View Full Version : ♥ From which S2 member did each hero's gameplay design concept come from?

ElementUser
12-16-2011, 10:51 PM
This thread will be the archive for which hero's gameplay design concept came from which S2 designer!

Disclaimer: All the designers influenced the final results of the heroes, so no single designer is responsible for each hero.

S2 has a group / community oriented design methodology. There is no single person responsible for any single hero. A hero's initial design usually comes from a single source, but the final product is through mass input and iteration from multiple people.

Yes this belongs in Mechanics since it's not suited for any other subforum without getting buried.

Please let me know if there are any mistakes/heroes I missed so I can update them accordingly.

NOTE: No discussion of whether certain heroes are "broken/imbalanced" or discussing whether that hero was good/bad for the game.

The only discussion that's allowed here will be that concerning the accuracy of the list.

Monkey king is Nome's (he's what harlequin turned into)
Empath and Ra are Nome's (he talks about them in his blog)

Cthuluphant is Diva (I think nome said this in his AMA on reddit)
Moraxus is Diva

I remember idejder talked about panda a lot before he was released but he was the most vocal s2 member back then so I'm not sure if it's his hero.

So basically Idedjer makes the most op heroes because old engi was stupid... for all of those who dont know what im talkinga bout, you could buy any procc item like lightning on engi and win because of that, what u did was go into a teamfight, ulti, drop turret, tinker the turrt ( it buffed its damage and it gave it bullet regen) cuz he had like 12 bullets... anyways u stunned with keg and u tped back to base, start dancing like moon and you would hear ANIHILATION... It got to the point where the best counter to engineer was mass barbed armours.
Engineer old build was steams, lightning, nullifire, frostwolf, savagemace and if u wanted a pkey.

Like seriously, his turret was 1000000 times his mines atm, you could randomly drop that **** in their forest and it would stay there, it would die after several hits but once u had lightning that **** would kill 1-2 heroes without it being tinkered... Ohh and tinker could be used on enemy tows and friendly... he used it on his tow u couldnt push for ****. he used it on ur tow it was worse than bulwark... and it slowed its aspd... xD His ulti was the same but they changed some numbers to it.... they first nerfed it then buffed it after thy got rid of turret...

Seriously the 2 most op heroes in hon were chronos and engineer. and if engineer casted turret before chronos casted his ultimate it was game over... and if chronos caught engi engi could still be saved with tablets and stormspirits xD lol it was so imba.:Genjuro:

Not trashing Fielding or anything, but he wasn't some sort of wizard. During his developmental stages of HoN the game was less difficult to balance due to it's tiny hero pool. They probably even let some overpowered heroes sit untouched because they planned on releasing more counter heroes. Also who developed original Kraken?

Although this is at the Mod's discretion, there is a balance dump thread in balance. Mechanics dump would still be best if kept 'relevant' - my point about going to GD is this is not the place for that discussion; it simply is not welcome here.

Who was responsible for the initial conception of Gravekeeper?

One of his skills is directly taken from a hero DrPeckers designed in Hero Drafts... kinda interesting how minds think alike without almost no contact.

Is Fielding still in the "hero creation" team over at S2? I loved/still love his heroes.

Can you organise the list to show who's still working on heroes and who's not? (Move Nome to the bottom or something etc)

Cool list, Buro is where its at! Diva I have some love for you too

Also....

omg.......Nome was the worst developer, he made all the dumbest heroes. Its like he created broken/annoying heroes on purpose to kill HoN so he could move to Riot and make bank....I bet Riot had him on the payrole months before he even left...and his guides are bad as well....Nome conspiracy anyone?

I agree that his guides were bad (and are still infamous in my circle of people I play with) but his heroes were well designed for the most part.

Nomad has excellent flavour and is really fun to play. Just all the sounds and the way he moves is right.
Midas is cleverly designed and the gold theme really shines in the effects and the way everything flows together.
Lord Salforis is one of my favourite heroes and an excellent niche pick in some situations.
And Gauntlet is my most played hero due to how much variety Grapple provides and the stuff you can do with him. He is also one of the only true Anti-Carries in the game.

I'd have to agree with pretty much all of this. Nome didn't "ruin" the game nor did he create a surplus of bad heroes. Most of his heroes are actually pretty neat. Ra's design of damaging himself with a passive heal based on damage he takes. Gauntlet is sick, his redesign made him an anti-carry all the way. Midas is really cool too - even with his nerf, I'm still a fan of him.

Do you guys come up with the visual design mid way and get some inspirations for skills from it(like Nomad)? or the skills first and try to find a visual that fits into the set? Which one happens more often?

I'll just put the future heroes' full names since the forum icons aren't getting updated on a regular basis.

That's where I come in. Updated OP so all icons show with the exception of Prisoner 945 due to him not having a proper icon yet.
