View Full Version : Does playing dota make you better at hon?

Got in the dota 2 beta last week, played the heck out of it. Came back to hon cause I needed a change and I have been unstoppable since. I don't know if it is the change in delay I just feel like I am playing better.

Many skills are transferable between the two games, so yea, basically.

at the very least it gives you a new perspective.

not really
at the beginning the people that came over from dota obviously had an advantage over the completely new players, but no, playing DotA or Dota 2 does not help your HoN skills. Actually, you can get quite rusty if you leave for a relatively long time.
If you really feel like you're better after playing dota 2 who knows, it could be the change of pace (dota 2 is slow as ****, the team with the better hard carries wins every game, etc.)

I doubt it.

the quality of the average game in Dota2 is pretty close to the dumpster, if anything it makes you worse imo
Unless you are really badly ranked at hon at which point yeah it prob makes you better
sometimes when you break from a game for a short while you come back alot better, at least temporarily.

DotA players have an edge over unexperienced players because they already know can happen in a certain period of time (0:00-2:00-2:15) or (5:00-20:00) or (21:35-21:40)*
*For example:
You have slain Blue (blue_you_noob) @ 20:50.
Blue has respawned @ 21:35.
Blue has begun teleporting back to you @ 21:37.
Blue has teleported back to the tower you're pushing @ 21:40.
It sounds dumb on paper, but if you put this piece of information into your encyclopedia, it becomes vital information. Somebody who has been playing for a long time will say to you "Well of course he's going to teleport back here, along with everybody else and their grandmother."

Except you can learn all of this in hon. Like someone said before, this would have been an advantage when you switched from dota to hon (as opposed to starting from scratch), but now it is not.
If you are bad at hon because you're having trouble with the speed of the game, then switching to dota or dota2 for a while might help you get used to the game itself at a slower pace, and then moving back to hon things might seem easier.
Edit: Interestingly, if you have good reflexes with your skills and attacks in dota, they might be all that much better in hon (due to the lack of delay in hon)

1600-1700 hongame is like championship match compared to dota2 matches at same skill level. No couriers, no wards, no map awareness at all.. everyone just doing their own thing.
It's just like old bnet dota matches. Quality of players is amazingly bad and still big part of dota players think they are something special. Its kinda funny and silly at the same time.
makes me grateful for the fast response time when i play, so yes, it made a difference for me.

Yes and no, depends alot on the level of play, first of all the meta game is diffrent, people say that DotA is slow in general, these people are idiots who dosen't understand that this is HoNs future (HoN adapts their metagame with about 6 months - 1 years delay from DotA) just an example of this is that magebane started to be picked up after the international because the DotA 2 players used it. As for the delay, this is not general, depends on which server you get in DotA 2, some of them have delay, but it's a closed beta so you can't really complain (still less lag and crashes then HoN closed beta). The thing is if you are good, which some people here aren't, DotA 2 also has a hidden rating system, win a majority of your games and then you get people in you team that wards and buys couriers.
The things that you will get better at from playing DotA 2 is last hitting and support cash management (S2 made supports shitty easy to play). Try to play drow ranger in DotA 2, then try to play flint in HoN, will be really easy to get those last hits in HoN now. These things dosen't really apply that much for players above 1800, as these people played real support when it existed in HoN and they know how to last hit.
To sum it up, for players below 1800, it might make a difference for the rest tbh not really, just play the game you like better you wont be that rusty anyway.
PS: What PB said earlier is true, taking a break from a game for some time usally make you better when you come back.
PS: Also should be noted that you are asking this in HoN forums, considering the HoN community what answer do you expect? A true one or a bunch of flames and ramble from low lvl players? :) AND YES I PLAY DOTA 2>HON,,,,Just in the forums cuz the drama here is so delicious.

Are you serious? I am currently 39/1 in Win/loss in Dota2, and I have never in my life played dota before dota2. Easiest game of all time, everything is so slow that even my cat can react faster than the players

this is exactly my experience.
edit : I dont agree with cash management, I actually find myself missing striders and other items generally regarded as bullshit. After a few dota 2 games you miss everything that forced teamplay and ganking.
Btw : U get more gold for lasthitting in dota 2, just so you know.

Turtle metagame was 2 years ago in HoN, sorry.
Also, the only reason MB is picked up is the buff to regen and nerf to FWS, even a child could figure that out. Has nothing to do with the International.

I'm curious as to how one would qualify DotA's metagame as turtle. Though ignorance and absolute faith in hearsay seem like the probable causes.

Definately not. HoN is a cakewalk for last hitting.

Well cat will punch the screen for few seconds before pushing a keyboard button.
Playing HoN makes me better at Dota 2 for sure.

And i suppose you belive that the current ganking metagame in HoN game out of the blue, that MSI came up with the trilane and that turtle simply means you have a hard carry?
playing dota2 made me a lot better at hon and playing dota2 is the sole reason why trixi carried msi to victory at dhw 8-)

You sure this had nothing to do with melee carries getting buffed in Patch 2.0 along with Magebane receiving his own buffs on top of that?

I gave up on Dota2 after the first 10 games I played had 2+ leavers in each of them.
Kept on missing last hits in HoN because I'd start my attack animation way too early after getting used to the Dota2 delay. :(

Dunno. DotA has a lot of unspoken rules like "No backdooring" and stuff. Getting used to that might make you worse and ill prepared for such tactics.

i haven't run into you at all lately in matchmaking. whats up with that.

I think it's ok since the enemy team could do the same, and as second thing it would screw over the support that cant buy any wards (creepblocking) or regen items, mana pots or anything which makes supporting hard, I doubt it's a viable tactic tbh.
Make in all-random games it could be viable.
I think what makes you better is that you enjoy a game more after 2 weeks pause or so. :scou:
And I can not see any differences in getting lasthits except a bit more delay in dota2? Not sure what you mean.
i haven't run into you at all lately in matchmaking. whats up with that.
matchmaking games got really boring because when you're at high elo's you get paired with brand new players and it ends up being a complete **** fest of a gameo r something i dont even know its just boring and not fun :(

Yeah i would say that playing dota or dota 2 even, would make you a better player in Hon. I say that cause the majority of the characters in Hon are just replica's of the dota characters. Also as a matter of fact, almost every item in Hon is from dota.
So yeah, playing dota 2 should make you a better Hon player
