Okay, it seems I will have to learn all the dota mechanics sooner or later. Does anyone know a guide that shows the differences? I've seen some for Dota->HoN but they are not all that useful since I don't have a dota background.

I'm so excited about the tournament start, more-so, because I'm hoping pre-orders and open beta will occur right after the tournament rather than genuine excitement over dota2(though I'm probably gonna play it).

Just imagine the implications of this:

All the S2 sucks/dota 2 rocks trolls will be gone. DRD will be gone. We don't have to read the new drama of the week, like why Fielding > Diva (none of those kids that are saying that even know a valid answer to that question). Basically every last troll will be gone.

We can dream, right? :(

At the brink of the debut Dota2 tournament, I wanted to step away for a second and just try to see the relation between dota - hon - dota2.

Dota is a fairly balanced game, at least it was, imo, better balanced at the time I left it than most HoN builds I've encountered.

The reasons why I left dota were mainly because of shoddy P2P connection, no-recconect, rampant leavers (excluding in-houses) and no stat tracking or rankings, or server-side replays.

I am fairly certain that most people who left dota fall into this category. The gist was that HoN was basically dota with a better infrastructure and (less importantly) graphics.

However, I am starting to doubt S2's success with HoN once dota2 goes into beta for several reasons:

Dota was historically a very unbalanced games until IceFrog picked up the mess from Guinsoo and actually started to polish and perfect it. Since than it only went better and better.

People are wrong to assume IceFrog is the "creator" of Dota (what he's not), but I am pretty certain that, if it wasn't for him, the scene for LoL/HoN would not have been set up so easily, as he did bring balance and, through it, competitiveness, which popularized dota and sprouted the moba genre.

Now, all the negative aspects of dota that I've mentioned before are going to be eliminated, and IceFrog will again be in charge of the balance for the new game, which puts a big question mark over HoN, as the base premise of it was to enhance the dota experience with client-server architecture and other services.

With the release of dota2, the need for HoN to fill that gap up dissolves. What works in favor for S2 is to keep their original heroes and hope that users that are accustomed to it are willing enough to stick with it in favor of seeing the un-ported, old heroes and future brand new ones valve will offer.

That and, that is free, now at least. Personally, I was planning on seeing how the situation develops, but I must admit that a lot of steps S2 has been making (EA, sig removal policy, response to the EA outcry) as a reaction to dota2 have left a bad taste in my mouth, and S2 has lost its touch and reputation with the community it once (imo) possessed, and I am certain that a lot of people will agree with me on this (no, we are not the minority, Maliken).

The biggest problem for the survival of HoN is that no matter what if Dota2 is F2P or P2P, the beta will be free and it will pluck away the HoN populance and make them much more willing to purchase it once the game ships.

The thing about this is that you are asuming all playing HoN played Dota.

Otherwise i mostly agree with you exept the "God" picture u have of Icefrog. HoN might not survive i most likely will still be playing it at the same time i play Dota 2. But if you think Dota 2 is going to take over the genre i dont think you are right.

If you look in the numbers LoL probobly will have the most players still. The thing about LoL is that its a game for casuals but Dota 2 wont be in as much regard. But Dota 2 will probobly be more casual than HoN is. The biggest Problem Hon has and has always had is the **** community with trolls and ragers.

Exactly. S2 has screwed up the relationship with their customers over the past few months, driving people away when they should've kept them closer.

Only aggressive and well-planned marketing (+some serious changes on the approach some staff members have) can remedy this situation now. Look at League of Legends: Riot is a terrible company (even worse than S2) in terms of broken promises and censorship, yet they have such an amazing marketing department that they manage to keep a huge fanboy base. Meanwhile at S2, Laura Baker does it wrong.

I never said Icefrog is a God, but I think I should give credit where credit is due, and it is my opinion that before IceFrog dota was a mess (remember death ward riki?).

As for S2, I think they are in a tight corner. Valve has enough muscle behind them so they will not need to utilize systems that are likely to piss people off (like EA), but I agree you are right that they will cater more to the casuals, however not at the expense of the pro scene.

As for LoL, it will suffer a bit but it will live on, I am sure.

I had the lets love the"Indie developer" fever for a long time, they were amazing upto about 4 months ago. And it has been downhill since then. Getting screwed a by a goliath game developer is fine, since you dont expect any different from them. But S2 as a indie developer has violated our trust, and expectations. First the built this trust and then they tore it down. The company I knew doesn't seem to exist anymore. I will only play this game if Dota2 blatantly sucks. If I'm satisfied with it I'll switch and not look back, if not I'll stick with this game. Lets face it though, it cannot suck.

Well, the thing is, that it probably went something like this:

HoN has the rights for DotA for the time Icefrog worked for them.
Valve has the rights for everything DotA.

Otherwise it wouldn't make sense that the Furion port that was in development was never released, or that HoN/DotA2 even exists.

The weird part is just that HoN and Valve have right for DotA material, that coincides at some points.

I think I kinda prefer HoNs graphics. I just wish they'd finally make a clean UI, without feeling the need to make it bricks/ornaments/whatever. Why can't it just be a straight line?
Especially whatever is around the hero portraits in DotA2 annoys me.
To say nothing of the item icons from DotA2, I hope those will be changed.

No one remembers the inability/refusal of S2 to add Beast master's passive to Tundra when they ported him? I believe that was the last dota port. A quite revealing private IRC conversation btw S2Fielding and a moderator at the time, Penance, was leaked which indicates the presence of a contract btw S2 and Ice Frog/Valve to port heroes up to a certain dota patch.

That's still close to 50 heroes, and most of the fan faves are included. I doubt we'll even see all of them played during the tournament as people are going to pick the "go-to" staple heroes.

