The 2nd Annual HoN-iversary is almost upon us and we want your help in commemorating it with an art contest to rule all art contests. Its a 4 week long user-generated content contest powered by the HoN community and we're calling it the Newerth HoN-iversary Art Contest. We want to see our beloved community create some of the best HoN art we've ever seen across five distinct categories -- Video, Art, Short Fiction, Music, and Cosplay.
Five Category Breakdown:
Keep in mind that we're trying to focus on these five categories of HoN-based art and there will be some carry-over between each category. Use these guidelines to help spark your imaginations and get your creative juices flowing.
Video: Including, but not limited to gameplay, machinima, live action short films, music videos, etc. (Users must own the rights to all included content). Please keep this under 10 minutes in length.
Video Submissions Here (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/forumdisplay.php?f=257)
Art: Including concept art, graphic design, sculpture, desktop wallpapers, etc.
Your submissions should be in some way related to the 2nd HoN-iversary Celebration!

You can still view and edit you submissions as many times as you want until the submission deadline, so feel free to fine tune your submissions.
Deadline
The contest ends on April 27, 2012 at 11:59 pm EDT. Any submission made outside the deadline will not be accepted or judged as a part of the contest.

Contest Rules:
Each user may only submit one entry of their own work to the contest per category for a maximum of five entries into the contest.
Winners of this contest will be contacted via the email attached to their HoN account and announced publically on May 11, 2012.
You only qualify to win by posting a thread of your work in the corresponding threads above.
Given the media-centric nature of the contest, submissions may contain elements of each of the five categories, but all submissions must be related to Heroes of Newerth.
Users who make multiple submissions to the same category of the contest will be disqualified.
Users who submit the same work to multiple categories will be disqualified.
Users who submit any work other than their own will be disqualified.
Users who submit their work from an account other than their own will be disqualified.
Any known breach of copyright made without the copyright holder's permission outside of Heroes of Newerth will automatically result in disqualification.
Submissions must be made in full accordance with the forum rules and links to malicious content will result in a permanent ban of the connected HoN account and could result in an IP-ban.
Users who choose to participate in the contest do so willingly and understand that once their work has been submitted, he or she has agreed to give S2 Games the right to display that work publically, on e.g. our newsletters, website, or promotional video.

Unbiased my ass. Im sure anyone who does traditional drawing wont have a chance vs digital drawing.

If the traditional drawing is well done then why not? If you take a lopsided webcam screenshot of a sketch that probably won't do as good as a fully colored and scanned piece of art, traditional or digital.

Obviously we can use game shots in this, but how about game logos, IE the HoN logo in something? that is all allowed even though we don't own the copyright correct?
There is an optional theme of HoN's 2nd birthday - since this contest is in celebration of our 2nd anniversary. If that doesn't strike your fancy though, go nuts with anything HoN related!
Feel free to use the HoN logo/any part of HoN, but refrain from use of the S2 Games logo. On the topic of music, you don't necessarily have to make it - like you could get a buddy to make some for you, although there's only 1 winner - but please do NOT use copyrighted material.

I'm sorry, but you couldn't be more wrong. Digital drawing software, and a tablet for that matter, are tools, just like pencils, ink or paint on a piece of paper or a canvas. They are not magically going to help anyone draw better, they are most certainly not easier to use (anyone can hold a pencil and start drawing, whereas a tablet takes time getting used to first, as well as how the software responds to it). In the end, it takes just as long to learn to draw well using digital media as it does in traditional. Digital has many advantages, mainly in efficiency and for graphic work, but to actually draw with it's not in any way easier. The only reason why traditional work has more value is because it is more unique per definition, not because it takes more effort (not sure what you mean by effort anyway).

its your opinion and lets not start arguing again...i didnt said that are not tools but are by far easier to learn and to use.obviously you have never used traditional media like acrylics, oils etc...otherwise you would have know that traditional media they don't have layers, undo, brushes, textures, filters, effects adjustments and the list go on...which obviously digital is by far more easier and by effort i mean that in digital media if you make a mistake you simple erase correct it, or what ever. and also in traditional media you don't have brushes that magically create trees, building rocks or what ever you want.or delete them with one click. and how long it takes to get used to a tablet its not a valid argument.so lets not continue that argument. keep your opinion and i keep mine

