QuC vs smf (Oct 15th), Interview with QuC

A highly anticipated match is coming up here shortly on October 15th. It's Round 2 of the [HL] $500 HoN Tournament (http://honleague.com/tournaments.php?do=view&id=4), and the match is "Team Bromance (http://honleague.com/competitions.php?do=viewteam&id=34)" vs "Suave Gaming (http://honleague.com/competitions.php?do=viewteam&id=21)", or QuC vs smf as most of us know them. Both of these teams are constantly scrimming and are training to perform at their best. I caught up with a couple guys from Quality Control and asked them some questions...

Stridah: How do you guys think you're going to fare against smf?

Angel: I think we stand a really good chance against them, they're one of the teams we've played relatively frequently and we've both won and lost. We never had the skill level of the five that will be here for this match, so it's going to be interesting to see how it all plays out.
Krangry: Should be a couple hard games, but if we play up to our potential we should be able to come out on top. It's all about keeping our head up regardless of how we start the match, And playing hard throughout.

Stridah: Who do you guys think are the top 3 teams this very moment, and why?

Angel: Well, I honestly haven't seen a lot of the teams play, especially all of the teams in the tournament. As such, I can't really place three teams above the rest.
Krangry: FFS, SMF, 143. FFS won the first tourney that avan hosted, and have some of the strongest players currently playing the game. SMF are all super strong players and have GREAT team synergy. 143 has won the last couple GR tournies so they have to be up there, although they havent played SMF/FFS as far as i know.

Stridah: Who will win this tournament, and take home $500 dollars?

Angel: If we play at the level we did against Pokerstars, we could easily take this tournament and win the finals.
Krangry: We will of course!, on a serious note that is a hard one to answer. There are a ton of good teams in the tourney. FFS is a very strong team, and i see them going pretty far.

Stridah: How big do you see HoN getting? Will it ever surpass DotA's level of competition, and will it remain the destination for DotA elites in spite of numerous DotA spinoffs?

Angel: I can see HoN getting pretty big, it's already huge and it's still in beta. Then again, there are a lot of people playing to play just because it's free, are they going to buy the game or just leech until release and go back to DotA? I personally can't find myself ever going back to play DotA, the main reason being it doesn't support widescreen resolution and looks terrible on my monitor as such. Really it all depends on how competitive teams from DotA react to the game, already we see lots of players at least playing HoN, if it catches it could easily overtake DotA. The biggest thing that I feel will ward competitive players off is the ability to mod the UI, much like WoW's addons, but hopefully S2 will deal with the ones that
change gameplay so that it remains a fair and even playing ground.
Krangry: It all depends on the stubborness of "DoTa Fanboys". If they give this game a chance they will be hooked just like i am, and i can guarantee that. The game is already huge and is in CLOSED beta, there are already some great scrim teams, and more and more are showing up every day. I dont see any dota spinoff topping this, its already got such a huge head start.

Stridah: In your opinion, who are the top 5 HoN players thus far?

Angel: I'm too biased as a person to answer this question. :)

Stridah: Who is the biggest threat you face from smf?

Angel: ZP's solo mid is really what we have to watch out for, he has a lot of skill with the crow/bottle combination, and he's really good at farming.
Krangry: They are all super strong players. I would say ZP, if he gets time alone to farm he gets huge fast.

he went hood/vanguard and we reflected dmg on ourselves to death. he had accursed+zeus too, so semi global dmg strat from back in the day and heals+shields /wrist

GG, wp by quc overall. smf did some mistakes, like splitting that much in that kongor fight where they lost mid raxes. They were doing good till there, and even after, they managed to win some good team battles, but it was over already with the mega creeps eating everything.

Pretty sure he got the demonic breastplate to support his team... The +5 armor aura somewhat negates shieldbreaker's -6... I'd have gone for heart though... get more HP so you can reflect more damage...

getting armor/evasion doesn't reduce the amount of damage you reflect, it simply spreads it out over a longer period.

Using the same logic Pestilence would be your favorite enemy since him swarming you would allow you to die faster and thus deal the SAME damage, but faster.

Obviously this isn't right though, mainly because SW is a carry, and carries are not meant to die fast.