I also doubt it will have technical glitches - the game, that is, but the stream might. If it does, though, the game hasn't even gone into open beta yet; it would be mildly forgivable.

With the King Dotarian the First lying on his deathbed, the kingdom was in dire need of a temporary leader to take the reins of the empire while the noble Prince Dotarian the Second was sent far away on an epic quest.

The most obvious choice was to look for others in the King's bloodline. The King had a younger son, Prince Lolgar, but he despised the idea of following in his footsteps and ran away seeking his own audience and interests.

While the Kingdom's people worried about if a heir would be found, the King's advisers began delegating amongst themselves. They came to the conclusion. They would hold a jousting tournament to find a temporary King. Through this jousting tournament, they hoped to pick out the smartest, wisest, bravest, and noblest.

And so the mighty jousting tournament was held. The battles were quite a spectacle for the people! Of all the warriors participating in the event, Honir seemed to show the most promise to the people. Some even made claims that he was a better jouster than King Dotarian the First. Honir plowed through the competition like a battering ram. While the finals seemed close, the people already knew Honir would win.

The Honorary King was crowned and there were great celebrations in his name. While he had a rocky start, the people became more and more trusting. Honir adopted many principles of the late king causing some controversy, but the majority didn't seem bothered by it. All was good in the kingdom.

That is until Honir grew tired of getting compared to the late king. He began making subtle changes to the kingdom to distinguish himself from Dotarian the First. While met with a few naysayers, the majority of the people didn't seem to mind them. As time passed, the changes became more and more radical. They came on rather sudden and often unannounced, catching the citizens off-guard. It wasn't very long before the number of critics and naysayers began exponentially growing.

The Kingdom's people never left though. Many people, including some naysayers and critics, still enjoyed living in the kingdom even though they had some open criticisms of the king. However, Honir believed that there wasn't enough people living in the kingdom. He wanted to expand their numbers and grow a bigger following.

Honir came up with the idea of the opened gates policy. He would allow anyone into the Kingdom and allow them to stay. However, the areas that they could live in were limited. Access to other sections of the city required special tokens. Many thought it would be a perfect way to get new faces into the kingdom. Others were disappointed by some of these newer policies. The people became growing tired of the constant changes. Rather than all of these changes, at heart the people really wanted more refinement. While the king would add more houses and districts, he would neglect to update the plumbing system which began to fail. These issues were brought up, but there was never really any action from the king. Months and months would go by until finally the issue would be addressed. Even then, the people believed he did not do enough or he did way too much. The people started accused Honir of corruption and greed.

Things could not get more hectic in the Kingdom. Well... that is until a messenger came running into town. He yelled at the top of his lungs "The Prince is coming home! Everyone, the Prince is coming home!". The messenger told all of the people that the Prince would arrive very shortly along with some amazing trophies that he took from his epic journey.

The news did not go over very well with Honir. He had became accustomed to the life of a king. He couldn't imagine living any other way.
As he oversaw the Prince parading through the streets with the skull of minotaurs and other powerful mythical creatures, he decided that the only way that he could keep his power was to take the throne by force.

As the Prince marched up the steps of the Palace, Honir met him half way in front of a crowd of thousands. It is here that Honir glared right at Prince Dotarian and issued a jousting duel. The Prince was confused by the sudden challenge, but may of the people proudly backed him up. With strong following behind him and the changes in the kingdom that Honir made, the Prince couldn't say no. The rules were set, whoever loses is banished from the kingdom.

As both of the combatants suited up, the people began placing bets and taking sides. While Dotarian the Second is just as good as a jouster as his father in his prime, Honir became rather pudgy and out of practice. Some loyalists believed that Honir has been doing a great job as king, others wanted another ruler for a change that wasn't "corrupt" or "greedy" according the people.

The horn is blown and both of the combatants begin feeling each other out. It is clear that both of them are talented, but Dotarian is definitely coming on top. Honir is running out of steam fairly quickly. He's breathing through his mouth, huffing and puffing. His form and composure gets sloppy.

Rushing with all his might, his soul fueled with the righteous hopes of the people, Dotarian toppled the once great warrior Honir.

Before Dotarian the Second banished Honir, he offered to let Honir stay. He told him that there were no hard feelings. He just wanted to take what was rightfully his and to carry on his father's legacy.

Honir, deeply touched by the King's words decided that he would leave on his own along with his loyal followers. He claimed that he would start a kingdom of his own. Although there was a bitter rivalry amongst the people who remained loyal to Honir and those who believed in Dotarian the Second, he hoped that Dotarian the Second and his people the best.

With these parting words, he takes off into the sunset along with the people his followers.

someone made a 'petition to icefrog to tell us whats different in dota 2' thread and he responded to it today:


There isn't any changelog really, we've kept it up to date with the latest version of dota. Our intention is that there are no major differences, but of course the game is still in beta development.

There are relatively minor changes primarily around fixing unintended bugs, like how the tower AI sometimes ignores Bat Rider completely (only partially fixed in dota1 recently), or Phase Boots causing critical strikes and bash to malfunction while active. Another example of a bug fix from dota1 to 2 is Maelstrom proc chance never working if you did not issue an attack order explicitly. We will eventually make changes in Dota2 (remakes, new content, etc), but when we do that it will be when you guys are actively playing it and seeing/testing the changes directly.

As the tournament is being played, I'll do my best to clarify things whenever it is needed and as time allows.

phantom lancer is in dota 2 one of the leaked patch notes from awhile ago listed him and some tweaks they did to him cause his illusions were spawning to many other illusions and pretty much filled up the map
