Corrupted Trees
Darkness is spreading in the land of Newerth. A demonic force let by the powerful Hellbourne is treating to destroy all that is good and living in the Forest of Caldavar. At the local tavern mighty heroes are recruited to join the forces of the resistance – the force of light – called The Legion. If things don’t change soon the evil will reach The World Tree, which will ultimately mean the end of Newerth as we know it.
Present at the tavern tonight is many well-known faces. Drunken Master, Leprechaun Blacksmith and Engineer are all among the regulars, but some other not so well-known faces are represented as well. Chipper, Jeraziah, Bubbles and Ophelia have all been sent here by their leader Keeper of the Forest to recruit heroes for the upcoming battle.
“Another round of beer for me and my mates,” yells Drunken Master. “I’m all out of beer!!” The three locals are playing dice while drinking heavily.
“Roooll the dice! Are you feeling lucky?!” shouts the little dwarf, while jumping intoxicated up and down. Jeraziah looked with disgrace at the drunken so-called-heroes sitting in the corner.
“I refuse to fall here. Lights guide me!”
“Don’t be such a buzz killer, Jeraziah,” says Ophelia. “They look like good soldiers. Perhaps they are willing to fight against the dark forces, if we get to know them better. I say we join them for a couple of pints!” Bubbles and Chipper nods in agreement.
“It’s settles then! We’ll sit down for a couple of hours, and then ask the question”.
Bubbles quickly (all is relative when you’re a turtle, right?) came up with a good way to break the ice. He grabbed the beer from the counter, threw his shell in the direction of the drunken locals and few seconds later, he was sitting next to them.
“When I was your age, Earth was newer,” he said with his rusty old voice. Impressed by the aged turtle’s skills, they welcomed him and his fellow travelers. Few moments later both the chatting and the game of dice was going swimmingly.
Engineer was hammered. Eagerly trying to beat Leprechaun Blacksmith’s pair of sixes, one of Engineer’s die tumbled out of the cup, thereby breaking the rules. The die went straight to the face of the little dwarf.
“Right between the eyes!” laughed Engineer, but he quickly realized he just had lost.
“Where’s my gold?” smiled the leprechaun.
“I will get the next round”. Engineer got up, and slowly moved his drunken body towards the bar.
“Phew, I need to get me self some better boots!” The whole table laughed.
The mood reached new heights, when Engineer came back with a whole keg of beer.
“Argh, this pack is heavy!”
“Less complaining, more beer!” shouted Chipper, who was in a good mood after the first couple of rounds. His eyes then fell on a bowl of nuts. With a speed greater than the speed of light, he had gotten up, grabbed the bowl of peanuts, and begun chewing. Clearly addicted to peanuts, Chipper quickly consumed every last one directly from the bowl. Chipper raised his shaking hand, in dire need of more nuts, and waved at the barkeep. “I’m out of nuts!!” screamed the little rodent. The innkeeper swiftly rushed to his side, bringing him a fresh bowl of nuts. “Let’s get in gear,” he said to his fellow heroes, now much calmer.
“Just my thought, Chipper,” replied Jeraziah. He had been sitting in almost complete silence, ever since they had joined the three regulars. He started explaining the situation. The mood suddenly changed. Everyone in the booth suddenly became more serious. It was clear that they all understood the gravity of coming events.
When Jeraziah was done talking, it took a while before anyone spoke. Finally Engineer said something.
“If we’re going to fight these corrupted trees and such, I know the perfect man for the job. It’s a certain lumberjack I was fighting side by side with back in the great encounter of ’77. He’s known by the name of Logger Legionnaire”.
Suddenly the door sprang open and a strong-looking goddess entered the tavern. It was Valkyrie in all her light and glory. Jeraziah knew this great warrior. Why hadn’t he thought about her before? He quickly got up from his chair, and went straight over to her.
“Greetings warrior! How are you this fine evening? I would be pleased, if you would sit at our table. We are speaking of troubled times, and we need all the heroes we can get to fight the dark forces!” Valkyrie looked at him with serious grime.
“Let’s act quickly! We will leave within the hour!” Jeraziah was stunned. Such determination. Such passion. What a woman!
“We need a good battle plan!!” said Jeraziah loudly, trying to sound as manly as possible. When Valkyrie sat down at the table, Bubbles looked at her with a strange admirably look.
“Don’t you know who I am?” she asked in an offended, yet proud, tone. The turtle looked surprised at her.
“Of course I remember who you are, just not at this moment!” Valkyrie shook her head, and started to discuss the plan. After a fairly short amount of time, they had all agreed upon what should be done. All eight finished their pints, thanked the barkeep for the hospitality and left the tavern with great haste. They had to find legionnaire, and they had to be fast.

