View Full Version : 2 melee heroes in one lane, always a bad idea?

In more competitive games is it ever acceptable to put two melee heroes in the same lane. I ask because I usually play with my brother who normally plays pestilence while I might play a melee agi character such as dark lady.
Can be done if they're both strong laners, Pharoah/Bloodhunter for instance. However if you play a carry like Dark Lady you're better off with dedicated babysitter/support like shaman or pollywog.

In some situations it's a viable option. For example you could use two stunning heroes such as Magmus and Pebbles, or you could use Magmus + jeraziah (Magmus stun + Jera heal) etc.. It's just a rule of thumb to use 1 ranged at each lane I suppose and makes things easier exspecially in public play.

Or you could go the Oxxy Wacka method of Pebbles + Hammerstorm. :O

Pharoah? In competitive games? Hmmm
I can think of a few combos
Elect + Swift
Behemoth + Madman

Elec + Jera is probably the combo you will see most.
Pharoah is picked for competitive play because his hellfire-like ability deals a lot of damage and destroys other initiation heroes like Behe/Tempest

Wait a sec, I may be misinterpreting you, but are you really trying to insinuate that Pharaoh is not a good hero in competitive games?

Pharaoh is a terrible version of Clock, so no, not really.
Two melee lanes get destroyed by a lot of of combos, a single support character like Hellbringer or Demented Shammy can destroy them.

Pebbles and Pestilence work well together. 4 second AOE stun/slow always a good thing (and Pebbles can chuck Pest to initiate)

That would only be good against another dual melee lane. Otherwise, since they have no real ranged abilities to close distance, they could easily get harassed down.

Behemoth + Madman
Behemoth+madman would get stomped by any half decent lane.
And pharaoh is really great in competitive games, but he is definetly better solo'ing a lane.
Elec+swift is a great pub combo but i dunno, it is counterable. Swift would do better with glacius or plague rider.

Pharaoh is brutal in pretty much all games. In competitive he's especially strong, raping disablers and being one of the most powerful gankers in the game.
Not to mention he's without a doubt the most fun hero to play.

Pharoah is a fantastic pick, seeing as killing them outside the fountain effectively adds the run back to the fountain onto their respawn timer. His periodic stun is extremely powerful for chasing heroes and as a disable, and he has massive harrasing potential (WoM can drain about 100 or so mana if used right at level 1, which can decimate lanes in pubs at least). And he's really fun to play.
Early game pharoah can create 40-50 or more second effective respawns at least before level 10.
Though I can't see any good melee/melee combos that can't be fairly easily countered to be honest. Maybe pebbles with another hero due to him being able to close the gap easily.
For pubs, two melee heroes can be extremely powerful if they're both strong laners, but I don't think it would work against very good players.
Off-topic, does anyone know whether SotM is ever usable with pharoah? I've found it just makes him a horrible initator in exchange for an escape mechanism that will probably be on cooldown after team fights anyway. This could just be because I'm terrible though :)

It's generally bad to have two melee carries in a lane, especially if they're not particularly durable.
Pharaoh is a terrible version of Clock, so no, not really.

you are wrong on both points. Pharaoh is an excellent hero and is being picked in competetive play.
Two melees are completely fine and valid if they are of correct composture to wreck ****

Pebbles/Tiny is a 1-2 hero, he puts his 2 nukes and then has nothing to contribute for 10-15 seconds. Not to mention he needs a quick dagger if he is to do anything.
The best thing he can do is to solo mid and rune whore + gank lanes. But so can Pharaoh for example, and he can both control runes and gank better.

No, pebbles is way better in a duo-lane, and with his recent buff of 10s cooldown on chuck, he is quite strong early on, specially because we miss some gank power (puck, lion, NA, qq) on the pool... And getting blinkdagger with pebbles is like... 2 times easier than behemoth, for example...

Double melee will only work well with both having stuns ... even then if they arent dominating the lane or threatening to dominate (aka oom) they will get harassed off of it. Id have to say only possible exceptions would include accursed/jeraziah/electrician because each of them has a fairly strong presence in a lane despite no stun for accursed/jera.

Many double melee lanes can work so no it's not always like "OMG 4 MELEES WE LOSE!"
Legionnaire is a good double melee hero.

I wish i could slap you for this, I truly wish I could, this makes me want to play pharoah religiously again instead of dicking around with learning new heroes.

Electrician and Swiftblade are both pretty crap in competitive play.
Behemoth Madman is a terrible lane.

*Dark Lady scores a kill with Taint Soul*
Announcers: "Wtf was that"
"I don't know"
"Was that... "
"Her slow?"
"I know it has a DoT..."
Seriously guys?
EDIT: Best part was when he said that the stacked neutrals were "probably 4k gold." Each spawn is ~300g, they only had ~6-7 stacks which is around 2k tops.

Generally no, you want to avoid doing dual melee lane, but it can be pulled off if both melee heroes are threatening enough to keep the enemy on their toes so they can't get too aggressive. Be sure to creep pull or you'll get very few lasthits as a dual melee lane.
Desodesto
11-30-2009, 12:25 PM
The only dual melee team in the game that works is blacksmith and blacksmith in a duplicate hero game. "Too bad it's me blacksmiths!"

Double melee can work, but they would have the most trouble against a really strong laner like ds.
Accursed would be a good hero for a double melee lane... I would imagine him and maliken would have enough killing power to win a lane, especially if they were able to pull.

To run a double melee lane successfully is more than just getting proper hero picks.
You need to have confidence as well as trust between each other, and that ultimately shows in lane. Your opponent will just bully you if you play conservatively/passively. Always be aggressive and take advantage of mistakes if you think you'll come out on top. Letting range units whittle you down as you don't go for last hits is the last thing you want to do.

My worst Nightmare against 2 melee Heros was Behemoth + Peppels
Both had this Mana giving ring and they beat the **** out of us.
Flying Behemoth ..... Take cover !!!!!!!! :D After that he stomps, pepples came in stun second time and Behe blows us away with fissure or Ulti

If you just harassed them a lot early on, ala not letting them farm their rings too fast, that wouldn't have been too bad.
Mana is a real handicap for both of them.

unless one of the melee is legionaiire then things might be a lil better, though he can get harassed by nukes though.
