There's a lot of information about the map that needs to be written down. For now, I've created a quick start guide that should get new players up and playing. Former WC3 players should have no trouble playing it, other than getting used to the HoN interface.

Known Issues - v0.51


If you crash a lot in normal HoN, chances are you may crash as well when playing this map. Try playing in OpenGL mode to help mitigate this (but see next point).

OpenGL mode currently has a giant black square plastered in the middle map. See the picture below for an example of what it looks like.

Quick Start Guide

Loading the Map


Download the map using the link above and place it in your Heroes of Newerth installation under ../Heroes of Newerth/game/maps.
Open Heroes of Newerth and login.
Click on Create Game, select Practice for server type, select Element TD for map.


Setting Up the Game


Game mode and difficulty can be set on the Admin Tower in the upper left corner of the map.

The default game mode is All Pick and the default difficulty is Normal.
If this is your first time playing, try setting the difficulty to Easy or Very Easy by clicking on the items in the Admin Tower inventory.


Level up the Builder's (Q) ability to start earning Interest.


Building Towers


Cannon Tower and Arrow Tower are the only available towers to begin with. They are located on the Builder's (W) and (E) abilities.

Hit (W) or (E) and click on the ground to place a tower. A tower can only be placed in certain places, so look for the square underneath your cursor for a square showing where the tower will be placed.
As you gain Elements, the Builder's items will become unlocked, allowing you to build Elemental towers and their upgrades.


Spawning an Elemental



Every 5 levels in All Pick mode, an Elemental can be spawned from the Shop, which is next to the Admin Tower.

There are three tiers of each Elemental: Amplified, Focused, and Refined.
Each time you spawn an Elemental in the Shop, it will increase the Elemental to the next tier.

Tier 2 (Focused) Elementals are hard to kill than Tier 1 (Amplified), and Tier 3 (Refined) Elementals are much harder to kill than Tier 1.
Generally, you want to wait on spawning Tier 2/3 Elementals until later in the game, when you have towers that can kill them easier. Try spawning multiple Tier 1 Elementals of different types in the first stages of the game.



Elemental Towers


Once you kill an Elemental, you can build an Elemental tower.
Elemental towers do damage based on the type of Element they are.
Elemental towers can be upgraded to Dual Combination and Triple Combination towers.

For example, if you have killed a Fire and Water Elemental, you can build a Vapor Tower.



Upgrading Towers


Towers can be upgraded to become more powerful. The types of upgrades available for a tower depend on what kind of tower is trying to be upgraded.

Basic towers (Cannon Tower, Arrow Tower) have no requirements other than cost.

Basic towers are upgraded by selecting them and hitting (R).


Elemental towers (Darkness, Earth, Fire ... ) require the next tier of Elemental to be killed before they can be upgraded.

The Tier 1 Elemental unlocks the base Elemental tower as well as the Amplified Elemental tower.
An Elemental tower can be upgraded in the same way as a Cannon or Arrow Tower, but higher Tier Elementals are required.
After an Elemental tower is upgraded to an Amplified Elemental tower, it can be upgraded when another Element is available to form a combination tower.


Combination towers require 2 or 3 combinations of Elements to construct

To build a combination tower, start by building an Elemental Tower. Possible combination tower upgrades will be listed in the items of the Elemental tower.
An single Elemental tower can be upgraded into a dual combination tower.

Dual combination towers can be upgraded in the same way as a Cannon or Arrow Tower, but require higher Tier Elementals that were combined to make the tower.
Alternatively, a dual combination can be combined with yet another Element to form a triple combination.


A dual combination tower can be upgraded into a triple combination tower.

Triple combination towers can be upgraded in the same way as a Cannon or Arrow Tower, but require higher Tier Elementals that were combined to make the tower.
There are no further combinations beyond triple combinations.