The problem is that you present your opinion as fact, and that you make very, very false assumptions. I'm not afraid of discussions and do not see them as fights. I have worked with traditional media for many years before I went digital, also done plenty of acrylic work as a matter of fact, the last one only recently. In fact it is my belief that one can't really learn how to draw digitally well before they can draw traditionally; the tablet is only a hindrance in that case.
Just because you can create rock and tree brushes doesn't mean you get epic paintings with just a few clicks (not to mention that there are tons of special affects you can apply in traditional media as well). It takes tons of knowledge of composition, of color and light theory, of structural drawing, of perspective and if you're drawing characters into it of gesture and anatomy, before you can draw something truly good and that counts for digital as well as traditional media. You can go to any professional concept art or illustration site you want and they will tell you the exact same thing; digital is just another tool. It does not magically make you a good artist, and that is where many, MANY beginning artists go in the wrong very early.

i never said that is a fact, i said my OPINION, really am afraid of discussion? the last time i got a warning from moderator when i was arguing with you,so if you want to argue pm me, that's why i said it lets stop it ... stop assuming things and put words to others that they never said...and learn to understand what you read i said that digital media is easier than traditional media that's all. i didn't said that you can draw without knowledge, i didn't said that digital is bad or anything, i said that is easier to learn and to use as a tool than traditional media. any way i stop here i wont reply to you again in the general forum if you want to argue more pm me.

I said you present your opinion as fact. It has to do with the tone of your posts, which I'm sure is also why you got a warning. I'm not angry with you, there's nothing wrong with discussions. But I'm not telling you to grow up either. Not sure why you're getting this hostile.

I personally agree with Lhune, when I read your statement it sounded like you were mad that traditional artists have it harder than digital artists. Digital art is only slightly more convenient and is cheaper to maintain. It does not and will never pertain to anyone's level of skill and saying that anyone can learn digital art is an insult in itself.
It takes years of dedication to be good at any form of art, you can't just learn to be good, you can learn techniques but art is a steady blend of talent and technique, one without the other will surely never be as beautiful as it would be with both.
Digital art is not to Art as Guitar hero is to playing a Guitar. It isn't "fake" or "easy", it's not like your artwork is already predrawn for you when you open up a new canvas. In both cases you must start from scratch.
You can not just pick up a tablet and then instantly be as good as Jason Chan or S2 Games Aaron Holley.

Just to clarify, you can absolutely us the HoN logo or any other piece of HoN related branding - Heroes, Alt Avatars, etc. If it is solely and directly related to HoN and produced by S2 Games, you can use it in this contest and we'd encourage you to do so. We obviously want you to get creative and use your imagination in whatever capacity you choose, but we need to respect the copyright claims of others and give credit where it is due. If You or S2 Games did not produce the content in your submission, you should not use it unless you have explicit permission to do so.

LooLoo if i sounded mad which wasn't my intention is cause, its kinda annoying when people don't understand what they are reading and assuming things or put words that i never said, and rush to reply without understanding what they read...please point me where exactly did i said that digital art does not require skill or knowledge, or that can someone can draw or create something good instantly or the first time that will try?, i just said my personal opinion which was that as a medium digital is easier than traditional and that is because it gives you so many options and tools(undo, layers, effects, filters, brushes and so on) and at the same work in traditional would have needed much more effort and time. that's all

