It's not you. Dota is slower than HoN, which is why certain skills had to be sped up when ported over (e.g. shell surf).

DoTA2 is to the customer a promise of a clone of DoTA and some concept art. So if DoTA2 is better than HoN it would make DoTA better than HoN.
This would imply that anyone that replies to this thread either can't like DoTA2 more than HoN or they paid for a game that they don't play - but why would anyone that doesn't play HoN post on this forum?

My opinion on this subject may change when I have two retail games to compare with each other.

The main thing for me was that it is server based, i always had lag/delay in dota and with hon it's perfect gameplay. Of course other things like better graphics, more heroes, rebindable hotkeys (lord knows the dota hotkeys are awful, even for spells) and much more...would be intrested to try dota 2 tho...

A lot of people are playing HoN simply because its the "next-gen" of DotA. That doesn't mean HoN > DotA. It just means it has higher production values being that it isn't made out of an map editor built decades ago and people wants to play something that looks like it is made for todays standards.

When DotA 2 comes out people would move on with that. Of course that isn't to say there aren't any HoN fans obviously, but I can bet 70-90% of those are new to the genre itself and did not play/enjoyed DotA due to the graphics limitation in the first place.

What is funny is that there are 69 heroes right now. Out of the 69, *If I did not count wrong* 18 heroes are made by S2. A handful of them are heavily inspired by DotA.

There are 119 items in the game. *If I did not count wrong* 6 Items are made by S2 and that is counting Major Totem.

My point is that a huge part of HoN that you love are from DotA. You can be a fanboy for HoN sure, but there are no logical reason that you should be hating on DotA when HoN itself relies heavily on

DotA's contents. Remember, S2 decided to make HoN mainly because they love DotA and want to see it taken to the next step. I'm sure they are excited to see what they can do with DotA 2 as

well. Watching both games develop, and play them both is the best choice.

Ironic because HoN kept most of the game mechanics from DotA. I don't know how YOU accepted that with your mindset.

People don't seem to understand that DotA is still evolving. It is keeping the mechanics from the first game, but Icefrog is constantly making changes to the game. For instance, how gold works in the past few maps, and making night more interesting by implementing skills that benefit from it. Who really thinks that just because they keeping everything from DotA in the beginning, they aren't going to make big changes/big patches like what they have been doing so far?

Simply putting it Dota2's plattaform will be lightyears ahead of the savage2 engine hon is running on. Valve can do so much more with steam and top of the market online game technology than what S2 can afford. This is not a competetion of what game is better because in the end the gameplay will probably be exactly the same as its not hard to code a copy of another game. Its a competetion of who can incorporate more nifty things into their copy of dota. Things such as who has more stable servers, who has less bugs, better resource management (better graphics less hardware requirement) achievements, avatars and those things that gameinformer is talking about such as interactive guides, and coaches. Things that valve can easily already do with their superior technology and already established matchmaking system through steam.

I love S2 and their communication with the community, i love them as a componay they remind me of early blizzard. But sadly this is a battle of resources not of who makes a better game because in the end iam pretty sure the gameplay will be nearly indentical.

I never said about graphics being better in either game. In fact i think both games will have comparable graphics but i have no doubt in my mind that the source engine will have alot better resource management and will be able to deliver the same graphics with less. In regards to hon being gank based and dota being farm based, i do not know as i havent followed dota in ages but that can easily be adressed with a single patch with a few changes here and there and i have no doubt in my mind that the developers working in dota 2 know that ganking is more fun to watch and play.

Integrating a Noob-friendly environment was suggeted many times in general and suggestions forum, still we dont have anything that could aproach.

Many gaming web pages thought HoN was a great competitive game, but the lack of noob-friendly stuff that could improove someones gaming skill (converted into noobs ruining a game and people raging and calling them names) made a possible 9/10 score turn into a 6.5-7.5 over 10 score.

This is reflected in the usual QQ threads in the forum.

I bet that implementing advance tutorials, coach system with rewards for the coach, a challenge mode where you are given certain objectives against an AI controlled enemy; to name a few could increase drastically HoNs player base and obviouslly the peoples overview of this great game.

S2 should take concern about this matter.

