The secret shop is a years-old vestige of what was formerly a positional requirement to buy items. With the advent of flying couriers, any tactical gameplay depth to the secret shop's location was effectively diminished to a mere inconvenience to players. While we do acknowledge that the secret shop served a unique purpose, we ultimately weighed the advantages of such a mechanic with the disadvantages. In this case, the marginal addition to the gameplay depth was far outweighed by the inconvenience of being forced to buy component items in two different locations, as well as the inherent learning difficulties presented to newer players. It is important to not misconstrue our intent as making the game easier to play, but rather, that we show a critical eye to obsolete mechanics that no longer serve a defined purpose. The Observatory is the result of these changes, and while it may seem sparse for now, rest assured that we have further, exciting plans for the building with the intended result of adding overall gameplay options, ultimately resulting in a richer, more strategic experience.

I have seen gank strats, push strats and carry strats all work.

but i also agree that secret shop was a good thing. having all the big expensive items in a location outside base introduces a nice strategy aspect to the game. it makes map control more important and it's always risky leaving your base especially if your towers are down.

especially with hon trying to move away from a carry meta i don't see why they'd give carries the convenience of being able to buy their luxury items in base.

Faceless void has been used in high level dota games (I remember OK with 13K playing it, also YamateH in the ADC finals). So has Juggernaut, PL, Riki, Ursa, BH, Meepo, Alchemist, Slardar, Leoric (maybe I'm forgetting a few).

When every hero you put out pretty much has a 1-shot combo, it's kind of hard to make it balanced for right-click heroes that have no lane presence.

Void has Backtrack (similiar to Chronos Rewind) and Antimage has a passive Magic Resistance (similiar to Magebane, but he doesn't have to blink first)

Mirana's ult allows invis near towers and heroes. You get revealed if you come near them with smoke of deceit.

It was brought into the game to liven it up a little bit. It allows for early pre-creepspawn ganks, by running into your opponents jungle and catching stray heroes offguard. Also later in the game is used for setting up team kills that can bypass ward vision, addressing the problem of carries farming in absolute garunteed safety. Brought a good amount of aggression to the game, without being really broken.

TBH when he moused over mages passive it was 40% at max in Dota 2 in one of first day games.

Yeah that's the thing that really bugs me. Shouldn't smoke of deceit deactivate on courier too? I mean dota has the secret shop, so you'll be using the courier to visit it naturally. Pretty lame mechanic in that aspect...

Never played Dota 1, don't know heroes and abilities, still the stream is very entertaining and watchable in comparison to HoN, unless you actually play HoN. I think it's possible to learn the basics about heroes and abilities just from watching the stream, because it's not a mess thanks to the visual style and the pacing of the game. Trying to understand what the hell happened in 3 seconds it takes for a HoN teamfight is impossible for a bystander. That's the reason why the HoN's tournament will only be watched by the players of the game, which is currently a pretty small audience. As a purely Esport spectacle for a mass audience Dota 2 currently is miles ahead of HoN in my opinion.

I think it's a bit more fair to say Asian DotA, since Malaysians plays exactly like Chinese. Also, if (former) LGD was in the tourney, it would make a big difference.

iG tried something different and got burned. I'm guessing no Syllabear and Voker was a HUGE difference, since it's Zhou's signature hero (Sylla) and Ferrari's signature hero (Voker).

Na'Vi is also one of the best teams worldwide, especially since adding LoH.

Also to add, I think if this tournament has showed anything thus far, it's that Dota 2 is a completely different game than Dota 1 because IMHO, many of these teams wouldn't be crushing the Chinese teams like they are now.

I'm thinking the Chinese are having a hard time adapting to losing their bread and butter heroes like Syllabear and Lycan.

I don't think any sensible person has argued that Chinese DotA is miles ahead of (certain) EU DotA teams. DTS/Na'Vi has always been able to keep up; they did it throughout all of 2010, and they're doing it now. MyM is another team that has been able to pull through vs Chinese powerhouses. Also, back when Virtus.Pro (Vigoss' all-Russian team) played, they were taking on Chinese teams too. However it's hard to argue that the GENERAL LEVEL of DotA in China is a lot higher than it is in EU/NA/SEA/AUS. There are a TON of Chinese teams that would whoop most high-tier EU teams around in a heartbeat; Na'Vi is more like the exception to the rule (and MyM, as mentioned).

Kind of ironic that Syllabear became a staple hero in Chinese DotA after DTS (now most of those players at the time are in Na'Vi) used it against the juggernaut EHome.

Imo ZSMJ is a lot more consistent. I've seen Burning do amazing, and I've seen him do sorta bad. ZSMJ always brings his A-game, which is basically as good as it gets. If we're talking Burning at his best vs ZSMJ at his best, then it's a draw. :D

Was (pre-nerf)/Is considered op in the Chinese Dota scene. Unfortunate that heavily used heroes like Invoker and Sylla are still not ported either.

However don't interpret this as an excuse for today's loss, Chinese Dota didn't live up to the standards that they set for themselves. People can argue semantics and Scourge advantadge and all this crap, but at the end of the day, it was a bad showing today for the Chinese scene.

They're aiming for an autumn 2011 open beta release. It's not like the game is coming out in 2012, only the retail version.

Same as HoN you need to watch or play the game to get used to them , after these days i'd say its not hard for either game , because you've been playing HoN for quite a while (same as myself) HoN animations just feels more natural and easier to see while it actualy isnt completely true as your just used to them.
