View Full Version : Decent Headphones for Gaming and Music

Hey guys,

So I think it's about time I got my hands on a decent pair of headphones. I'm wondering if any of you could help me decide and throw a few ideas and potential headphones at me.

PLEASE NOTE, I do not want a "headset". That means NO microphones please. Microphones up the cost and add weight and size to the headset, something I'm not interested in.

What I intend to use the headphones for...
- Playing Games,
mainly HoN, but also BF3 and CS:S,
therefore I want headphones that are comfortable for extensive use and with a reasonable ability to hear and know the direction of my opponents when playing BF3 and CS:S.

- Listening to Music
I'm not necessarily after headphones with amazing quality for music, most of the music I listen to isn't really "bass-y" so amazing bass isn't required. I much prefer good clarity.

In terms of price range, I live in Australia so headphones tend to cost a little more due to postage (despite our strong dollar value). I'm looking at headphones around the $100 to $250 mark.
Brands I've been looking at so far are Steelseries, Sennheiser and Audio Technica.

Any help or advise is greatly appreciated, hopefully I get a response or two, not really expecting any.

Thanks guys.

I would recommend Steelseries Siberia v2. It's pretty good imo.

Seriously considering Audio Technica AD700's heaps of people rate them much better than Siberia v2's.

Siberia v2's > any headset I've ever had, apart from Steelseries 7hv2

Literally every time I type in Siberia v2 vs AD700 the AD700's come out on top :o.

Guess that's because the one is 150€ and Siberia is 80€.

Siberia is a headset and AD700 is headphones. Big differences between both. ;)

The AD700 is probably going to have better sound quality, but is also nearly double the price (at least for me), and has no microphone. I'm using the Siberia right now, it's comfortable and I seriously can't complain about the microphone/soundquality. It is probably the best headsets/headphones I've had for under 100€.

For me they're the same price in Australia, AD700 is $127, Siberia V2 is $135.
If buying from international sellers I could get the Siberia's cheaper, but I'm not keen on doing so.

And like my original post says, I'm not interested in microphones.

That's pretty damn ****ing expensive.

One thing you should know about the AD700 - they are not closed. They won't sight tight on your head and just stay there.

You should probably take a look at

Sony MDR-RF4000K (wireless)
Sennheiser HD 558
Panasonic RP-HC 700

The sennheisers look promising but the $215 price tag isn't that appealing.

No worries. It's always strange with items costs in Australia... An item can be twice as much as another in UK and both be the exact same in Australia... So whack.

Just bought a pair of Sennheiser PC 333D

Theyre pretty awesome, the sound is amazing!

You are talking about headsets right? Not just headphones?

There is one answer. Audio Technica M50. A little more on the pricey side, but they are simply the best all round headphones (little bass heavy). If you want a headphone that is better sounding, but immobile and less comfortable, then Shure SRH440's are the way to go.

ATH M50 is about $180 ASD whereas the Shures are about $100. If you get the Shure's, try and get the SRH840 ear pads. The 440's are garbage.

http://headphones.com.au/ This site is the cheapest I have found for Aus, and free delivery to boot.

Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 ohm apparently better than Audio Technica M50, and the same price here.

Doublepost but whatever - I just received my DT 770 pro 250ohm

Tried them first on my laptop which has shitty onboardsound - and wow. Just wow.

It is incredible. Such a big difference.
Then I hooked those badboys up to my PC with a okayish soundcard (ASUS Xonar DG), it has a headphone amp - and it was even more awesome. People saying 250 ohm needs a headphone amp just to be loud enough are wrong.

But yea, it's just.. wow. Can't really describe it.
