With the large patch from a few weeks ago came a small change to Blacksmith's Fireball. The damage was buffed from 75/125/175/275 to 100/150/200/275. This led me to wonder whether the previously established 1/2/2/1/2/1/2/1/4 build was still optimal.
Below is the updated damage progression, taking into account the recent damage buff and enemy magic resistance:

Blue cells indicate maximum damage and maximum efficiency (damage/mana)
It seems that the preferred build for maximizing expected output is still 1/2/2/1/2/1/2/1/4, saving the ultimate for level 9.
Your guides do not need to be updated. Crisis averted.
(FYI the damage multiplier to Fireball for his ultimate is 1.25 / 1.60 / 1.875)
