Valve is pretty cool, but HoN is a great game. They'll have a tough time trying to top it, especially if they're stuck with that Icefrog guy holding them back so their "Dota 2" ends up being more like "Dota Source".

FINALLY. You deserve a medal. That's the thing which I repeated several time but nobody cares about logical arguments. It's a fact that Valve is indubitably one of the best developers (Blizzard and Valve actually, EA only spams flops besides NFS/FIFA and those charts).
You can't name ONE SINGLE product from Valve which flopped or wasn't in the charts. Don't forget that HoN is based on DotA. S2games just took over the idea and improved it with the advantage of Engine/Graphics which attracted more superficial players.
I'm not saying that S2Games are sh!t or that they didn't made a good job there but IceFrog got reinforcements and now getting "his" (It's Aeon of Strife actually) masterpiece back. I don't wish that HoN will die and S2games being stomped by Valve but I'm just saying that it's realistic. I'm also glad that Marc DeForest didn't went All-in with HoN because he might foresee a potential loss to Valve (but props to Marc that he is still brave enough to mess with Valve). Since he thought about it and S2Games is making an unannounced project right now which should be done by the release of DotA2. It's just an "assurance" if DotA will steal HoN's players. I'm being only realistic if I say that S2Games is no match for Valve (resources,reputation,all games so far,developers and so on).
I hope that S2Games really accepted the challenge (fielding doesn't look good) and will take them on. Good Luck,S2.

TF2 was wonderfully competitive upon release, I played avidly. I won't deny they've killed it since then.

CS:S has and has had a highly competitive scene, whether 1.6 fans will admit it or not.

It's easy to dominate the scenario when you compete against a game without a good engine. And I know these people, just like me, will move to DotA 2 when all those disadvantages DotA All-Stars had are gone.

DotA is a 100% remake though. They're keeping EVERYTHING. Not to mention that down the line, if they're going to change anything, they're probably listening to Icefrog considering his track record(and the fact that he'll cling to that sucker for all he's worth, it's his baby after all).

Valve is going to go after the biggest block of gamers, pubs. To go after pubs they are going to have to dumb it down. Look back a few posts. I've played it. I've asked a dev directly. 100% port of Dota 1. Same feel, same maps, still has denies, same items, same heroes, same numbers, same neutrals in the forest, different engine, newer art. They made Magina into a double katana ninja badass too.

Icefrog Didn't make a map, he was given it to take care of, Aeon of Strife in starcraft was where the idea was born, Guinsoo would late follow up with his own to update it and make a warcraft 3 version of the map.

They have a point though, they actually set the bar really high with their engine and other conveniences. Even going to play StarCraft 2 I find it appalling the difference in conveniences such as reconnect, netcode (one person lags bad enough in StarCraft and the game craps out for everyone) and so on. Plus it's valve, they'll have a hat shop to dwarf HoN's within a week. Oh yes, and pre-order hats for TF2 AND Portal 2.

Haha, no **** sherlock and I thought they will make player sided hosts so everyone can go back to maphacking again. It's also made for a high capacity of players since you WILL be able to join a currently running game (with 1 minute delay to prevent cheating) so they will need strong servers for that. A standard-player won't be able to offer such a good server.

S2 adopted me and the first year was great, but once the home was finally built (aka when beta ended) and we moved in it became "GIVE US YOUR GODDAMN TRUST FUND MONEY YOU ****ING ORPHAN" at which point they proceeded to break all the things in the house and give us new chairs with 2 and a half legs (calling them 'balanced')

Then Valve came along, a group of adults that know how to run a secure, safe house with no false pretenses.

Except Valve hasn't done **** yet, and you're just another malcontent putting Valve on some pedestal.

If DotA 2 is good, people will play it. If it isn't, people won't. But seeing all these mad nerds fellate Valve before it's even released anything is getting really annoying.

2 years from now you'll be posting some thread on the Valve boards whining piteously about how DotA2 left your wallet's anus distended and bleeding, and preaching about how the upcoming Heroes of Newerth 2 will blow DotA2 out of the water.

For a very generous rounding of numbers, 50% will play DotA 2 and 25% will play HoN and LoL. It won't be instant, rather a few months or even a year will pass.