dkie, let me try to clarify this by quoting some of the things you said. I'm not putting words into your mouth, I'm just responding to things you said that sounded wrong to me. For example;
digital is easy mode comparing to traditional.
Implying traditional is far more difficult, not just that it takes more effort and time.
digital needs by far less effort to do anything and everyone can learn it which is not the same with traditional.
Implying not everybody can learn traditional? Or that digital is easier in every way?
i didnt said that are not tools but are by far easier to learn and to use.
How do you justify this? It's really just a matter of preference. A tablet is not at all easier to use than a pencil or a brush, and neither is Photoshop easier to figure out than mixing paint and trying out brush effects irl. It pretty much comes down to what you're used to and what you prefer.
obviously you have never used traditional media like acrylics, oils etc..
You don't know anything about me or what I do; as said I use traditional media regularly, for studies and recreational work mostly, because I don't always have my tablet with me or don't always feel like using it. It comes off as rather offensive to just make such assumptions about people, you know. I don't think I was being offensive to you in any of my posts, I don't actually have any beef with you. I'm just saying, you seem to be making rather big statements that aren't based on much; I've been around on major art sites like ConceptART and CGHub for quite a while now, and everything I have seen, read and heard contradicts what you are saying here.
If you meant to say that digital art is more efficient, I'd definitely agree. You get less paperwork, you don't have to buy as many tools and it's easier to re-use and reproduce (parts of) previous works. But it doesn't always cost less time at all (for example, this (http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/9860/yan1h.jpg) takes Henry Yan about ten minutes), it depends so much on style, on purpose and on preference.
Anyway, if a mod feels like this is inappropriate feel free to remove it and I'll PM it to dkie instead. I just felt the need to clarify this in public in answer to our string of posts, for the people who were keeping track of them.
Jenova26

Concur with Lhune. Though dki does bring up a good point in that layering, undo, and deleting does give digital media a clear advantage.
This of course does not discount digital media in any way as the traditional understanding of brush on paper has to exist prior to a digital transition to master the tool, if for no other reason than having the foresight to turn blank canvas into comprehensible art.
That being said, I feel like you two are both agreeing with each other and don't even realize it.
Lhune
03-30-2012, 04:37 PM
Perhaps we are, I just felt the need to clarify this in case people did misread his posts and start thinking that digital art is the easy road to making impressive art. I know that sounds silly, but I have literally seen countless of artists doing this on deviantART, in that they bought a tablet and got themselves digital art software and were then immensely disappointed by how ugly their art would turn out. This happened to myself too at first, but then I never thought it would work wonders for me; people had already warned me that digital media would take time getting used to and that I would simply have to continue studying just as I was in traditional media. That's the message I'm trying to send to others here.

For the art section can we design a new hero or concept for an alt? Or does it have to be of something already made?
As far as I read, it would include anything hon related. So you could create new heroes. They somehow should fit the hon style though.

The entries are private to allow the judges of the contest to do their job without bias and outside influence. If entries were public, then the judges wouldn't be able to give everyone a fair chance to win. With the entries private, we can also help people submit their work. If someone is trying to enter the contest, we want to be able to communicate with them in the event that they run into difficulties submitting their work - That's why we have you create thread to enter. Once the contest ends and the winners have been announced, we will open the submission forums to allow everyone to see everyone else's hard work.
who do i contact if i have questions regarding the video contest?
and how do i prove i have copyrights for using certain audio part? by not getting sued?
I would be the best person to bring your questions to. Feel free to continue posting in this thread or PM me if you prefer.
In terms of proving copyrights, you are always obligated to respect the copyright claims of others. There are resources out there that will help you find "free music" or music that falls under a creative commons license. If you absolutely must use music or sounds that are not directly from HoN, then that would be the best place to start looking. If you use someone's music with their consent, then you need to be able to prove that you have their consent to use it. Music under a creative commons license will have public documentation that will prove this. In addition you should always give credit to the creator and provide a link to music or sound clips from external sources in the description of your video. The ramifications for using music you don't own the copyrights to is usually only going to result in some form of a cease and desist order made on behalf of the copyright holder, which will result in your video being muted and stripped of all sound. These are all extreme circumstances, but blatant disregard of copyrights is serious business. Sampling sounds from external sources is an entirely different legal affair, but for the sake of this art contest, it really depends on the type of the sample to tell you whether or not you would be OK to use it legally. If there is any question about whether or not you should use copyrighted music or sounds, I urge you to do some additional research on what defines a creative commons license, what determines whether music is "free music", and what copyright protection means when it comes to sampling and creative endeavors such as this contest.
Great contest, looking forward to the results :)!
A question on the Music side, am I allowed to use HoN game sounds/character voices in a song? Tnx a lot and good luck to everyone!
You can definitely use HoN music and any sound found in the game. Feel free to do so in anything you create for this contest, especially if you're making a song.

