I am having a hard time discerning between the items needed and the items I think are useful for my character, which could be the worst thing I pick.
Before we go any further, let me explain that I did NOT play DotA but I have over 300 games of League of Legends under my belt, so I understand the basics more than someone who would just boot this up for the first time.
Now, because I did not want to put anyone in the position of babysitting me or being gimped for having me on their team the only games I have played so far have been practice with no one else in them because, as I said before I have no idea what to get for someone like Jeraziah, so I would sit there for minutes at a time trying to figure out what would be better for him. I also fully understand that you need to tailor your hero pending what you're facing (magic user=magic resist items, physical damage=armor)
What I am asking for, if possible, someone to invite me to a practice game, being fully aware that I will be a handicap until I properly figure it out.
I have vent, can download skype and so on.
Thank you for your time and sorry about the wall of text.

Most of them time you can just look at the recommended items and pick a couple of things from there.
Otherwise this thread is quite good for some basic hero builds, just pick a hero after you've looked at a guide or look at the guide after picking a hero.

The best thing you can do on most heroes is get 2x fortified bracers (you do not get the respective AGI or INT on most heroes because the health bonus from fortified's is so usefull early on)
Then one of enhanced marchers (for characters that auto attack more than others) or steamboots (most important on casters)
After these items you will want to look at your "main" item, which differs from character to character, but your generally looking at an item which you build up over the next 20 minutes or so, and usually costs between 3000-5000 gold.
But you cant really go wrong with 2x fortifed, boots, main item. All you have to do is look at the guides on this forum for which "main" is best. Of course tehre are exceptions, and many people do take (for example) soulscreams over fortifieds, but fortified bracers are always good. Something else you may consider is swapping one of the fortifieds for a power supply (i do this on every hero, every game).
This would mean you have 1x fortified and 1x power supply. This means your sacrificing 3 STR (60 hp ish) but gaining the ability to regen HP and MANA from the charges. Also because the item uses 2x minor totems, its very good to buy the components form your starting 600, this will give you decent starting stats and a way of regaining some mana/hp.
Hope that wasnt too confusing:/ To recap:
A: Starting items (usually wont change from hero to hero): Minor totems, health potions, runes of blight, maybe a part from the fortified bracers/power supply
B: 2x fortified bracers / 1xpower suply + 1x fortified bracer
C: Boots (steamboots for casters, marchers for everyone else)
D: Main item (look to guides for best from hero to hero)

GMT+1 (Greenwich Mean Time + 1) and PST+1 (Pacific Standard Time + 1) are not the same. Mountain time is GMT-6.
I'm sure plenty of people in TGM would be willing to help you out. Send a whisper to myself or one of the other officers for an invite.

Perfect, this has cleared up a lot of questions in concordance with the guide link posted above.
Much thanks to all of you.

Dude for now I guess the best thing to do is just read posts in forums. It would really help a lot and also play practice games. Just buy random stuff and test it. Also you might wanna watch replays.

Yea the way i learned heroes is just to pick a hero, then alt tab and find a guide on them for the basic skill build/ item build. (stick to the premium guides for at least your first 5 heroes, by that point youl have a good understanding of the game and can probabaly manage without a premium guide, if any)
Then once i'd tried them out start to read a bit more in depth to find out all the nasty combos.
But the build system isnt that intuative.
The addition of "recomended items" has helped. But i really think they could do with a system where you (for example) go to the shop and select "support build" "offensive build" and it reccomends an item string for you.
I know people should want to work out combos for themselves, but at the end of the day, with guides as available as they are, and with the rough #cough# nasty #cough# attitude that the community often has to newbies, getting them on the right track from the first game, i think, is the way to go.

Read guides on what heroes you want to know item builds, or I guess you can PM me specific questions on what heroes you need clarification.
