I played a match earlier with several internet strangers, as I often do. Some were friendly, and like usual, some were not. I think we're all aware of the HoN community's notorious reputation. You can't go a single match without someone verbally abusing another player on his or her own team. Yes, it's griefing, and yes, there is a system in place to report players who do that. Unfortunately, I (and assuredly, many others) do not feel that it is effective. I know the GM's and the S2 staff are probably overwhelmed with the report-a-player system, and often times it takes weeks before a reported player faces any consequences.
I love HoN, but it's really hard to justify playing it when you know that you're going to spend more time in the match trading insults with a cranky teammate than you are actually playing the game. Something needs to be done about this.
For this reason, I propose that we create a system that allows the players of HoN to socially rate other players, and have filters in game to block out some of the less friendly players. Much like the current report-a-player process, I'd imagine this system would be very slow-going at first. Someone can't be labeled a griefer just because one player decides to abuse the system and start rating players with that tag. Maybe set a certain threshold for how many times a player must be rated such before being slapped with the tag. I don't really have a great plan for how this will be implimented, but this is the suggestions forum, I'm sure if we put our heads together we can come up with something that works.
Pre-arguments:
For the users who inevitably are going to respond, "If you don't like it, don't play!" Quit trolling, find something better to do.
For the response: "If you don't like it, mute or ignore offensive players." I think it's important that we all consider the fact that Heroes of Newerth is a game that relies almost completely on being able to work together with other players. If the answer to not being cussed out by another player is to no longer be able to cooperate or interact on a team level, I think it's obvious that the system is completely broken.