The problem here is that instead of making a proper suggestion thread, taking as a base ideas from other titles (such as the forthcomming DotA2 which, to the present date, doesn't have any of the ideas implemented yet, mind you it is in development), people rather play Nostradamus and foresee the end of HoN with DotA2 and LoL as 2 of the Knights of the Apocalypse - which seems to be what this represents in their minds to guys writing these posts.

In the end, the backlash they generate through random trolls completely (or almost always at least) negates the value of the actual suggestion they try to embue in their predictions.

I have used steam, i used to be an avid CS player. Yes steam is not problem free but i dont think there is anything outthere that is problem free. Yet steam is probably one of the best if not best online gaming plataforms.

I can spectate a game while on vent with you and tell you what you're doing wrong anyway. I fail to see why adding this as a feature will make much of a difference.
The differences are huge.

For one thing if I have no friends who play dota 2 and I'm new to the game I can join a queue and find someone who joined a queue to teach me about the game. For another, people WILL volunteer to gain cosmetic rewards in game.

Now this system isn't perfect. Shitty people who don't know the game well are going to sign up to coach and misinform the new players, but the idea is still a good one.

What new games are using the source engine that you like so much? I have not seen a Valve game release for a long time. I think Portal 2 will be the next one.

How will feel if Valve decides to both charge up front for the game, like HoN, and then have microtransactions, like LoL. The reason I ask is because that is how TF2 is now, and it looks like the direction Valve is taking with future games.

I love how people quote me on stuff iam not even saying. I never said there are new games using steam engine i just said there are already established popular games such as cs:s that are far more popular than savage1/2 will ever be. Simply putting it i dont think anyone can deny source engine is superior to the k2 engine and to top it they have steam an already widely used and popular online matchmaking gaming plattaform that is superior to what S2 can do with thier matchmaking. And yes proably they will have micro transactions but i sincerly doubt they will have anything that impacts actual gameplay. if they do iam on same boat as many ohters and will stay with hon.

So as of this date DoTA2 is better? Seems no one even bothered to read the initial post. This thread was started because I'm sick of DoTA2-fanboyism when we can't really compare the two.

Hon does not need a tutoring system. There is already plenty of information to help those who are bad become less bad.

Anyway, the system is going to be worthless for the following reasons. If there is no incentive to tutor then no one will do it, as no good player wants to watch a noob play for 45 minutes when they could play themselves. If there is incentive to tutor it will attract many people who aren't qualified. The only people who are interested in tutoring are probably bad, and will not get what they are looking for from such a system.

Heroes of Newerth is to the customers a playable retail game that have little over 30,000 people online at this moment.

DoTA2 is to the customer a promise of a clone of DoTA and some concept art. So if DoTA2 is better than HoN it would make DoTA better than HoN.
This would imply that anyone that replies to this thread either can't like DoTA2 more than HoN or they paid for a game that they don't play - but why would anyone that doesn't play HoN post on this forum?

My opinion on this subject may change when I have two retail games to compare with each other.

WTF? There is a massive amount of people who do think Dota is better than HoN. Dota is very old though.
Plenty of people think Starcraft was perfect, but when stuff gets 10+ years old, you kind of want an upgrade.

I think your argument actually works, only the other way around. HoN is an attempt to recreate the magic of dota on a newer engine, it only exists because of dota, and the main difference between the two is that HoN has better graphics, half as many heroes and is less balanced.

I hate the word fanboy, I am a consumer, and I will always consume the best product. If HoN really is better than Dota 2, then I will keep plaiyng it.

HoN has quite a bit of unique heroes but something tells me that DotA 2 will have more heroes than HoN currently has when it's released.

hon had the second mover advantage they built up on dota improving graphics and other significant changes.

If DotA2 solves all the problems that the original DotA had (e.g. changing to qwer for abilities) then ill be happy to go back to my old friend

I came to HON because it was a more modern DOTA. We had reconnect, stats, and leaver protection. The things that DOTA pubs couldn't provide. The downside was we did not have all the original DOTA heroes. I guarantee you that DOTA 2 will have all of those things with ALL of the original heroes. Many of the people that came from DOTA are going to go to DOTA 2. I for one will at least try DOTA 2.

