure you have a seat at the event, prepay. All prepaid attendees are guaranteed seats, otherwise it is first-come first-served. If you do prepay, don't forget to pledge the tournaments you want to enter too. Pledging costs nothing (but is only available to prepaid attendees) and results in larger prize pots.

As the event is approaching even closer we are working on finalizing all the elements. As such we have calculated the estimated maximum times of the HoN and TF2 tournaments. While the HoN tournament could potentially result in a drastically longer tournament than TF2 (at maximum numbers) we are seeing more interest in TF2. As such we will be having the TF2 tournament on Saturday at 2pm, and the HoN tournament on Sunday at noon. If interest in HoN explodes, we will have the first half of the HoN tournament on Saturday (TBD, but after TF2) and the second half on Sunday, likely to continue at noon.
So, to re-iterate
TF2: Saturday 2pm
HoN: Sunday Noon (unless interest explodes)
Since the event is coming up real fast, we will be closing prepay this coming Saturday (February 27th) at 10pm. If you are sure you are coming we recommend you prepay while you still have the opportunity. If you or someone you know who is trying to prepay and is having technical difficulties with our site or paypal we advise you contact us immediately to correct any issues, best to post on the forums. It is also worth noting that our TF2 tournament is only 3 pledges away from hitting the 15 person threshold for the $150 prize pot, so don't forget to pledge for the tournaments you want to enter.
Hope to see you there!
