TD;DR version: Hide MMR to reduce griefing and rage.

Background

This thread: http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?409420-I-m-done recently discussed hiding MMR since it mostly makes people negative - ending up in bad manners and bad gameplay as a result. People often get agitated when they see other people's rating and will change their way of playing because of this. Hiding MMR would hopefully make people just play their best without being negative towards a lower rated player in his/her team.

However

I want to be able to know my skill level. But there is no need for me to know down to a single point of MMR. That's why my suggestion is to show tiers instead. This way you won't rage if a player in your team is 1 tier below you - while in fact he perhaps is 150 rating below you - ending in a nicer environment.

TIERS:

My take on a tier system would be something like this:

Tier 1: 1850+
Tier 2: 1750-1850
Tier 3: 1650-1750
Tier 4: 1500-1650
Tier 5: 1376-1499
Tier 6: <1375

(not final, just a draft)

If you would lets say be in the Tier 4 span - instead of your MMR you would show Tier 4 in picking screen and in Statistics view.

Result

Result would hopefully be less rage-induced games, less egoistic plays (such plays appear if you consider your teammates noobs) and less griefing. ATM players chose their mindset depending on their team MMR matchup - which is just boring and reactionary.

IMO, just hide it entirely. MMR is only useful for fueling anxiety and rage on the player side. PSR, as a system, makes sense because the players need to see it to set up fair matches. MMR and stats viewed in matchmaking games are only frustrating because the players can't do anything about who they're stuck with. Hide it in matchmaking and keep it in public.

i dont think tiers would rly change anything, the higher tiers can still just grief/bully/rage/complain about lower tiers same as now with mmr. It would just make it slightly less specific.

There's literally no way (outside of a programming bug) that simply hiding MMR display would lead to longer ques and games...

This is false. The MMR would still exist but not be available to see. Therefore games would be matched just the same.

@WwD: With tiers, you wouldn't see a Tier 2 player rage just cause someone is Tier 3 in his team. Whereas you WOULD see him grief and rage if someone were 200 rating beneath him - though it's the same thing.

Even better...only you and your friends can see your mmr/stats (kills, deaths, assists, win, lose and so on). While everyone else can only see your wins.

The 'tier' system is just narrowing down ratings and grouping people distinctively. For instance, if I am tier 4 then I would most likely want to have tier 4 or better in my team, suddenly I have a a lesser view of people one tier lower than me. Its a system where you are literally making elitist shine while making people with lower rating being more of 'bad eggs'.

In the current situation, MMR difference in MM games is an issue for certain player depending on which level they are. Someone with 1300 MMR might not find it a big deal to have a team with significantly lower MMR because if you are in these brackets, chance are that you would not pay much attention to this kind of data before a game starts (please, don't check how abysmal my MMR is). Most people just stare at KDR. In another case, a 1800 rated player would be crossed to have, say, 1700 in his team.

My point is, narrowing down to just a few tier is not a so good idea. It just makes it easier for people to whine harder in game like "why the hell we have tier 4 in this tier 3 game???".

Bad suggestion. You should at least know if the odds are stacked against you. Not to mention, you know to focus on their best/worst players.

I don't understand how you think a grouped system is worse than the current system. It is a fact that a grouped system will lead to more situations where more players appear at the same level (tier).
In pretty much every situation in the tier system where someone would get mad at bads on their own team, the current system will have the same effect.

In the rare case where someone is barely in the higher tier, chances are if they trash talk their "lower" teammates they will lose and drop back down a tier like they deserve.

There may be a better way to rank players, but no matter if they see your MMR or not, people who will rage will find any reason to do so. Be it your name, score, how your are playing, if you can read their mind, decisions you make, or for something as silly as if you are online and they have the ability to communicate with you.

I agree with the idea of a better community. I would still prefer to see my mmr but if it would take the steam off ppl i would give it up in a second. The problem is that I think that "children will be children" and that you will have the same amount of flamers out there. A bad laning phase for a "child" will result in all the negative things you mention. It would be worth a shot no matter if it has a chance of success.

Else consider this thread which i think will have a higher probability of success for a better community: http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?416640-A-better-HON-community-and-how

Tier 6 is too big, other than that, great idea.
