As drops of Legion blood began to erupt from the crown of the Meatball over their latest kill, it was all she could do to control the howls of victory from her fellow Hellbourne. Teasing the gore-ridden current’s semi-viscous flow with her hand as it washed over the pulsating ball of flesh, she allowed tricks of her enemies life-force to splash over her smooth red skin, mouth and tongue. Silently hungering for more, she was nevertheless first to overcome the exhilaration, quickly hearing the vicious snarls of their latest champion’s return, the one she had supported for all these years and the one she knew would carry them to victory.
Letting some of the Meatball’s newly gotten blood trickle down from her mouth between her demonically ample features to trace a line to her navel she flew in the air flapping her bat-like wings to try and greet Warbeast. She could see at first glance that though he was transformed he was terribly injured. Protruding from his body were hundreds of bristles, an emerald arrow deeply embedded into his shoulder, his skin and fur were charred black as if something had tarred and burned him alive, and lastly the hilt of a sword barely visible was stuck deep within his side. He was heading straight for her, vicious rows of teeth like shards of broken glass and fire-lit eyes insatiably hungering for more. Roars of triumph were heard directed at him, but if he noticed he did not acknowledge them as he barrelled up the ramp and through two veterans of war, Moraxus and Accursed, knocking them flat on their backsides.
She knew he was out of control, but it did not bother her, as she quickly motioned with a wand that summoned a tornado to quell his rage until his transformation wore off. Amused at the discouraging comments towards Warbeast for knocking them over, she walked tantalizingly around the trapped hell hound as the fierce wind buffeted her hair and scantily clad garments. Her confidence was high, she knew how to tame him, trusting that nothing and no one could overcome the efficacy of her many charms. Unfortunately Warbeast’s charm was lost on almost all.
“Control that beast or I shall send him back to the depths of hell to watch our victory over the Legion, Succubus.” An angry, booming sound voiced from Accursed.
“Temper, temper, my beautiful dark knight. Your anger is focused in the wrong direction.” She said, back facing him.
“One Legion member is nothing, he was lucky to make it out of there alive, all he has proved is what stupidity looks like.”
Though he couldn’t see it, she scowled deeply at him, her red accented black eyes shifting to blue as she contemplated recourse. Deciding to not bother with such a pointless debate, she let Accursed’s words slide as the tornado began to subside. What was left was the twitching body of a daemonic biped struggling for breath that looked more like the burnt catman champion they had recently finished devouring for meal.
Walking over to him, smelling and hearing the fur sizzle, she reached down and grasped the hilt of the sword embedded into his collarbone. Its touch began to immediately burn her hand as she pulled the righteous sword from her darling creature’s side. Any Legion nearby would have their nerves racked at the savage feral howl erupting from Warbeast that echoed through the quiet night sky. She heard the clacks of a quadrupedal being approach.
“He has done well this night, Succubus.” A haunting echo-like being voiced. “I would not believe it if I did not see it.”
“You know what this is, Soul Reaper?” She questioned as she handed him the glowing sword.
“This sword burns to the touch with holy power. Its owner would not let this sword go unless it was taken from his corpse. It can only belong to one person. Jeraziah.”
Their tainted smiles erupted into even darker thoughts as Soul Reaper hoisted the sword that was smoking in his hands into the air and screamed with dark magical resonating evil, “JERAZIAH!” His voice was heard throughout their citadel and he was answered by even louder screams of excitement. Succubus could see warriors cheer who she had never seen cheering before, even mighty Maliken was smiling.
The celebration of the death of one of the Legion’s strongest was short lived however as a red ball of pure force knocked the sword from out of Soul Reaper’s hands. A silence ensued as the sword clattered to the ground, at the same time thunder and lightning began to fill the night sky. All Hellbourne eyes were now looking up confused at the whistling sound that seemed to sing louder than the storm brewing. Their eyes widened in fear as artillery shells appeared seemingly out of nowhere, dropping from the sky. The celebration quickly turned to roars of panic and outrage as many dove for cover.
Screams of “We’re under attack!” Echoed from the central tower as its infernal energies were being spent attacking waves of Legion fighters and ballista.
“Accursed, protect Warbeast. Bring him to the well to recover.” Hurriedly intoned Succubus.
“Help him? What good is he anymore?” Accursed spat.
“Help him to the well, or you will spend the rest of your days mesmerized by the squirrels who bury their nuts in the Legion jungle.” She gravely threatened.
With a loud grunt and a wave of his cauterizing sword Accursed shielded Warbeast before picking him up. Just in time as the sky exploded in electrical carnage as bolts of thunder crashed into each Hellbourne warrior. Accursed dropped Warbeast, racked, along with every other Hellbourne’s body, in agony.
“Get him to the well! Hurry!” was the first thing Accursed heard after the pain subsided, and before losing track of Succubus. Wanting to quickly return to the battle, Accursed double-timed it to the well.