Wow, she's really good. Is that all done in colored pencils?
Also side note, there seems to be a bunch of art/short stories but zero music entries. Where are all those sound engineers that play HoN? At this rate I might mess around in fruity loops, and submit something in that category too.
I'm slacking on my art/short entries, been sketching my Diablo 3 art contest entry (http://reveal.diablo3.com/en_US/art_contest/#!/gallery/most_recent). Pretty convenient that they're both at the same time.

Users who submit any work other than their own will be disqualified.
Any known breach of copyright made without the copyright holder's permission outside of Heroes of Newerth will automatically result in disqualification.
I have a question about these rules right here, does that mean anyone can just ask a great artist to use his painting for a contest and if that person agrees,
you could just paste his great art next to some newerth concept art and call it a wallpaper? (Happened a lot in an earlier contest if i'm not mistaken.)
Also, traditional art has a way better chance to beat digital art if it's good, it's way easier to raise textures, cool effects, etc. with traditional.
Great trad' artist who could kick any digital artist's butt; http://www.jeremygeddesart.com/paintings.html

Sigh, again, no. While I don't know how those running the contest are going to judge, I seriously doubt traditional will have any prevalent advantage over digital and the other way around. Both are just tools, both have their own effects, their own advantages and disadvantages. You can't judge a piece of artwork based on what tools were used, you judge it based on how well it was done and thought out.
While Jeremy Geddes is a really, really impressive traditional artist, I don't think you know many great digital artists if you think he could blow any of them out of the water. Of course it all depends on the look you prefer, but there are plenty of mainly digital artists out there who would rival Geddes in terms of technique and skill. Just a few for example; http://algenpfleger.blogspot.com/ , http://www.hgjart.com/gallery.asp , http://www.artsammich.blogspot.com/ , http://www.artoflevi.com/.

Yeah, you're right. That was quite a stupid way of putting it, I just find it really annoying when people say that traditional art doesn't have an equal chance in contests, challenges, artistic technique in general and I did really make it sound like I felt it would in some way be easier to win with traditional artwork. So, excuse me for that.
Also, irrelevant, but I do think Jeremy could best all of those mentioned when it comes to realism within art. ;)

It's okay, I didn't really want to start another one of those discussions either haha, it just sounded a bit odd to me. Geddes specializes in photorealistic surrealism, so he's kind of supposed to beat them in that area ;). Though Hannes (algenpfleger) gets pretty damn close. As far as understanding of light, color, structure and composition goes though, all of the artists listed really are masters of the trade.

The 2nd HoN-iversary is an implied subject for this contest for you to focus on in anything you create for the ART portion of this contest. While in the thread you had mentioned, we were fielding planning ideas for the anniversary event itself, we didn't mean to suggest that our judgement of this contest will be affected by it. The relation of your work to the subjects contained in the "planning" thread will not be a deciding factor in the way your work is judged. We are simply asking the most passionate members of the HoN community to have some fun and celebrate our 2nd HoN-iversary with us through this contest.

You can by all means post your video to your personal YouTube channel. Actually, the simplest way to enter into the contest is to post your video to your YouTube channel and link the video URL in your submission :)

For those of you who started working on your art before we made our edit to the contest, we wont disqualify you for creating something that is not related to the HoN-iverary. If you are submitting your own quality work that appears to have taken a lot of forethought and time on, we will definitely consider your work for prizing.
Ok i've done a video right, how do i post it on the thread, through a youtube link? and wouldn't that cause a loop hole for people just pasting other people's work. thanks.
Please post your videos using a link from youtube or other trusted video hosting site. We are trusting that you submit your own work. Don't post a video if you didn't make it!