Example of Combination
Suppose I random an Amplified Fire Elemental at level 5, then an Amplified Water Elemental at level 10. I first start by build a Fire Tower (Alt+E) and upgrade it to an Amplified Fire Tower (R). I can then combine my Fire and Water to upgrade to a Vapor Tower (Alt+S). I use this Vapor tower until I reach level 15 and get an Amplified Light Elemental. I can combine this with my Vapor tower to make a :zeph: Windstorm Tower (Alt+E). However, I also gained two more options for dual combination: :doct: Lightning Tower (Fire + Light) and :tund: Ice Tower (Light + Water).

Installing the Map


Download the map from the link in the first post.
Copy the map into your maps folder located in your HoN installation directory, in the game folder (Windows example: C:\Program Files\Heroes of Newerth\game\maps)



Starting the Game

Steps when you can login


Run Heroes of Newerth and login.
Click on the Create Game to bring up the Create Game menu.
In the Create Game menu, set the following options:

Server: Practice
Map: Element TD


​Click on Create Game in the Create Game menu.


Steps when you can't login


Run Heroes of Newerth.
Hit Ctrl+F8 to bring down the Console.
Type in the following and hit Enter:

startgame practice ETD map:elementtd allheroes:true


​When the map loads, hit Ctrl+F8 again to close the Console.

After loading the game, you can setup this round by clicking on the the Admin Tower in the upper left hand corner of the map. The first creep wave starts spawning when the game clock reaches 30 seconds, and you have until then to change the game options and set up your initial towers.

Game Mode
The game mode is set using the abilities of the Admin Tower (Q, W, E, and R). Two game modes can be played.

All Pick (default)

Every 5 levels, a charge is gained on the Shop that can be used to spawn an Elemental.
Allows you to customize an Element "build" by selecting their order; also allows additional levels of Interest.
Towers sell for 75% of the cost used to build and upgrade them.


All Random

Every 5 levels, a random Elemental will spawn, with a maximum of 1 Interest spawn possible.
Forces you down random build paths depending upon what Elements spawn.
Towers sell for 100% of the cost used to build and upgrade them.



Game Difficulty
The game difficulty is set using the items of the Admin Tower (Alt+Q, Alt+E, Alt+R, ...). There are 5 difficulty levels. The difficulty levels affect the amount of health the creeps have as well as the amount of their innate damage reduction.

Very Easy: Incoming damage reduced by 10%. Creep health reduced by 50%.
Easy: Incoming damage reduced by 20%. Creep health reduced by 37.5%.
Normal (default): Incoming damage reduced by 30%. Creep health reduced by 25%.
Hard: Incoming damage reduced by 40%. Creep health reduced by 12.5%.
Very Hard: Incoming damage reduced by 50%. Creep health reduced by 0%.

FAQ
Gameplay

Q. Why does it seem like the Essences or other creeps are invulnerable? Why does creep health sometimes refill after the bar goes down to 0?
The UI can only display a maximum health of 32767. Any number above this will cause the health bar to overflow and not show damage being done to it until it is below 32767. This causes some graphical glitches, like having the bar extended beyond its borders or the bar refilling after it is empty. This is exasperated by the large base health of the Essences.

Would it be possible to make the 'towers' face the unit they're attacking.
It has always looked weird to me how they only face the one direction even when attacking behind them.
Only ever seen 1 war3 map that made the units/buildings turn. Forget the name though.

Severon did a commendable job but didn't get very far with his implementation of this map (no combinations, had to buy towers as recipes from the shop, etc). I didn't use any of his work for my version of the map, and as you can tell from the screenshots and the video I posted they are quite different. I didn't steal anything from anyone; I did all the scripting myself.

Hey guys, I just updated the original post with the download link. I ran into a very large last minute bug wit OpenGL mode and tried to resolve it to no avail. Hopefully it will be fixed soon. Enjoy!

Hey Crae, I really like the map but there is a weird shadow bug, not sure if it's that what you meant.
However I really enjoyed playing this map and i lost on random mode at level 56.

