I've never played DOTA and only played 3 games. The learning curve on this game is feeling pretty steep right now. I've heard people yell out all sorts of stuff at me and I have no idea what they are talking about and then they just call me a noob and be rude. Is there a place for common abbreviations like "miss" (whatever that means)?

In HoN generally you will have the following set-up:

Two heroes in both the Top and Bottom lanes from each team and one hero from each team in the middle.

When one of the heroes goes missing from the combat, it is wise to warn teammates just in case he is going into a different lane to gang-up on your teammate. Thus, if someone goes missing from bottom lane, someone should call out 'bot miss' to alert the rest of the team.

Other abbreviations for 'miss' include 'mia' and 'ss'.

Just saying.

Do they include which lane they are in? "Top miss" or "Bot miss"? Or do they just scream "MISS!??!?!?" Or is it when your hero misses an attack?

i hope op is jokeing.... you cant find out what miss means you shouldnt be on the internet
He's talking about "Miss middle," not "lol I missed my attack!"

It means, in the above example, that the enemy hero(es) who were in the middle lane are missing, and that they might be moving to another lane to try and kill you or your allies.

For instance, if an enemy Succubus is in the middle lane, and someone calls that the middle lane is missing, then you should make sure your near your tower or not near death, as Succubus is a very strong ganker (term used for ability to kill other heroes efficiently), and will be able to kill you and your lane buddy all on her own if you comes to your lane.

Common used are:

Mid/Top/Bottom miss/missing.
<Name of Hero> missing.

Also related, and if the caller knows where the enemy is going:

Top/Mid/Bottom is going Bottom/Mid/Top.

And:

Care Top/Mid/Bottom (Your about to get ganked)

Good luck :)

keep asking ingame. youll get flamed a lot, but there is always a good chance at least one of your team tells you what this or that means. ignore the flamers, or pull off some smart sayings. if you want, i can show you some basics of the game, just pm me.

first off, you're the kind of jackass people this type of forum section is trying to eliminate
second off, if you're going to insult someone, learn to spell

to OP

it's been said but miss just means that someone is missing and you should be cautious kind of like when people say care bot, meaning that bottom should be careful.

look to this thread for more information you need.

Thanks for all the help. I didn't find anything this useful searching. I did however find this question asked on several DotA boards with similarly rude responses to the tool in this thread. Lets try and squash the DotA elitist attitude in beta before the game releases :-)

What does ss stand for, anyway? I assumed it was 'stay safe' but if it's supposed to mean missing, is it a non-english term?

I've heard people refer to ss in a different context. To me it either means missing, or it's referring to your ultimate (ie do you have your ss up?), or it's referring to Soulstealer the hero. Just to screw with people's minds you can go "ss ss, has ss" >_>

Another variation of this,
Top 0
Bot 0
Mid 0
I knew it meant missing after I saw them using these but kinda weird never seen anyone say it like that, to me just saying mia is easier.
