I hate to resort to analogies, but I'll try this one out and see how it goes :)

Picture this, you start to work for a company during its inception. A few weeks later the company begins to thrive, but then you look at the performance of your workers and realize that one worker is really lacking the skill to fulfill the position and really can't hold his own (constantly asking for help on coding for example). Although, that worker may have displayed exceptional effort, maybe he just isn't cut out for the job at hand. Do you really believe that worker should stay, even if someone you don't have to constantly babysit comes along? Or do you believe the company should replace that worker for his lackluster performance?

Really you are the judge and everyone has a different opinion on this, but in my, personal opinion, we made the right move. I personally would not expect a company for example, to keep me if my performance was lackluster.

If and when you were on a decline, a loss, perhaps it should have been time to look and bench or kick someone out. But that was not happening. Picture this, you start to work for a company during its inception. A few weeks later the company begins to thrive, but then you look at the performance of your workers and realize that one worker is really lacking the skill to fulfill the position and really can't hold his own (constantly asking for help on coding for example). Look at it from a regular sport perspective. A team does really well and gets into the finals, but they have a player or 2 who are sub par even thought they as a team still did well. Replacing those players with better players (and not to mention makes it way more realistic to actually reach those finals you qualified for) it only makes sense if you want to be the best.

I find it funny how so many people keep calling peterpandam trash and useless and horrible but then when he is kicked out of a team the team is wrong.