We do not want people submitting work that is not their own. Everyone deserves a shot at winning this contest for their own hard work and we discourage any abuse of those terms. Also, we like both Traditional Art and Digital Art here at S2 :)

Well, if your video is taken down due to copyright claims, that usually means that a copyright holder filed a complaint or requested that the content be taken off of the service because it was posted without their consent. Just because your video was not taken down and no copyright claim was issued does not necessarily mean that you have the copyright holder's permission, it just means that YouTube was not informed that a breach of copyright had taken place. Unfortunately if you don't have the copyright holder's permission, then you don't have the right to post that content.

Hi guys,
For those of you wondering when the winners will be announced and suchforth, it now says on the front page:
"Winners of this contest will be contacted via the email attached to their HoN account and announced publically on May 11, 2012."
Just so you know! Good luck to you all ♥

So you get an email saying you won on the same day it's publically announced you won? Seems a little bit redundant.
LooLoo

The way it's written makes it sound like the winners are being emailed at any time now and then on the 11th the public will be informed.
But I think it was intended as on the 11th people will be emailed AND announced publicly.

It can't effect who wins and it won't make a difference if the artists see what everyone else did, as the deadline is already over.

So being excited about the announcement of the winners is a bad thing? This is a contest, it's supposed to be exciting!

I've got to say I agree with Sye. Be excited by all means, but posting in the topic every 10 seconds saying the same thing isn't gonna reveal the winners any sooner. It's only a week! Play a MM game and chill (:

I was basically saying that we will not reveal everyones work before the contest stops, just as promised.

Eh, it's not like bumping this thread is doing any harm when it's tucked away in it's own section. Though the questions may all be the same, to me it's just showing that it was a fun event and that the posters are really keen to see who won, thus showing their support for a contest such as this. :)

Rofl...TBH I only posted an entry to the art contest because I was under the false assumption that no one else has submitted anything. My picture looks like stick figure 2.0, while fun to draw there's no talent there. The music contest I am sort of curious about though since I worked hard on that. Were there many submissions? Also: The contest IS over in regards to submitting, so why not allow us to see everyone else's work? I can accept not revealing the winners right now but there is no reason to keep everyone's light hidden in a basket.

Yeah, it would be cool to see the other submissions but I guess it's all in suspense at the moment.
As far as how many entrants there were, you can assume the amount of threads in each section = the amount of entrants.
Same as me, I saw 2 cosplay threads and was like, hm, all I have to do is make any old cosplay to win so I submitted something kinda average heh.
What are the amount of views we have on our submissions? Was kinda curious about that. I have 21 on one and 29 on the other.

That's not true! Everyone's submission counts, and I know for sure when it's for public view that I'll be looking at everyone's entries. :)
Also, there's no pressure about saying how many views you had, as said I was just curious about it and when everyone is unveiled I'll probably be sleeping so I won't be able to see what the base views are. D: plus to be fair quite a few of my views are myself looking at it again because I like to go over things I do after a few days of not seeing it.

Well, im very disapointed cuz it doesnt matter how good or creative your work was, it looks like wer not going to beat "professional works" at any point, its sad, very sad, but its true, some people can't create semirealistic enviroments or stuff like that, but sometimes, creativity deserves to be mentioned, i dont know if i sound selfish or something, but, i think S2 should consider to make a "Honorable mentions" for "non professional works" for this anniversary, becasue there is a lot of more good stuff there to, well with nothing more to say.. congratulations for the winners, i was really impresed with cronos statue,
P.D. plz dont think im complainign at any point, just saying my point of view, care...

Well, I never expected to get a prize! I had intended to spend a decent amount of time writing a story entry, but due to University projects, I ended up coming up with the story idea and writing it in the few hours before the deadline, so wasn't particularly hopeful. Glad that I managed to pull off a runner up though! Might start doing some more writing for HoN - and actually take time to flesh it out more. Not having a word limit will help as well haha.
Congrats to all winners!