The only reason I'm playing this game right now is because DotA sucks. Not gonna lie, DotA sucks but the concept it amazing. The Warcraft 3 engine, the limited customizability, the graphics, the lag, all of that is awful. Therefore DotA is awful.
S2 was just lucky enough to pick up such a great concept of a game and brought in gamers of all sorts. S2 did a good job in developing HoN to fix the flaws of DotA, although now HoN is getting sh1ttier and sh1ttier.

When DotA 2 comes out, I'll be trying that out for sure.

Valve develops their own games as well as developing a platform called Steam so other publishers and developers can sell their product to PC gamers.

MW2 was developed by Infinity Ward, Published by Activision and sold via retail and Steam. However, what's different here is that MW2 requires you to use Steam as a platform to play, that way it's controlled (used to ban/prevent piracy)

MW2 being horrible online in terms of lag is not Steam's problem, it's Kotick's

i mean, if you're talking graphics ofcourse you are right, but DotA still has alot more heroes and a more fun gameplay.
I think S2's best chance is that they already know pretty much what heroes DOTA2 will be based on, so make sure HoN gets more competitive heroes for that scene and insert some LOL factor heroes for HoN of its own, like the DotA techies in a HoN cover. since you cant copy techies from what i understand.
I think if S2 plays it right, HoN will be there bigger game out there, otherwise DOTA 2 will dominate it ofcourse.

It seems you are forgetting the fact that not only is HoN is of the same game genre as DotA is, but that it's also heavily inspired by DotA. The problem lies in the fact that some people moved on from DotA to HoN only because they wanted a better looking version of DotA which would offer competitive gameplay, but with DotA 2, we'll see a whole revamp of the DotA most of us liked with the same heroes we're accustomed to. Now, what tells you people won't want to switch from HoN to DotA2, to retrieve the good old game they liked but with up to date graphics ? HoN offered a more customizable platform but since Valve is taking over, DotA will have a lot of new features and there will be a lot more possibilities of customizations without the limitations of the old WC3 engine.

People who troll would only be able to do it for a few games before being branded as one. I would also suggest that em and non-em coaches be separated, and that PSR limits be added to coaching. Bads teaching bads only leads to worse things.

Valve always made easy to learn - hard to master games which you could pick up and instantly play because they are so intuitive.

The coaching system is a system just like RAP; designed as a work around rather then a real solution to the problem (DotA is too complicated for casuals).

to teach newbs how to play they just need to watch lots of honcast

not only do the casters teach u some interesting things but watching professional players play will teach you good tricks

also bring back matchmaking games and maybe there wont be so many ppl raging at noobs since they will be playing with ppl at their skill lvl most of the time

coaching system is dumb why not just make a channel/chat/forum(probably already is 1) to teaching ppl how to play if they are not dedicated enough to research some stuff on how to become better than they deserve to be made fun of

it takes 5-10 min to find a forum thread that will give you some useful tips

I figure I'll just pick a random dota2 thread to post this, but do you dota2 obsessors realize dota2 was just *ANNOUNCED*? It's not going to be out for at least 6 months, and very very likely even longer. It could easily be over a year before you get to play it. The release date on some sites even says 12-13 2011. Valve has a bad track record when it comes to announce date - release. So just forget about it and focus on HoN and all the Dota2 hype will die down when people realize it's not coming out for a while.

Alright, S2 gonna have to face a giant - VALVE. Which has had great reputation of "stealin" the works of indies. Though I'm a great fan of them, it's still funny when you think about the list of their past games: Half-Life 1-2, Counter-Strike, Left4Dead, Team Fortress 2, Alien Swarm. Appart from Half-Life, they were all originally generated from indie's works. And now that list will increase by 1 - DOTA2.

I would like to have a discussion about the future of HON:

In my opinion, HON should change the direction of its gameplay in order to avoid a direct competition with Dota2. Since Dota 2 will carry the same gameplay of Dota. Moreover, HON will hardly survive the foot steps of such giant as Valve (with the aid of IceFrog).

Having try the first product of S2 - Savage, I fully believe in their ability to create creativity and originality. In the past, they might have copy Dota because of the example from Savage - a great game but lack marketing. However, it is time for HON to move away from the shadow of Dota, otherwise, it will be doomed.

Or S2 may have another option: Turnover was enough to cover costs and it even made nice profit. So why give a damn about the game anyway.
