Basically I want to get into modeling. Starting with importing models for other games into hon, and eventually making my own custom alts. I was wondering, where is a good jump off point to start learning the basics? Any links, tips, or suggestions where to begin? I've been browsing around on the forums looking, figure I'll ask in case I over looked anything.

Ok firstly modelling characters is not easy. At all. I have been practicing modelling for over a year in lightwave and I still can't create decent character models.
I don't know exactly how to go about doing it I just thought I'd let you know it's hard work creating your own.
You can download lightwave, maya or 3d studio max and then download free quake models or whatever that other people have created and from there export to whatever file types hon uses.
That's all I can give you.
Hope it helps at least alittle.

Any questions just ask, I've enough 3dsmax experience, not in modeling characters much, I've skinned and rigged insects and animals though.
Also I'm finishing my study in Media and design with specialisation as 3Ds max, so I can litterally answer anything you need to know.
1. If ur a total newby you should keep these buttons in mind: F,T,L they stand for Front, Top and Left view, also P for perspective.
2. Whenever ur modeling with Mesh or Poly, remember the buttons 1,2,3,4, they stand for, Vertex,Edges,Borders and polygons.
3. When modeling you will also need to know "connect" and "extrude" they're basicly the main things you use while modeling, in combination with the move and scale tool.
4. Keep the polygons under 3000 to see that, press 7 in 3dsmax, F3 is wireframe, F4 is show lines, G is turn off grid.
