Current players quit, means no sales of goblin coins. New players that would have bought HoN will buy Dota 2 instead (for obvious reasons). No more income means most servers need to be shutdown, some staff will be fired and that is how it's going to kill HoN

My opinion on the "DOTA2 is going to kill HON" issue

People say HON will die when DOTA2 comes out. In other words, many current HON players, and maybe potential future HON players, will transfer over to DOTA2.

But they are missing one thing. It doesn't matter if you transfer to DOTA2 if you play HON now, you already paid the $30 to S2 and they already earned the money. There isn't a monthly fee, so there isn't any more profit to S2 after your initial purchase of the game.

Let's assume that there are not many new players or new accounts being made now as there was back in spring 2010, as suggested by the recent "Goblin Store" (GS for short) release. People who say "HON is going down" because of this GS release is wrong since sales numbers cannot go down but only remain stationary. HON players may not necessarily be declining, but simply not increasing. We will ignore profits earned from Goblin Coins in that it is inconsistent with every player, with some spending a lot and some not spending at all.

The lowest PSR player is ranked 249,222, suggesting that there are a current total of 249,222 players.

It is not even important if the current players quit, as long as there are new players coming in and paying the $30, S2 is profiting.

The only profit loss is the from the loss of potential future customers that are lost due to the release of DOTA2, not from the transfer of current players of HON to DOTA2.

Opinions? Serious ones please.

Well guys, what about this theory?

Dota 2 will get tons of PR, and many people not familiar to the dota genre will begin playing. If valve does it "right" (which means making it mainstream, I know how some of you people hate that.), we might see a 4-5 X increase in people playing dota games. If it becomes popular, the other dota games will also recieve a lot of attention. If Dota 2 fails hard, HoN might get MORE players than it already had.

All I really care about is getting more players overall, if Dota 2 is actually better than HoN, Ill play that instead. If it isnt, Ill stay here, simple as that. Until then, HoN is undeniably the best dota game out there.

Yeah HoN has a couple of advantages. People are invested in HoN. DotA doesnt need to just be better, it needs to be $50 better, which is a much higher barrier. New players also enter this genre mostly through friends so as long as a decent chunk of the player base remains HoN will be fine.

Like I really don't see where people are getting that Valve really even knows how to make a game like this. If there is one thing to note about the MOBA genre, it's CONSTANT updates/balancing. And Valve has never really done that.

Plus I know icefrog is working with them.........but icefrog did not MAKE Dota, he just helped balance it along with many other people. he has no idea how to actually MAKE a game.

Pretty much this, at the current state HoN is THE competitive MOBA game right now. LoL......while it may be free and fun for some isn't really considered Competitive. You don't really see many LoL livecasts/gaming tournaments as much as HoN

So for Dota 2 to really capture HoN players it's going to have to have everything HoN has plus alot more. And remember this: HoN had a BETA to actually test stuff out, that was in for almost a year. Dota 2 would need at LEAST that to get everything worked out......and we havent even heard news of a Beta......so it's going to be awhile if they plan on doing it right. :keep:

Dota 2 WILL kill HoN. It won't be an immediate death, but I would say 3 months after Dota 2's release, the number concurrent players on HoN will be 1/4 at most of what it is now.

I had a lot of fun with HoN, but Dota 2 is going to be great. At the very least, we can expect better customer treatment from Valve (Valve will probably **** on their player base also, but they won't grin and tell us to like it like S2 does).

In my opinion, dota 2 ill boost the HoN player base. Cause if you think about it more people play LoL because its free. It is safe to assume that Valve's dota 2 will be more then $30 to purchase. If anything, as a big and well established company, Valve will spread the dota genre and bring more players in. The points brought up by these threads are pretty much moot until we actually see some concrete gameplay footage and details about the game. Right now it's 4 pretty-looking CG renders of characters with fancy epic-looking all caps Times New Roman hero titles.

I have no standing thoughts on what I'll do when it comes out until I actually see what it's going to be like. What I am excited about is it means S2 will have to kick into ultra high gear and give the playerbase more and more reasons to stay with HoN, meaning we may see some pretty cool/big changes for the positive (and more community-influenced) as the chosen day approaches.

Even if DotA 2 does slay HoN, I sure had my fun. This was easily one of the best games I've ever played for such a small amount of money. Hell, I'd do terrible, unspeakable things to go back to the closed beta days and relive those 5 AM pubstomp runs.

Balance was non-existent before 6.0. DotA and HoN are extremely similar. The main differences are:

1) In DotA input delay or lag is much more of a factor. The game is balanced around lag, and therefore adapting to it is a huge part of actually playing the game. (This also dispels the myths that DotA 2 will be perfectly balanced on release, because playing on a new engine without input delay is going to significantly change how the game is balanced/played)

2) In DotA each hero had a different set of hotkeys and there were no item hotkeys. You could download programs to change this but usually people just learned the defaults.

3) Some of the heroes and items are slightly different than in DotA (I say slightly because no hero or item in HoN is dramatically different than DotA heroes, especially in the context that everything else is practically the same).

Other than these 3 things, HoN is pretty much DotA with upgraded graphics and better interface, accessibility, leaver protection, and utility options. If you become good at HoN, there's no reason to think that you won't become good at DotA. However, becoming good at LoL by no means guarantees that you will even be average in DotA, they are completely different.

OP, here's an example. I played Batman AA, and loved it. As soon as I finished campaign mode-and even while playing it- I played HoN.

Now that Arkham City is coming out, I'll buy it and finish it asap, then come back to HoN. Dota 2's gonna sucks ass, and it'll take 3 years for it to get at HoN's current lvl, at which point HoN 3.0 will rape face.

and this thread is hilarious in that you are basicly saying LoL is easier than HoN. Keep up the comedy guys.The only thing comedic is that you would try to deny the obvious reality that LoL IS way easier than HoN or DotA.

