Welcome to my guide on The Dark Lady. The Dark lady is Heroes of Newerth's best scaling(arguably) late game carry. Early game she relies heavily on her baby sitter to look after her, but really starts to shine mid game, where you can take advantage of her Ultimate and silence. She is, in my opinion, ones of the games hardest heroes to play, requiring timing, placement and the knowledge of when to hold them, and when to fold them. Her abilities, while mana heavy, are on a relatively short cooldown, she requires patience and cunning. If you enjoy a challenge, rather than taking The Madman, Pestilence or Sand Wraith as your teams next late game carry, my guide is here to encourage you to pick The Dark Lady, instead.

The Dark Lady
~ Guide By Darkalbino

Wielding twin, scythe-like blades, the she-reaper known as the Dark Lady
has moved through the Legion's ranks like a shadow of death. For soldiers
seeking to buck up their courage, she is a punch-line: "Careful you don't
find the Dark Lady," they joke to their carousing friend. But even these
jokes are accompanied by a shudder. Swift and cold and lethal as the
frozen winds off the steps, black as the cloud-choked night,
she is no laughing matter.

Skill Build

This is my personal favourite:

8: Dark Blades

This is a very gank orientated build, maxing out slow as soon as possible to allow your mid to take full advantage of the slowed target. The Charging strike is there for when that gank happens, to get in range, or to alternatively escape, when their mid comes down on you. Other builds include aggressive lane domination, for when you are teamed up with a great support like Nmphora:

1: Taint Soul
2: Charging Strikes
3: Dark Blades
4: Charging Strikes
5: Charging Strikes
6: Cover Of Darkness

Standard Item Build

The most controversial part of every guide, the item selection section. A new range of boots have just been brought out, and I am yet to decide on which to take, so for now, Ill keep it light.

Starting Out

The standard across all carries:

2 x Pretenders Crowns, 2 x Runes Of the Blight, 1 x Minor Totem
(185 x 2 = 370, 90 x 2 = 180, 53 = 603)

The Tainted Hitting Build:

1 x Pretenders Crown, 2 x Runes Of the Blight, 2 x Mana Potion 2 x Minor Totem
(185, 90 x 2, 50 x 2, 53 x 2 = 571)

Nullfire Build: The Nullfire build starts out pretty standard, like all of my builds. Nullfire directly counters Jeraziah, Hellbringer and Hammerstorm, all of which are considered top picks at the moment, so this will be a fairly common build. It will also increase your ability to score a successful gank that much more, just as Taint wears off, hit them with a Nullfire charge and watch them crawl as your Dark Blades just shred through them. You should aim for Nullfire by around 22-28 minutes, depending on how well you are farming. The Nullfire also stacks with your dark blades, so that 22/26 Agility just became 47/58 attack! You should work for your wingbow by 40-45minutes. From here on, its down hill. Farming is easier, you will survive for so much longer in fights, and will normally only die unless you are focussed first (but hey, a carry's gotta do what a carry's gotta do). The geometers bane seals the deal, be sure to pop it before you use Dark Blades, otherwise it will remove the buff. This Build essentially stacks Agi. Once you have all your items you should be over 200 agi, you are a powerhouse. This means you will be hitting for more then 500 damage each strike, not to mention your images. A very strong carry build, which absolutely rapes other carries like The Madman or Magebane.

Shrunken Build: Shrunken Head(BKB) build focuses on getting BKB as early as possible, normally before 22 minutes if you are farming on par. This is great against a team of disablers/stunners, so Pollywog, Succubus (even though her Ulti goes through BKB, you wont take damage, however), Puppet Master etc. Pop BKB, blades, strike in and decimate mid game, your damage wont be that high, but your slow and Ulti are invaluable in mid game team fights. Once again, going for the core Wingbow. An amazing item on the Dark Lady, the BKB should be able to hold you up all game, which is great, the majority of the enemies disables will have been used on your team mates, and you are left to eat up their squishies with your blades. Late game I like to head for Frostwolfs Skull, it adds disable to your team, slowing everyone you hit, no one is able to get away from you with this awesome item! Even though the price is very high, and you wont be getting it in 95% of games, when you do get it, you'll want the game to last forever so you can farm up your team's k/d.

Runed Axe Build: The Runed Axe build is a solid DPS build, it synergies' best when you have someone on your team who will be farming up a Whispering Helm, the dominated creep can then be used to stack ancients, which of course, once you get your Runed Axe, becomes easy to farm 10 x Ancient Stack. This will vastly increase your farm by sometimes up to 2000 gold for every 6-7 minutes (if you don't miss a stack, the rune timer is great for not missing stacks). After you have completed your runed axe, which should be around 25-30 minutes, with consistent stacking (or if you have had an Andromeda in mid, which isn't a good thing unless the solo purpose of her being there is to stack the ancients) you should farm a Wingbow by 35-38 minutes, then be heading for Frostwolfs by 60. Definitely my favourite build, you really notice the extra damage that Runed Axe puts out.

