What are some good habits that would give me that little bit extra to push me to become a better player?

Look around the training grounds on laning and creeping and just plain tactics or the basics.

Last hit, deny, watch the minimap, buy and place wards if you're a support hero, always carry a homecoming stone and be at teamfights. Then work on being REALLY GOOD at all those things.

In addition to what Godlessmass said... (and you should check the minimap religiously...)
Learn what all the heroes and items do. Get used to checking your opponents' and allies' items and builds. Don't just build Good Builds™, but start thinking in terms of what kind of build is most necessary for the game, considering the direction it's headed, to help your team win. Try to notice how your allies and enemies play, and think of ways you and your team can benefit from it.
These kinda posts bug me somewhat. We can't really tell you how to play better unless we see how you play, and even then nine times out of ten it will be down to experience. If you like I could post a list of all the skills required in DotA/HoN, but what's the point in doing that unless I know what level of skill you're at for every aspect of this?

play with good opponents. Learn from their tech/strats. If you are a DotA player then it would be easy to adjust to the game. Its just the items and the heroes.
