Last night I had a game as soulstealer that was going horribly wrong. I was struggling to get last hits (was laning top - torturer had mid vs tbringer) then I had 2 deaths fairly close together and dropped to like 6 souls.
Due to the pressure in top lane and my current weak soul count I was advised to go jungle to raise it. Unsure of how this would work I bought an iron shield with the +6 agil and went and got pwnd bigtime by creeps even with the shield.
Now obviously the idea of SS is you can clear a creepwave in 2 demon hands and give yourself +5 souls right there, but are there any circumstances you should jungle to get souls? I could see maybe clearing the snotter camp as its 5 quick souls for 1 spell and some swings. But is it safe to say SS has no business fighting minotaurs etc?

Torturer should have gone top, not you.

Depends, he cant jungle before, lets say, lvl.6-10 (depending on what you farmed so far). however he can neutral creep actually very good if you get the apropriate items, ie. whispering helm, and maybe a +6 agi shield, as should have high damage by then -->good life steal, and his hands, well, they deal quite a bit damage too
BUT, without life steal and some lvls and some hp, he cant. he isnt legio/tempest

Shouldn't ever have to really. Don't play soulstealer if you dont go mid.

This. He dual lanes awfully.
Jungling can work with some mana though if you need to top off on souls after a death or something (or if you need a bit more money). Flat jungling will not work. If you want to try it, get a Helm of the Black Legion (gasp! never seen that on him) instead of Bracer stacks to fix your HP problems.

imo soulstealer is the hero who has the highest mid priorety. So he should always be there :)
He's not even a fantastic mid hero either though, I like him as a hero but I don't think he fills a massive niche.

should prob take a step back and think about how it is that he is so strong mid then perhaps retract that statement

Actually he's a pretty amazing mid hero. Once his Soulsteal gets rolling he can out-hit anybody, and his animation is really good. Furthermore he has excellent harass with Demon Hand, which doesn't even require sight. Lastly if the enemy gets cocky, a double or triple Hand is almost a surefire kill early (and it's not hard to pull off.) He fills a niche as a secondary initiator, soft carry and nuker. If you need a ranged hero to add more damage to your team - ie. you already have a melee carry, stunners and support - Soulstealer is a better choice than heroes like Moon Queen, IMO. His farming ability also can't be denied.

Only time you should be jungling on SS is:
1. You just died and you have 15 souls, go to the yellow camp and get 3-5 souls(depending on what spawned)
2. You are going to gank someone in the top/bot lane and instead of being idle, twiddling your thumbs, you go and make some money/XP.
3. You're close to a level or item and you need 150-200 gold.
I can't think of any other reason.

This. More sophisticated version of what I said.

From my experience pubbing, he's not that bad in a dual lane. Combine him with a stunner and you have a very deadly lane at level 5. The only real problem comes up when the enemy has a powerful lane that will kill a squishy SS before level 5, though maybe that describes all of the lanes in a typical competitive match.

Here is a fpvod of SS bein played very well. You can see he does jungle from time to time when he is on the way to another lane / coming back from a gank. You can take any spawn easily, just hand them 2 or 3 times and they are all dead. Works very well if they are already stacked too.