Hearing. “I’M MORAXUS!” followed by a deafening quake that shook the earth under her feet, lead Succubus to the front lines where she met up with Soul Reaper. A massive fissure separated their entrance in two, already the corpse of Balphagore could be seen weighted into the earth, his hellfire minions crawling out of his pulped carcass.
She spotted the Legion retreat into the fog, but Moraxus, frenzied, cared less for sight, his lust for battle was too great. He attracted the barrier that made him so fearsome and charged ahead, shield glowing, axes flying. Succubus could see off in the distance other Hellbourne engaged on all sides of their defences were struggling to overcome the onslaught of the Legion, their loss of Jeraziah fuelling their actions.
“We do not know what lies beyond the darkness, all our wards have been extinguished, to charge after him could mean certain death.” Soul Reaper spoke.
“We do not have time to regroup, we must aid him.” She replied to her fellow warrior’s dismay.
They ran down the ramp while Soul Reaper chanted, soon after a withering presence could be felt and grateful was Succubus to not feel its bite. They reached the barrier of fog that entered into their forest but slowed as they heard animal chests heaving heavily up and down rushing towards their direction. Assumed ready, nothing could prepare them for the two emerald wolves that jumped out and attacked them, their bite sending waves of agony and slowing them in their tracks.
“He is in the forest to our left, do you see the green eyes?” Soul Reaper spoke quickly. “We must destroy him.”
“No. Let your emanation do its work, we must find Moraxus, we cannot let the Emerald Warden steer our course, he will only force you on his fighting terms.” They both agreed and made their way past the forest, constantly fighting against the Warden’s wolves that would not relent their attacks. They walked over craters where they could tell Moraxus had fought and saw one of the Legion’s Scout’s, its body impaled into a tree with an axe, and knew they were on the right track.
They increased their pace to run blindly in the fog seeing Legion after Legion slain or crushed by Moraxus’s onslaught for what felt like an eternity. They were stopped by a loud thunderclap and a howl that quickly grew in intensity until the figure yelling it crashed into the trees to their right. It was Moraxus, a hole burned cleanly through his skull. He crackled with blue energy in a death spasm. Looking back to the path from Moraxus’s explosive deathbed they saw through the cleared fog a being that sent alerts screaming in their heads. A mighty humanoid, more ape, walked casually towards the duo, his staff glowing brightly. He spoke.
“Demons. You have taken our saviour, but we will take back this land, and build a shrine to his honour. No hound of hell will stop us from accomplishing this justice.” The force of a hundred storms was then sent forth as lightning erupted from Thunderbringer, ploughing into Soul Reaper, knocking him and his infernal screams of pain far off into the distance.
Known for her fast thinking and quick charms, Succubus used this opportunity to dive to the side and come up, placing the powerful Thunderbringer under her hold. Her eyes flared blue as she taxed her will to crush her opponent’s emotional defences and self-control. Unable to move, Thunderbringer was stuck in a grimace that suggested fear.
“My you are a cute monkey, but all the power in the world will not stop you from my desires. We have been trapped for too long, Creature, and we intend to make this land of Newerth our new home. You cannot stop us.”
Frozen in a mental stasis, Thunderbringer could do nothing but drool as she closed on him. Teasing him, she brushed his lips with her claw like fingers, drawing a line of blood as her hold slowly took his mind away. Snaking her arms down his, she felt the lightly coloured fur reject her, nonetheless she let her hand reach out towards his staff, whose luminance coloured her skin a pearl white. As she consumed the life essence of the now collapsed and helpless Thunderbringer, she tried collecting the staff, but before she could, both Thunderbringer and his staff vanished. Perplexed and confused she looked around for any sign of what could have happened.
It felt like an eternity of seconds, but then all of a sudden she could see Legion warriors appearing in front of her one after the other. Thunderbringer standing proud in front of her, Emerald Warden, Bombardier and Behemoth flanking her. She began to run and made it five feet before a large javelin impaled her calf to the ground, trapping her.
“No demon, you will die here and we will ensure the safety of Newerthians once and for all.” Thunderbringer then began to chant, holding his staff high in the air he became a beacon as lightning and thunder shot into him. It began to wrap about him in incredible intensity. He began to lower the staff promising a swift and painful death, when for some reason the entire Legion seemed to stop, their breathing, their movements, even the electricity arcing about Thunderbringer stopped. Just stopped.
Succubus heard a warping sound as someone rushed to her side. She screamed as the unknown being pulled the javelin from out her calf.
“We must leave here and regroup. Maliken has said they have lost the northern barracks and need reinforcements.”
Not arguing in the slightest, Succubus let her newly found hero take her away. Looking back she swore she saw Thunderbringer smile.
“Until we meet again, Legion.” She spoke, blowing a kiss in Thunderbringer’s direction.