I have played this mode like 10 times now and noticed a bug. sometimes units just randomly stop and you can't kill them in any way. i did manage to kill then cause i had devo but this shouldn't be happening am i right? C: Keep up the good work!

Absolutely amazing map! I've played 2 games of it so far and I noticed two bugs;
- I had the zephyr tower that summons a tornado and the devourer one. Then I made one of those illusion towers that temporarily copies others. But when it copied the zephyr and devourer one, I could use the tornado and the devourer unit permanently:zeph2: (even after I upgraded the illusion tower to something completely different).
- Same bug that happened to Carrion, my essence of crae was invulnerable to all dmg and just steamrolled through.

Nice work in creating this. 1 issue i came across was the essence of crae was invulnerable which lead to a massive loss ^^

I added this to the FAQ on the front page but the short explanation is this: they just have a LOT of health. The UI is incapable of showing how much health they have; depending on when you spawn them they might have had upwards of 100k (even 200k on VH, level 55!) health that you need to tear through. There may be something wrong with the scaling though, I'll certainly check it out. I'll look into the other issues you guys are reporting too, thanks for the feedback!

Hi Crae,

Good job on porting the map. Looks nice, performs nice on my end. No problems whatsoever.

I did find a number of gameplay bugs in the short while I've managed to play though:

1. Cannon and Arrow towers sell for 75% value as opposed to 100%. Unless this was changed recently in the original Ele TD, I remember being able to sell arrow and cannon towers for full value at any time, irrespective of random or all pick.
2. The tower targeting logic is a bit iffy: towers usually target on a first-in, first-shot basis: the creeps at the forefront of the wave are always targeted once they stroll back in range of the tower. In here it doesn't care - it seems to be shooting on a 'closest to last target' basis.
3. Electricity tower is bugged: it only seems to bounce once. First target takes damage, 2nd target takes damage, 3rd target plays effect but no damage, 4th target no damage nor effect.

Good catch. Will be fixed in the next release.

Yeah, I need to add an extra bounce. I went back and studied the Warcraft 3 version and it's actually very buggy, sometimes hitting only 2 or 3 times when there are clearly more targets in range. It seems like the HoN version is equally as bugged, although it hits 3 total targets (which I am increasing to 4) more often than the WC3 version.

Check the FAQ for an explanation as to why Essences seem unkillable. I may scale down their health if necessary.

EU is correct. It's possible to specify an attack priority in HoN based on unit type (example: attack Heroes before Creeps, etc.) but not based on "whomever is in front", as far as I know.

As for other engine limitations, since K2 wasn't built to be a full RTS implementation, you can't shift place buildings like EU said. It also isn't possible to "mass upgrade" towers; in WC3 if you selected multiple towers of the same type, you could upgrade all of them at the same time.

Had a glitch with foundry towers not buffing nearby towers. Once I noticed that they stopped buffing I could no longer upgrade or sell the tower.

First of all, it's a great map :D

Now for the bugs which I found:
any utility tower like 'trickery, forge, well' can stop working and in some cases can't even be sold anymore when they stop functioning.
Though I couldn't figure out when they get bugged.

The other bug is that 'Essence of Crae' takes no dmg at all in any stage of the game.

Sometimes, a tower seems to randomly stop attacking altogether. I'm not sure why this happens, but it is detrimental to the overall game experience. I can have them continue to attack by making them right-click an enemy, but it is very burdensome and I usually don't notice right away. It can happen with any type of tower, from what I've seen.

Edit: It happens the most with Witchcraft Tower—the one that casts maledict.

I'm playing this map for 2 days now; on very easy (i'm a beginner) but it's still very fun to play. Thanks to Crae and any others involved with porting and making this map; it's a great switch from the usual HoN routine and well made. I haven't yet noticed as many bugs as others have - becouse i play very casually, except that unkillable essence, which i usually leave unspawned... my current record is 46 waves on very easy, but i'll keep on practicing ;)

I'll keep coming back for updates, great map. Thanks again!