Adapt, I don't support that kind of build on SW but if it works in a comeback win then it obviously has some viability regardless of skill level.

yea if thats the case then that obviously makes sense. The point is pure hp like a heart gives him survivability while also allowing him to tank more. Manta also gives hp as well as giving him more images. I mean if you've ever played competitive dota and you saw a spectre with hood and assault cuirass you'd just laugh.

And Tiny im not saying that he shouldn't have gone survivabilty items just that items like butterfly and + armor items are generally bad on spectre. Same with hood if it doesn't do what lysol said. I think your even better off stacking hearts.

Hmm...I suppose so. With picks and bans and everything each game seems to average at least an hour. Tonight started at 7 PST and it looks like it won't end before 12 am. It's one thing to play 3 games during the day just for fun casually, it's another thing to have to commit a potential five hours to a match. I used to watch some competitive World of Warcraft too it seems like you could fit a whole days worth of games at a tournament into this one match between smf and QuC.

I compete in Urban Terror (fps) and match nights you only have to be on for about an hour, tops.

I'm not trying to hate or anything and if you enjoy it, more power to you. It's just something I've observed since starting to enjoy the competitive HoN scene (never watched dota).

I can't really be angry at you then if you've never played the game. It's really not helping e-rev much if they're casting matches with someone who doesn't know where to look though.

Believe me we know... As I said b4 we have other ppl that do HoN only, they just werent on and I was the last resort. We would rather have a cast go up for you to watch then nothing at all with our excellent commentators.

i think they changed it in dota so the courier can't pick up **** like aegis + cheese or carry gem. It takes the whole point of sentry wards out of the game almost

The games were nice, but whoever was doing the camera got some serious attention issues, a lot of the time the camera was like totally off, either not centered on the fight(eh look at the top of the screen we can see people casting spells but we don't see on what/where), wandering off in the middle of a fight, or completely missing the action. Also could use a lot more hero clicking to see items. Oh and at some point I got sick from the moving around for no reason too, like there was nothing going on and the camera just went back and forth non stop for 20secs.

Other than that, pretty good games and liked the comments.

I read the last 3pages or so, and I remember I read the first 2 announcing the cast before it happened, but yeah guess I missed that, the weird cameras make more sense with the guy not knowing the game I guess. It got better in 3rd game though, and I really liked the late night rantings between group fights of the casters, so liked the whole thing overall.

And yeah someone said puppet bans, I wonder how no one picked puppet in those games, he's such a powerhouse since the patch, high burst dmg, decent carry and massive disabling. At least we got to see "new" picks like sand wraith and maliken. No magebane either, even though a lot of the setups were caster heavy.

The cast was lagging a bit for me, so I let it stream for a half hour or so on pause. I come back and watch 20 minutes or so no problems, then the video starts lagging. The audio still keeps up right on pace... So I pause again, let it stream, and then when I start the video is going to like x8 speed to catch up to the audio, and when it catches up the audio jumps back like 5 minutes and I'm hearing things again that aren't even remotely connected to what's going on. I try to skip ahead to reset it, but when I minimize the movie from full screen I no longer have a toolbar on the video, so I can't even do that.

JustinTV, Livestream, Youtube, ANYTHING. Just please stop using Silverlight, it's f***ing terrible. And your cameraman is even worse, I don't understand why the hell one of you guys can't do it. Probably something to do with using Silverlight? The cast sounded decent, for a change, but getting the camera to actually line up with what you were talking about was like trying to get dressed blindfolded and with no arms.

The quality of the stream is flatout horrible, just try to read the text ingame. Its impossible as the quality looks 1999. I don't understand why you have to have a "video-guy" as it can't require more than 56k to stream a video in such a poor quality. Do some research on how to render the stream and make it look better. I know that other sites are making use of OctoShape and the quality is very good (I don't know anything about it though, just that it looks good from a user POV). Maybe you can hit up DJwheat (www.djwheat.tv) as he has a lot of knowledge on the subject and I know that he helped other people to get some good settings when doing live streams.

Why does the giant spinning logo have to be on the stream and blocking the inventory? If it has to be there, then make it smaller and throw it a place where it blocks less important info.
