View Full Version : New School Tactics - How to win Public HON Matches!

Fantasy HON
"New School Tactics" by The Great Luzarius

By applying concepts from fantasy football I've thought up a completely new way to play Heroes of Newerth. This guide is strongly recommended for new players who want to increase their PSR. This guide puts you in control of every public HON match you play ensuring your victory.

"A Good Manager"
60% of the game
http://doublethepost.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/phil-jackson-cracks-a-smile.jpg

The key to winning a hon match lies in your player management skills.

Host game
1) Create a game on "easy mode" since you want to get straight to the PVP and less PVE.

Match Title
2) It is extremely important to put "5v5 Apem (ASS) Noobs" in the title of your match. This way when people join they will ask "what does ass stand for?", when they ask this make sure you put these people on the opposing team since they asked such a dumb question.

PSR stacking
3) Look for people with low psrs who have high exp gains and put them on your team. Put people with high psr and low exp gain on the opposing team.

Communication
4) I'll talk to the people I think are good and make them check in. As long as they can type "hi" it means they are not a complete retard. When someone says "hi" it's an indication that they are willing to communicate and work as a team. If they don't respond at all, that will be your enemy. Stick them on the other team since you know they won't communicate.

No language gap
5) Ensure you don't have a language gap. If someone responds "pin nong backlay baboy" then you know you have a language gap. Avoid language gaps for they decrease your chances of winning since you can't communicate!

Note: People with extremely high assists are always my favorite to have on a team. You know that they are team players!

Note: People who have a lot more kills than deaths are the guys you tell to go middle!

"Hero Selection Screen"
30% of the game

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_mqoznq0jnI4/SmtG5u9k4XI/AAAAAAAAAHc/GAy2RAgCmY0/s400/load3.jpg

The second most important part of HON is the combo of classes players pick.

Tanks Tanks Tanks
1) A good host/leader/manager will always tank. Most players are extremely selfish and they simply want to make kills. By swallowing your pride and being a good tank you can ensure these other players make the kills they want. Good tanking is the key to winning this game.

Overpowered Classes First
2) I will spam the names of overpowered classes in hopes that my team will pick one of them. By presenting them with a choice it's more likely they will pick what you suggest. So instead of saying "you pick this class", just say "hey are u good at any one of these classes?" Make sure this is copy & pasted and ready to spam in team chat. I've found a 70% success rate with this method.

Balance
3) I strive for 2 tanks and 3 ranged killers. Two tanks initiate while the other 3 kill.

NOTE: There is a popular misconception that this game is "balanced" and that certain classes counter each other, SO USE IT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!!!. Picking the overpowered classes first instead of playing what you want you'll will guarantee your victory. Remember by picking the overpowered classes your enemy is forced to try and pick a "balanced" class to fight against you thus you maintaining your advantage. Overpowered classes are better than balanced classes!

"Yelling via VOIP"
9% of the game
http://freshpeel.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/yelling.JPG

Once the game starts I remind everyone of the simplest strategy of the game.

"5 People get together, ok now destroy the tower, gank him!!!! Ok let's go shop!"

I'll shout that over VOIP about 1000 times for the next 35 minutes.

"Actual Combat"
1% of the game
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.wow.com/media/2008/03/ah0327iwin.jpg

"Use your ult". For 20-35 minutes I will shout that over & over again. That sums up HON combat.

From level 1-6 buy marcher boots, that's it. Don't waste your money on totems, potions, wards or any stupid crap like that. That stuff is for normal mode. Easy mode = buy marchers boots and just hold out until level 6. Once you get into a 5 man group you just go around wrecking EVERYTHING.

OH and never last hit or deny. It's a total waste of time. Probably one of the dumbest concepts in the history of gaming. So instead of insulting yourself learning a flawed mechanic, just don't do it. Have the middle guy come and gank the bottom and top and u'll get any gold the enemy last hitted back in your pocket! lol.

When you come back to shop push your lanes back and deny any towers that are left. By being a horrible laner you will totally throw your enemy off guard since most players are laning noobs.

The undeniable truth of my tactics is that they work. My score has gone from 1203 to 1585.