Let's look at the facts:

1. League of Legends removes denying, one of the largest measures of skill in the laning phase of DotA/HoN. This means that, in effect, LoL players only have half as many creeps to worry about last-hitting as DotA/HoN players do. In addition, last hitting in LoL is much easier than in HoN/DotA. The creeps do much less damage to each other while maintaining similar health to DotA creeps, making it unbelievably easy for a hero to land last hits (in addition to not even having to worry about denies). Which brings me to my next point:

2. League of Legends creeps are so much less of a threat than HoN/DotA creeps. They do less damage, move more slowly, and won't move out of the lane to attack you the same way they do in HoN and DotA. They also do significantly less damage, so harassing an enemy hero in the lane is effortless.

3. Mana conservation is almost a non-issue in LoL. The developers even admit (http://www.leagueoflegends.com/learn/dota_and_lol) that they want spells in their game to be spammable, to make it more "exciting". Between runes, masteries, Clarity, and the excessive mana regen heroes get naturally, effective use of your mana in LoL is almost a non-factor. In HoN, intelligent use of your limited mana pool is a very important aspect of the game. Sometimes you will see pros taking Bottle, Battery, and Chalice, and still running out of mana frequently. Many heroes have to spend over 5,000 gold before their mana issues are completely solved, and even then certain heroes will still have issues (Torturer, Repulsor).

4. Hero selection phase: In HoN/DotA, every hero in the entire pool is available to anybody who purchased the game. This means that the only factor that will determine who gets the better lineup is which team picks better. In LoL, each player can only choose from the heroes that they have unlocked, which not only gives an advantage to people who have spent money, but also adds a large element of luck into the picking phase. If one team does not own heroes which effectively counter the lineup of another team, they are **** out of luck, wouldn't you say?

5. Runes and Masteries add an unfair element of imbalance to the game, not only by rewarding people who are of a higher Summoner level, but also by not allowing the enemy players, inside the game itself, to know exactly what runes you've used. In HoN and DotA the hero stats, items, and skills of each hero are publicly available to any player at any time.

6. In HoN/DotA, not only is the map much larger in comparison to the LoL map, making positioning and good teamwork more important, but in order to travel large distances quickly, you have to buy a homecoming stone, where in LoL, each hero can simply teleport back to their base at any time. The proclivity of players (or lack thereof) to carry homecoming stones (and use them correctly) is one of the largest determinations of skill in DotA/HoN, which LoL completely circumvents.

7. In LoL, Summoner Spells remove skill from the game by giving players free abilities that they would have had to work/pay for in HoN/DotA. For example, Blink is like buying a Portal Key (2150), Sprint is like buying Ghost Marchers (1500), Revive is like buying back (which can cost 1000 gold or more), Clarity is like Ring of Sorcery (1275), Heal is like Astrolabe (2306), etc. Sure, you can make the argument that "it doesn't remove skill because everybody gets them", but you simply need to read a post I made in another thread (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showpost.php?p=13253272&postcount=8) to understand the fallaciousness of that myth.

8. In LoL, they release heroes every 2 weeks like clockwork, which they must do in order to propagate their marketing scheme. I could explain how bad it is for the game to release heroes just for the sake of money, but if you can't figure that out yourself, then I doubt my explanation would do much. In HoN and DotA, heroes are released only when they've been properly designed, examined, and thoroughly tested to have a positive effect on the game. LoL heroes are notorious for being very imbalanced on release as a marketing ploy so that everybody will buy them, does this sound like an implementation of skill to you?

9. In DotA/HoN, to counter invis heroes, you either have to buy wards, dust, or a gem (750 gold). Each one of these methods has its own advantages and disadvantages; for example, they all take up an inventory slot, and the gem, for example, drops when you die, allowing the enemy team to pick it up. In LoL, players simply spend 400 gold on a potion which they can then use, having the same effect as a gem, but without taking up an inventory spot, and without dropping on the ground for the other team to use afterwards. This, quite clearly, means that countering invis heroes in HoN/DotA requires much more skill than in LoL.

10. In DotA/HoN, killing a barracks means that it is gone forever, and the enemy team will continue to be at a disadvantage for the rest of the game. This gives great effectiveness to heavy pushing lineups who can quickly take down an enemy rax, and then be at a large advantage even if their heroes aren't as powerful late game. In LoL, the "barracks" (inhibitors) will always respawn after a certain amount of time. This is a shining example of LoL's "there's no mistake you can't recover from" attitude, which while possibly making players feel better about themselves, is not a positive thing for the game.

11. Probably the biggest disparity of skill between the two games is the death mechanic. In HoN/DotA, killing powerful enemy carries several times throughout the game will cause them to lose all their gold, preventing them from farming, and in some cases ever becoming useful. In LoL, you never lose any gold when you die, so eventually the enemy carries WILL get farmed, regardless of what you do.

12. In LoL the max hero level is 18, in DotA/HoN it's 25. This means that a good player has much more room for dominance in DotA/HoN than in LoL. Once a good player reaches 18 in LoL, he has reached his peak and cannot go any further, where in HoN/DotA he has 7 more levels in which he can surpass his opponent(s).

13. The ability power mechanic in LoL muddies up the roles of the heroes by allow any type of hero to carry a game. In DotA/HoN, an intelligence hero can typically only become so powerful before becoming more and more useless lategame, while an agility hero is typically weak early on, but dominates later. In LoL many heroes can be strong the entire game without losing any strength, because ability power allows casters to continue becoming more powerful without limits.
