View Full Version : Hon models in 3ds max

Is there anyway to view some models in 3ds max? Im doing a hon themed character and would like some reference on poly count and edge flow. If I learned these things I think I could make some pretty savage avatars.

EDIT-
Nevermind

For some reason I decided to do little investigation before posting on the forums. For anyone else interested in exporting the original s2 models from the game for their own fun can do so using 3ds max 2011 or 3dsmax'12 and Blender. See Quzzap's post, number 14, on the directions for an export through Blender for 3ds max with animations here (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showpost.php?p=13335935&postcount=14).

there's a plugin in the op for 3dsmax 2011, which can still be downloaded from students.autodesk.com, or if you arent a student, any pirating host. The plugin is here (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showpost.php?p=13272682&postcount=1).

More searching into blender found some blender import AND export scripts! BAM (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=65940)

Hope this makes somebodies day as good as mine

So despite unanswered PMs and a totally silent community I have figured out how to extract models and textures directly from hon. Heres a fayde in 1920x1200 including textures, spec maps, and super high res normals.http://i42.tinypic.com/vijjw0.png

s2 actually zbrushes all of their hero models to produce hi res ambient occlusion, normal maps, and spec maps. I just took their models and textures from the resource archives and put them together in 3ds max, and of course added some pretty lighting for the hires render that took 3 hours above -.-http://i44.tinypic.com/2po6sm8.png

I was a little surprised that s2 models with editable mesh instead of polys, but i guess since the models are so low poly; deformation isnt a concern for animation.http://i43.tinypic.com/122jcyh.png

I guess thats just because noone loves to answer the same questions for 2 years answers to which may be easily found.

You get blender scripts referenced in first google result for "hon model import"
They were available since early 2010.

So basicly you could edit models from HoN since I have quite some experience in 3Dsmax.

theli ?? so now you post here? a private message is about as intrusive as popping a zit on your ass when youre taking a ****. im sure your life is so damn busy you cant help someone asking your help directly, especially when its a serious student. Thanks and please do all of us a favor and FO

but yes the information was easy to find, but I was just a wee baby.
Never used blender before, never touched the s2 archives, never used scripts!
No wonder this community is so blatantly full of **** and just offensive. Its because the people who were here first, YOU, are no better than the *******s coming in. You sir are perpetuating this communities stupid ass cynicism.

But thank you everyone else!!! Its actually really fulfilling when you figure it out and add some colored kicker lights and key lights in the scene.

3ds isnt hard, the program actually has a help file that beats most peoples' books asses. if youre really interested in learning the program, open it up and just mess around. F1 is help. You can check out every hotkey under the customize pulldown, as well as change them. There's a lot to know but too much for one person. Ive had the benefit of learning it from a professional but in hindsight, if i wouldve just messed around in it for a couple months building stuff from reference, like a fire hydrant or a tollbooth, the learning curve would be almost the same. The key is knowing the tools you need and not being afraid of them, when you have that, your passion can really show in your work.

this is really weird way of telling "thank you for all the hard work you put into making this possible" you have here

guess you'd be surprised on how less free time you'll have once you get fullday job, wife, kids, etc
even though i try to answer all the questions about chat protocol/file formats/etc i get in my pm box (not "zomg i want your help contact me asap" questions though)

oh, and I'm not sure why you so mad at me since i never had any PMs from you, though i wouldnt helped you anyway since i know nothing about 3ds and know much less than any "blender quickstart tutorial" about blender since i'm programmer, not an artist

good luck irl with such attitude young man

I actually am sorry about what I said, I was feeling triumphant. Sorry theli, your scripts are nice. Though scripts for 3dsmax would be more appreciated, blender is such a pain in the ass. Without theli none of this would be possible. Tell your family that their dad is a hero among creeps.

well, it would be a pain for me to set up 3ds in linux just to port scripts
(and I plan to port scripts to recent blender versions for almost a year T.T)

Though, tbh I am really surprised noone still ported those scripts to 3ds since model/clip formats are much more simler than wc3/wow/sc2 ones

I guess there is just no real need for import scripts (like the only use cases i can see are renders/changes )

And btw, nice render you have here, I really suck when it comes to setting up the scene/lights/camera/proper material :(

Oh, and they say blender's 2.5/2.6 is tons more user-friendly than 2.4

The render took 2 hours with final gather maxed, with 3 mental ray lights(a white omni, a warm green key light, and a cold red kicker) with a 2048 shadow map size. 8D

I saw you were going to port the scripts somewhere, lol, and i also found the ported import scripts for version 2.5 but didnt want to mess with something that wasnt made by you. And yeah, 2.49 is basically awful, but works fine enough. I guess ill give 2.5 a try when I get a break from school.

Boltzen, Im currently creating a visual guide of the process and the screen cap method is proving to be slow going because of the intensive and very particular nature of the process. I should be done by tomorrow or the next day. Ill create a new thread in modifications walking through the steps. This way my journey will be described not to just one person but the whole forum.
Thank you for your interest btw :D

Wow im sorry its taken so long for me to get back on the forums. Animating is extremely difficult man. You are going to need bones, and ik solvers. Think of bones as human bones and ik solvers as ligiments and joints. Its very easy to screw up the bones so that they dont move correctly. Be sure to watch multiple tutorials and i would recommend getting your hands on a few of the gnomon workshops for modelling, texturing and animating in 3d. Gnomon is the best.
