Ive been playing a while now and im getting better but i cant seem to get over the "dieing way too much" hump.
I am just not sure how to fix it. Its not cause im putting myself in a stupid amount of danger.. i understand the basics of where you should and shouldnt be and the danger you can put yourself in through poor positioning and ignorance of ganking techniques.
But I am still dieing alot.. I feel like every game im getting focus fired in group fights.. or chosen to be ganked in my lane early on.
I figure i must be doing some small things wrong that are making me easier to kill.. but I cant seem to figure out what.
Lately ive been playing Pebbles.
My build is steamboots or enhanced boots.. then i get a nomes wisdom and demonic chestplate.
Typically I do try and help initiate fights.. maybe this is something I shouldnt be doing? I dunno.. i have no idea what im doing wrong.. I just know that I keep getting wtfpwned.
Can anyone think of any advice they would give a player who doesnt have a long history of playing... advice that helps increase survivability.

ditch nomes.
some will say Arcane or Ring of sorcery whatever its called in HoN.
get portal key, should help in getting some kills, initiating, and escaping from some ganks.

It happens to me a lot when playing Magmus but I try to look at the outcome of the battle as an indicator of how well i initiated. Because you initiate you are obviously going to be the one right up in front taking fire from the ones stupid enough to go for you instead of the real damage dealers. If the battle comes out with your team taking out 2-3 and you are the only one who died then good job your role has been filled.

Really? but it seems like such a good fit.. helps with mana issues and adds all the things pebbles likes.. attack speed, attack damage, and armor.. and its fairly cheap.
Ive heard alot of people talk about getting portal key for ganking purposes.. the reason i havent done so is because im a bit worried that I wont be able to effectively use it... teleporting in, stunning, then throwing all in that split second timeframe.
Still. Ill give it a shot and see if that helps me cut down on deaths.

I hear ya.. and I often tell my friend that I play with that in order for my team to kick ass..I have to be dead.. because it seems like every time I get killed my team sweeps the enemy and has a successful push.
The issue im running up against with this is that I dont get any credit for the kills.. I miss out on alot of the assists.. I dont get the XP..i dont get the gold.. and I end up getting out leveled and with a high death count that gets me labeled as a feeder/noob.
Additionally..the effect its having on my K/D/A stats is bad... im getting kicked out of 1600+ games because I dont have the stats of a 1600+ player.
AND i have seen other tank-like initiators doing what *seems* to be the same thing im doing..but they live through it.. even pick up some kills.
So I must be doing something wrong.. either in my item build or my movement or my timing or something.. but i have no idea what and its getting annoying. I keep playing trying to figure out how I can do things better but all this experimenting is just making my stats worse hehe.

if you are having problems why dont you practice the combo in a practice game? S2 has made it really quite easy to do. once you get the hang of it then jump into a game and see how much you have improved.

It's good that you are playing the same person over and over so you can improve. What you should aim for though, is to always try to realize your mistakes and figure out what to do to correct them. For example, if you are getting ganked in your lane a lot, you need to pay a little more attention to your minimap. It's nice if a teamie will call the missings for you, but sometimes it is best that you watch for yourself.
If you see a dot disappear, you should get back to your tower and possibly ask for some assistance if you are pretty sure something is going to happen, or maybe even get out of there with a homecoming stone.
I'd recommend going for the arcane ring (ring of sorcery?) like someone mentioned above. Pebbles doesn't really revolve around smashing people. He truly shines by the awesome spike damage of his throw and stalagmites. This is where the portal key comes into play. What you want to do it find a target that you can gank (you can also initiate with this) and blink right next to the person. Follow up with your stalagmites, and as the stalagmites are falling, throw the target to his current location. What that does is make him take damage from the stalagmites twice. This takes quite a bit of practice to get down, hell even i can't do it, but that's how it's done. (All of this assuming that S2 has it working)
You might want to keep enough mana with you to stun someone at all times. It could score you a kill or save your life.
And to end my long-winded post, you will learn with time which situations are good or bad for you to get involved with. Just don't give up and you'll catch on!

This, if you don't want ring of sorcery, you can get 2x talisman of exile, will allow you to use stun and toss twice each and you'll also can use blink from your portal key.
