Is there a way ingame to get ur character to stop moving so i can actually focus on the targets to deny. I seem to be having a problem doing a ranged deny on my creeps. If there is an easier way to do this I;m open for new ideas.

You can hit (H) for hold position.

This stops them from auto-attacking. I have also heard from someone else that you can right click (not right-click A) one of your own ranged creeps to stop you from auto-attacking

I always stand behind the creeps and click with my mouse repeadetly on the ground next to my hero. So i take little steps each time. This way I dont attack and I (almost) keep standing on the same spot.

You can also spam H ofc

Wait till they're at low health, click A, click on the creep.

You do not have to spam H. If you just press it your hero will simply stand still

rebind Hold into something useful, like d or f

Thanks for the responses. i will try that out today. AVA thanks for that wonderful response by the way lol. I've done that but it seems my character continued to move towards the creep and not deny hit it.

How To: Successfully deny creeps.

Step 1. Rebind your Hold action to a more useful key such as spacebar (or a key of your choice). The default is H. With most of your spells being around qwer1234 it's going to be quite a reach for you to hold without remapping the key. Also, make sure that your life bars are turned on. If not, you'll have to hold Alt to view the life of all units.

Step 2. Get near your units. While you are moving you will not auto-attack so don't worry about that.

Step 3. When you get in position press the button you bound Hold to (eg: spacebar).

Step 4. Press A. This is the command for Attack. It will give you crosshairs.

Step 5. Aim at the unit (friendly for deny, enemy for last hit) and click when they are low life. If they are low enough, you will accomplish your task. If they aren't low enough you will damage them but not kill them and possibly make it easier for your opponent.

Step 6. Immediately after your attack press the Hold command again. If the unit died you will begin auto-attacking other creeps and we're back at square 1. Either way, go back to Step 4.

Practice these steps in practice mode until you are proficient with it.

WARNING: Holding means you will stand there no matter what happens. You will not attack, you will not run, you will do nothing. You will stand there and die if someone begins attacking you. Please remember to watch your screen and move back when necessary.

Additional Information:
Melee heroes have an easier time dealing sufficient damage because they can get the Loggers Hatchet.
Ranged heroes have an easier time with positioning and hitting multiple units because they don't have to move between hits.
Ranged heroes only receive 25% XP of a denied kill.
Melee heroes only receive 50% XP of a denied kill.
All heroes receive 100% XP of a last hit kill. No bonux XP is given but gold is given.
Ranged heroes should focus on last hits over denies in all circumstances.
Melee heroes that are facing other melee heroes should focus on last hits over denies.
Melee heroes that are facing ranged heroes should focus on denies over last hits.

Deny,

Thank you much for the informative reply. I will run some practice games tonight and try this out. Been have to run mid alot due to my teams selection of heroes and want to be able to hold me own better than I am right now. Thank You.

One more comment to add on to Deny's. If you are using a ranged hero, the range actually matters due to projection speed. So if you are very close to a creep, you will attack slightly faster than if you are attacking at your maximum range. Of course, getting closer means you are closer to the enemy.

Isn't holding 'S' the same as holding 'H'. I use 'S' to creep deny, the good thing about this is that you dont need to remap your keyboard, becasue 'S' is right next to 'A' (which you have to press anyways). Not entirly sure if it's the same thing though.

i've noticed you said something about stopping movement so you can focus on denying. Is your camera autofollowing your char? cause thats not supposed to happen. Press V, backslash, and backspace.

No.

S is for stop movement. This is an immediate command with no duration. It will stop whatever you are currently doing. Such as, if you are walking forward or preparing to attack, it will stop you. If you let go/stop pressing S you will resume auto-attacking if enemies are near.

H is hold movement. When you press H nothing else will happen until you tell it to.

H > S.

When you feel you've got the hang of denying creeps with A + left click, you can start practicing animation cancelling. Imagine a creep is 2 hits away from dying and no other creeps are attacking it and your opponent is well aware of this fact as well. You can A + left click on the creep and then just before you do the actual attack you can press S or H to cancel the animation and then click away. Your opponent will try and time his attack to land directly after yours, leaving you to get the last hit on the creep.

Also it's not a good idea to press H and just stand there, waiting until a creep gets low. You should be constantly moving around to avoid enemy projectiles like Devourer's hook or Valkyries javelin. Everything takes a great deal of practice, so the earlier you start, the better you will become.

staying still can be bad b/c enemy heroes can land spells on you/ you become predictable.

what i do is shift click a bunch of paths within range of the creep, and at the moment you want to attack, do so.

you can always use H to stand still and not attack when it gets near the time you should attack. continuously moving unpredictably is something all good players should do, but it doenst mean you cant use the H button to stand for 2 seconds or less.