I'm very new to HON and my tactics are so new and so radical that they work. I still have no idea how to really play this game but my PSR is better than most veteran dota players.

Well, I guess if hosting -em to bump up your PSR and get free wins then yeah your PSR is better than quite a few of people who played DotA before.

But a semi-entertaining read anyway

Over the course of a large number of games, your PSR will come to reflect your actual skill level. The only way to continually raise your PSR is to just get better at being the best player you can be.

Although I did enjoy your guide.

You messed up your lineup:
2 tanks to do the dirty work
2 support to do some damage
1 scout to get the kills

best tip, many player tend to be more or less like BOTS.

Yelling also works nice, specially if some bastard is complaining all the time.

that is hilarious. but the yelling over VOIP constantly won't work for 99.9% of the HoN playing population. You can't intimidate and coerce your team into working together when all they hear is the high pitched voice of some whiny little scrawny virgin.

If you see the numbers and do the math, bothering to last hit really is a waste of time. More info on this in the HoN wiki.

Like I said I raised my score from 1200 to upper 1500's. Look at my score now not from a month ago.

HOnage.net is an obvious shitty site if they can keep proper stats. I urge them to learn how to program properly.

I"m not the greatest player, Honestly I'm pretty shitty at this game. But because of my guide I was able to get the following stats. Not the greatest but I"m not claiming to be an expert.

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5089/honsucks.jpg

Now get this. I was actually 1605 ... I finally broke 1600's ... But then the chat server went down. I was unable to look at peoples stats. I played 4 games and lost all of them and my score shot down to 1571.

You know why I lost all 4 games? Most of the time it was 4vs5 or 3vs5 .. There were people who just didn't know how to exp or kill. I didn't know which person to tell to go middle. I had no control without stats.

I will never ever play games when the chat server is down. You have no idea who you're playing with or against. It's dumb.

Finally someone who understands :)

I can understand last hitting & denying in normal mode (not easy mode). But in easy mode it's just a waste of time.

Easy Mode = PVP

Normal Mode = More pve.

Wait, so you're serious about last hitting/denying? I thought the entire post was sarcasm. Holy lolcat, do you happen to have heard of a hero called "Soulstealer"? Or even "Zephyr" or "Blood Hunter"? I suppose not.

You do know that if you just stand there hitting enemy creeps you will get pwned by Soulstealer/Any decent ranged hero when he denies all your xp and ends up level 6 when you're still level 2?

HoN must have been revamped overnight.

If you already know how to last hit and deny it's not a big investment, unless you're getting heavily harassed. (In EM of course!)
And all the tips on knowing your team and checking to see if they talk are good even in non-em, lol.
...sadly even the tip about naming it 5v5 APEM noobs works...

Your definition of veteran dota players must be way above absurd. Someone who played casual Dota for more than 3years is by NO MEANS a veteran. And if you happen to be in a game w/ a person claiming hes a "veteran dota player" chances are hes lying. BTW had a great time reading this. Lots of Laughs! :D

PSR is really a worthless indicator atm. Without an automatch feature, it's not to be trusted at all.

Too many people, hosts mostly try to stack games in thier favour. No AB, locks all over the place, it's all bs.

I disagree about PSR being a reflection on individual skill, it is a reflection on the teams skill that you chose to be with.

Which is what most games are about these days, handpicking the team you want whilst not wanting to be on the other side who do not realise in time. You can easily increase your win/loss ration and conversly PSR that way.

That is what I dislike most about HoN the current way stats and team picking works. Just playing for fun sucks because unless you check everything out and chose the team to win you are going to end up losing and your stats suffer and then conversly everything does in the game as people are all stats focused rather than fun focused. (Balancing by PSR also sucks, auto balance doesn't take into account individual skill by k/d or assist or exp gain, which is how you can really manipulate the system, by the player taking into account these).

I just wish there was more where it could be fun (hence playing a lot more unranked games now).

Depends
02-16-2010, 03:11 AM
PSR means nothing. exp/min and KDA is what you want. Besides if you play an inhouse people will look at your EM percentage and won't like it very much when they see your 99%.

It probably takes a long ass time to start a game when you stack the teams like that too.