Other Items

http://i543.photobucket.com/albums/gg455/Darkalbino_/Okay-1.jpg

These Items are all viable in place of any late game item, they are all great items that work with Dark Lady, the only reason I take Wingbow is because it adds the 93 damage with Dark Blades and adds awesome survivability. Shield Breaker is amazing and can be used when the enemy team has alot of physical. Applying Shield Breaker to everything you Strike over, the whole enemy team enjoys -6 armor for the duration of the effect, great fun! Riftshards, stacks great with your Blades(standard crit will hit for 532, with blades will hit for 900+). True Mace adds great damage, but Im not really a fan, Riftshards IMO is a much better option, but hey, who says you cant get them both? Behemoths hard is currently bugged on Agi, but it does add 1k hp, and you cant go wrong with that, can you? Daemonic can be a good addition to Shieldbreaker, you shouldn't go for it before Shield breaker, because you will apply broken armor to everyone when you strike through them. Charged hammer also proc's over your Strike, so get a creep wave and 5 enemies, and enjoy the lightning.

Items To Avoid

http://i543.photobucket.com/albums/gg455/Darkalbino_/Avoid.jpg

These Items are generally items that I will avoid, Mana regen, while great for farming, is kinda pointless in fights. The Silence and hex is great, for a support class, as a Agi Carry you require damage, lots of it. On that note, it is not your role to tank, avoid Helm, even if you are being Targeted first (your better off getting a gem, lol). Hack And Slash is just an all round bad item, don't bother. Mock, while giving good aoe, is expensive and you could have wingbow bought instead. Symbol is expensive, while it synergizes well with your blades, adds strength, when we want Agi.

Best Laning Partners

Demented Shaman [Healer]

http://honwiki.net/w/images/f/f3/Demented_Shamanhero.gif

Demented Shaman is your best friend when he's laning with you, his heal is amazing, his stun/slow synergizes perfectly with Tainted Soul, and the rest of your abilities. Not to mention Arcane hide. He is a great harasser and can give you so much safety for all your last hitting requirements.

Nymphora [Healer]

http://honwiki.net/w/images/6/67/Nymphorahero.gif

Nymphora works wonders with The Dark Lady, her mana regen can create so much pressure for the enemy laners, with you laying down constant slow+strike+blades, the heal, the stun, its all magical with this little fairy!

Voodoo Jester [Healer]

http://honwiki.net/w/images/2/29/Voodoo_Jesterhero.gif

Voodoo Jester is the third ranged class with a natural heal, he offers a stun which can be very annoying for two heroes standing close together, and the cursed ground offers an almost guaranteed gank. Having a great range, he is also great at harassing to let you get all those last hits.

Pollywog Priest [Lane Control]

http://honwiki.net/w/images/2/2d/Pollywog_Priesthero.gif

Pollywog Priest's magical bindings allow you hit with insane damage, the moment a melee enemy comes in for a last hit, bindings, dark blades, death insures. Polymorph also gives you survivability in clutch situations.

Electrician [Lane Control]

http://honwiki.net/w/images/d/d4/Electricianhero.gif

Electricians Static Grip gives amazing lane control, just like Pollywogs Bindings. It is great with Dark Lady as it applies pressure to the enemy laners.

Accursed [Protector]

http://honwiki.net/w/images/2/2f/Accursedhero.gif

Accursed' fire shield is one of the best moves in the game, negating the majority of stuns, debuffs and other harmful things, he has a heal and can tank a fair bit of damage. He is an ideal laning partner due to both of these abilities.

Worst Enemies

Succubus

Play style

You're play style will depend on your laning partner, obviously you will play a much more offensive lane with Nymphora then you will with Ophelia, and you will play alot more passive against Hammerstorm/Jeraziah then you will against Sand/Glacius. Assuming you are playing against a competitive team, who knows how to pick lanes (Pestilence and Shaman, or Sand and Plague) you will be focusing on last hitting rather then harassing. Your laning partner (baby sitter) will need to be drawing the creeps by focusing the enemy heroes so that you can last hit without their harassment. Picking up a loggers hatchet can be a good investment, if you are missing out on those last hits. I normally don't pick one up though as it isn't too essential, you can pick up the majority of your early game items from the side shop, and should be able to send over resupplies from the courier your baby sitter would have bought. Items that you cannot afford a(HP/Mana pots) should be purchased by your babysitter for you and sent on the courier with other items that you have purchased (Boots).

So for the majority of the laning phase you will be focusing on last hitting, try not to do alot of harassing, however, if your mid does pick up a good rune (haste, DD, invis) then increase your aggression when they come down to gank some enemy heroes. Try to keep it in the laning phase for as long as possible, you can keep things even here. When people move onto pushing towers or team ganking, thats when your weakness' start to show through and your lack of survivability.