There is a bug with the Tornado Tower when you upgrade it the Tornade from the lower tier tower doesnt despawn!

2things:

first, i played normal and got to lvl 40 or sth trying to get the periodic tower. After laughing out loud how much hp the essencetard had i cheated and placed focused light towers ALL OVER the map. it still needed 1 1/2 round to be killed? make that hp lower, rofl.

second, i was able to place as many periodic towers as i wanted after i killed the essence which is different from the original because if you built a tower that needed an essence the essence was used and therefore gone. you had to buy another in order to able to build another tower which needs essences.

Still, amazing job so far :)

just used the essence with a light tower. It's used now. Seems to be only with the periodic twr

Had a glitch with foundry towers not buffing nearby towers. Once I noticed that they stopped buffing I could no longer upgrade or sell the tower.


any utility tower like 'trickery, forge, well' can stop working and in some cases can't even be sold anymore when they stop functioning.
Though I couldn't figure out when they get bugged.

Not sure what is going on here. I'll try to investigate but I can't readily reproduce (never seen this in all my testing). Thanks for the heads up.


Sometimes, a tower seems to randomly stop attacking altogether. I'm not sure why this happens, but it is detrimental to the overall game experience. I can have them continue to attack by making them right-click an enemy, but it is very burdensome and I usually don't notice right away. It can happen with any type of tower, from what I've seen.

Edit: It happens the most with Witchcraft Tower—the one that casts maledict.

I have seen this before but am not sure what is causing it. I'm thinking it's more a problem with the engine and the sheer number of AI things it has to process at once but so far I have not fix for it.


I think there is a bug with life tower (Aluna) because it didn't add me any lives....
Played on all pick normal mode this time (if it matters)

The tower needs to get the killing blow to generate lives. If you have 50, the Tier 1 :alun: Life Tower needs to get 9 kills in order to add 1 life. Are you sure this was happening?


There is a bug with the Tornado Tower when you upgrade it the Tornade from the lower tier tower doesnt despawn!

awesome work crae! I played it often, i think the essenz is fine. He need one round to kill him, but that is not the problem.

Edit: i dont get mana if i kill the scouts. Is this on purpose?

I think that life tower was bugged... The 2. skill on the tower, isn't that a kill counter? I saw it getting many kills and when i had 50 lifes the counter never went higher than 2 (3. kill = counter/charges reset, right? ), when i was lower than 50 lifes it still didnt gave me a life when "resetting" the charges :)

how come when i try to join the game, the loading bar gets stuck. i tried doing ctrl + f8 and put startgame practice ETD map:elementtd allheroes:true but didnt work fix this please!

Pls, make a multiplayer version.
And instead of using tag ^b (text of this color is badly visible), use tag ^099 (text of this color is better seen).
Add to the interface_etdc_en.str the following words: Wave:, Next:, Lives:, and Elements. So they can be translated into other languages.

Bugs:
- The nearest Trickery/Mirage/Eidolan Tower stop working when near daying Essence.
- Soulcatcher Towers does not get lives for killing Scouts.
- Sometimes Minotaurs stuck into the corners and not moving.

theres a bug, if you have the devourier tower thing next to a trickery tower you keep the illusion permantly, i had around 50 devourers each doing 500 dmg each

Someone dropped a youtube link in a GD thread and I watched the vid, the guy was showing off this map and I was all... "HOLY BALLS!" Just by looking at that video I could see how good this map is. I have not download the map yet but I am going to do is right after I make this post.

i installed it, i made a game, but when it starts, it shows me the left corner of the map, freezes and then go full black and i can only see hp bars. i tried lowering graphics but it doesnt seem to fix it. any suggestions?

small maps have issues on hon for some reason, switch your graphics to openGL and it'll fix it, although not ideal its the only way.

also that freeze is normal