They had walked for several hours, before they encountered anything living. It was one of Keeper of the Forest’s scouts. A treant made from the forest itself. In the tongue of Caldavar it spoke of the corruption in the woods. Since Ophelia had the power to control both friendly and enemy creatures, she had learned to speak this language, and with heavy heart she translated the sad tale to the others; the treant spoke of the fall of great heroes. The mighty Pebbles and the noble Vindicator had been ambushed by a team of Hellbourne. They had both fallen.
“Their deaths will be avenged!!” shouted Ophelia.
“They don’t stand a chance!” applied the little dwarf, and clenched his two hammers against each other, which caused fire to spring from the very metal. They decided to follow the treant in the direction where the Hellbourne party was last seen.
When they finally got a sense that the enemy was nearby, they had a handful of combat ready trees at their disposal.
“I can see Slither, Pestilence and Plague Rider,” said Jeraziah quietly. “If that’s all, we should be able to take them with ease”. They waited for the right moment before Valkyrie sent her mighty javelin straight towards Pestilence’s hard shell. Direct hit! Bubbles followed up with his kelp field. After the perfect initiation they all stormed the small group.
“Attack!” yelled Valkyrie. With some quickly stuns the Leprechaun and Engineer had slain Slither, but his powerful and poisonous ultimate was causing havoc and suffering, among the heroes.
“Too bad, boyo!” smiled the little dwarf.
Seconds later a new enemy appeared out of nowhere. It was Chronos. With his impressive leap he was right next to the two stunners in no time, and with a tick of the clock, time stood still. The only one quick enough to react was Chipper. Oil and saw blades went off, and with a high pinched “burn ‘em down!” he had fired three rockets right into Chronos’ face. As a result of this the blue master of time was slain. Surprisingly enough was Plague Rider still alive. Before any of them had time to react, his toxic ultimate was cast, and it just kept bouncing between all of them. Ophelia reacted quickly.
“Newerth’s blessing!!” and a beam of light hit the entire party, restoring their health. Drunken Master jumped towards the greenish rider, did a little dance around him and shortly after sending him straight into a bunch of trees. The Hellbourne party had been defeated.
Even though Engineer had taken a serious blow to the head thanks to Chronos’ axe, the only real casualties of The Legion was the treants.

The journey took them for a brief moment out of the forest, and just before they entered the mighty forest of Caldavar, they crossed a beautiful green meadow, with flowers in all colors spread all over it. This was truly a sight to behold. Everyone gazed upon the colorful sea of flowers in every color of the rainbow, but they couldn’t all escape the thought that once they leave this paradise, they would have to face the strong dark force of The Hellbourne. In silence they journeyed onwards, and soon after they found themselves in the shade of the enormous trees of Caldavar.
Shortly after they had entered the forest, they heard a small noise coming from the right side of the road. Since they all knew it was hostile territory, they were all quickly alerted.
“Let’s act quickly,” shouted Valkyrie, and leapt towards the noise. A few seconds later she came back with a squirrel-looking creature in her hand. Chipper looked shocked.
“Fear the Chiprell!!!” he yelled, while looking away in fear.
“You stupid rodent. It’s not the mighty Chiprell. It’s just a raccoon!” said Ophelia.
“Argh, stupid rakun!!” said Chipper, clearly sounding ashamed that he had reacted the way he did.
“Sometimes you can’t tell your tail from your head, huh Chipper?” smiled Bubbles, “you’re IQ must be equal to Armaddon’s”. Everyone, except Valkyrie, laughed hard.
“Forward,” she said, again with serious grime.
The rest of the party briefly shared an awkward look, and then they continued deeper into the forest.
They finally got to the rendezvous point, where they met Keeper. He told the party that the Hellbourne was spotted just few minutes away, and that they had to act fast.
“Let’s branch out,” he said with his old voice, clearly marked by time. They followed his lead and just as he said, a few minutes later they spotted the first couple of heroes. Keeper made himself invisible, walked right next to the enemy and then final battle was on.
“I can cover a lot of ground!” shouted the aged tree, and rooted everyone single Hellbourne to the ground. Valkyrie stunned the mighty Kraken with her javelin. Bubbles followed up with his ultimate. It all looked like they were going to win, but then The Legion party got rooted themselves. Black, twisted strong roots and vines had a tight grip on Blacksmith and Chipper. Out of nowhere came this massive black tree and punched chipper right in his nuts. Jeraziah shouted “Sol’s blessing”, but it was too late. Chipper had fallen. They all had to keep fighting. To save Blacksmith Jeraziah applied his protective charm to him, but the colossal tree hit with a power he hadn’t expected. Blacksmith died shortly after.
More Hellbourne villains came rushing, and all hope seemed lost. But then a deep and furious growl came thundering through the trees. A huge lumberjack-looking man came rushing towards the enemy.
“Someone will get the axe!” he shouted with a voice so terrifying and fearless. He was a mad man. He charged right towards them all!
“Boom shakalaka,” yelled Engineer, “It’s me old friend Legionnaire!” With new hope and strength The Legion once more fought for victory.
“No mercy for the enemy!” “For Newerth!” “They will be shaking like leaves!” The Hellbourne villains now fell one by one until only the great black tree was left standing. The lumberjack once again charged straight towards him.
“Let the great axe fall,” screamed the lumberjack and jumped in the air. He swung his mighty axe with immense strength and brought down Deadwood. With one single blow he had decapitated the malevolent tree, and all the branches fell to the ground. The evil corruption was no more. All the trees turned green again, and birds were singing. The Hellbourne was deafeated. Newerth was once again saved.

Hail to the champion, baby!
