Before the story begins, I would like to add that I wrote this just 2-3 days before this art contest was announced. You can see the original thread herre http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=405545. I thought it was interesting that an art contest was held for short fiction so soon after I wrote this for fun!
Enjoy!
The Chronicles of Newerth: Part I
Long ago in Newerth, the world was a peaceful one. Where others may have been used to violence, there was friendship. Where there was crime, there was generosity. Newerth was the home for peaceful and uplifting culture to thrive.
Then came the Hellbourne. These devious monsters wanted nothing more than to see Newerth crumble. Comprised of evil demons, succubi, and corrupted beings, the Hellbourne posed a tremendous threat. While the Legion fought them for control over their territory, they found that they were losing to brute strength. However, through clever tactics, the Legion discovered a weakness. They found that the Hellbourne had a knack for gambling. The Legion bet the Hellbourne that they could beat them in a strategic team vs. team battle.
The prize? Newerth.
Now, the Legion have been training for their ultimate challenge. The area agreed upon for this decisive battle is the Forests of Caldavar. Since violence and crime had no place in Newerth before the arrival of the Hellbourne, the Legion must rely on their bond to each other.
Chapter 1: Suŕi :pand:
"Stop!" Yelled Tano :hamm:. Tano wore a Viking's hat, wielded a large hammer, and wore ring mail armor. "Did ya hear that?"
The group stopped at once, listening for anything like a whisper that did not belong. The Forest of Caldavar was home to many strange creatures, like chiprel :chiprel: and squeye. Sometimes they could make noises that would trigger paranoia that the Hellbourne were near.
"It seems to be nothing," Jebbidiah :jera: said after a few minutes. He wore plate armor and held a sword and shield. Rumors had it that he could also command the light to mend deep wounds.
"We should keep moving," said Vixxen :andr:. She had a ghostly sort of voice that chilled Suŕi's :pand: skin. He had heard that she was valuable in that she could throw small comets at her foes.
"Suŕi," said Tano :hamm:, holding his large hammer with one hand, "What are ya waitin' for?"
"I thought I saw something over there," Suŕi :pand: said, pointing at the forest with his bamboo staff.
"If they wanna come, let 'em come. I'd like ta show them a thing or two!"
The group pressed onward through the thick forest. While none of them had ever been to Caldavar, they had studied the map before being pitted against the Hellbourne. There were armories that would help aid them in their path to victory. They figured if they could find an armory, they would gain an advantage.
Then, without a second notice, Suŕi :pand: saw the ground beneath Tano's :hamm: feet begin to slither. It seemed any roots that were once beneath the surface had been called to rise. Tano did not seem to notice. "Tano, look out!" Suŕi called to him.
But it was too late. In just a brief moment, the roots came to life and, like hands, grabbed tightly onto Tano's :hamm: ankles and legs.
In that instant, a booming crashing sound came echoing from the forest to their right. Suŕi :pand:, Jebbidiah :jera:, and Vixxen :andr:all turned to the massive sound. Suŕi saw that trees were being toppled, like an unstoppable bull was charging through them.
Then a monstrosity burst through the trees, sending limbs and trunks flying at the group. It looked nearly like a tree itself, with an evil intent :dead:. Suŕi noticed it seemed to be holding an entire tree in its hand.
It came barreling toward Tano :hamm:, the tree in its hand raised over its head. The roots were still grasping at Tano's ankles. "Jeb," Tano called, "Get ready ta heal me!"
The monstrosity :dead: threw its fist far behind it, and then flung it toward Tano :hamm: in a deadly punch. Suŕi :pand: guessed the punch would have knocked him across Caldavar had he not been held in place by the grasping roots.
A yellow light came crashing down on Tano :hamm:. Where the punch had made Tano spill blood, was now healed, and the tree monstrosity :dead: was seared by the light. It tumbled backwards, and the roots grasping Tano were released. He held his hammer over his head and, with the might of a thousand men, threw it at the creature. The force was so much that it seemed to be knocked unconscious.
Vixxen :andr: floated up in her ghostly way and hurled a blue comet at the creature. With that, it shattered into splinters and let out a woody gurgle.
Tano :hamm: walked to the pile of wood and picked up his hammer. "Good work, Jeb," he said, making sure he stepped on as many pieces of wood as possible.
"What was that thing?" asked Vixxen :andr:. Suŕi :pand: could feel goosebumps rise on his arms from the ghastliness of her voice.
"I'm not sure," said Jebbidiah :jera:. "But next time, we need everyone to lend a hand to defeating a foe." He turned to face Suŕi :pand:, and the others followed suit.
"Heh, heh, next time." Suŕi :pand: was well aware that he had offered no help. It wasn't his fault, though, because he wasn't feeling very positive. His trainer had taught him that Panda strength flowed from positivity. Being pitted in Caldavar against the Hellbourne had dampened his positive spirit. He felt unable to act.
"No time for this now," said Tano :hamm:, gripping his hammer tightly with two hands.
The group turned to see a creature vomitting corpses. It was fat, red, and demon-like :balp:, with small minions following it. Each one looked like it was breathing fire.
Think positively, Suŕi :pand: repeated to himself. Have a positive attitude!
Enjoy!
