View Full Version : how to tell what attacks are magic?
Is there an easy way to tell what attacks are considered magic and what aren't? I'm trying to figure out what shrunken head would protect me from....for example, I'm assuming Torturer's spells are all magic...is his range attack also magic?

Every single spells are considered magic unless stated otherwise under it ( At least i believe ), every right click attacks that do not need to be toggled ( Arachna's slow for example is a toggle ) are non magic attacks. But even there... there's a few spells that work throught shrunken head; the effect happens but you do not take magic damage from it.

Usually one buys Shaman's Headress when against nukers. Most damaging skills deal magic damage. I can think of Demented Shaman's Healing Wave, Legionnaire's Whirling Axe, Pollywog Priest's Voodoo Wards attacks and Pestilence's Impale as exceptions, which are physical damage; not magic.
When against carriers/dpsers, Shaman's doesn't actually works. On the otherside, Helm of the Black Legion or any item that raises your armor would protect you. However, attacks that are actually activable skills, as stated by Cherry, such as Arachna's Webbed Shot are magic damage. I can only think of her attack. Others passive abilities are considered attack modifiers, so, physical damage.

Be careful when stating whether things are magic. Some spells are magic spells which deal physical damage, and some are physical abilities which deal magic damage.
Take for example Pestilence's stun. His stun is magical, but the damage it deals is physical. This means that you will take the damage while magic immune, but be unaffected by the stun.
As for Arachna's Webbed Shot, it is physical damage. The effect is magical for the purposes of targeting, but Headdress will not protect you from it.

As a rule of thumb, all normal attacks are NOT magic, and most spells are magic. Shrunken head will protect you from ALL effects of normal spells, but only the DAMAGE of ultimate spells. For example, if Succubus ulted you while you had the shrunken head active, you would not be able to move or attack, but you would take 0 damage.

I see, its tricky. Indeed its not logical to reduce Arachna's damage when using its slow through the use of Shaman's. However about Pestilence's Impale I specified talking about the damage.
And in the end I didn't pay enough attention to the question. The OP originally had in mind Shrunken's Head protection effects. It doesn't protect from those skills I mentioned, and also it can't nullify the effects of Andromeda's Void Rip, Chrono's Chronofield, Tempest's Elemental Void, Keeper of the Forest's Root, Legionnaire's Taunt, Legionnaire's Decapitate, Kraken's Whirpool, Soul Reaper's Demonic Execution. It's important to note that although you suffer the main effect of each skill, you do not suffer the collateral magical damage when applicable.
I'm not sure about Dark Lady's Dark Blades, Pharaoh's Wrath of the Pharaoh, Maliken's Possession.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

All ultimates will ignore magic immunity for their status impairments, but not for their damage.

I don't quite get it either; I'm sure there's balancing behind it, but I just can't accept that Voodoo Jester's ward and Pollywog's ward do physical damage.
