View Full Version : [Guide] Video Tutorials - How to import models to Heroes of Newerth from games based on Unreal Engine
List of required programs:
3ds Max 2011 or 3ds max 8 (not 2008).
HoN export script for 3ds max 2011. (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=238517) For max 2008 use this (http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showthread.php?t=23225)
UE Viewer (http://www.gildor.org/en/projects/umodel) (i use GUI version (http://www.gildor.org/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=330.0;attach=207) but it might not support newer games. If that is the case, use latest version from the website. Here are the tutorials (http://www.gildor.org/projects/umodel/tutorials) on how to use the default version)
ActorX import script for 3ds max (http://www.gildor.org/projects/unactorx)
Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/about/introduction.html) and gimp plug-in (http://code.google.com/p/gimp-normalmap/) for creation of normal maps
Paint.net (http://www.getpaint.net/) or other image editor

Please continue, tutorial is simple and easy to understand.
Using the above I have currently imported CL4P-TP into HoN. Having some problems with materials but it is most probably my error.
Part 2 uploaded. Part 3 underway.

You don't need to delete the selection, you can just detach it then link it back.
Part 4 really helped me with fixing some errors I was having. Thanks

Something I noticed with the ActorX importer combined with the S2Exporter is that if you use the pre-built materials the exporter doesn't work correctly because it needs to have materials defined explicitly within 3ds Max.
You did define them in 3ds Max its just a notice to what happens if you don't :)

Stella working on game perfectly
about the helpers, indeed are far easier with LOCO models than WOW models... on WOW models you need to fix some buggy things with bones...
I'll launch Stella as swiftblade, and I'm making another one (surprise)
A message I let here is: this tutorial covers up everything you need to know... the export part is really really easy (it's not like WOW model where you get 500 bugs).
Thanks for the tutorial / weapons usage on model... if someone want to import, now it's easy with these resources :)
about bones - its not just loco models, all UE models. i never had any issues with them while exporting.
export is indeed easy, but people need to know how to work with materials and make proper animations (there are tricky cases)
so i'll upload more parts when i am done with exams

Indeed for the animations, had some troubles when i was creating movement clip for Batman, had to edit the animation so he would stay on the spot. Arkham Asylum also has the annoyingness of having bodies and head seperate, then havng to seperate the multimaterial objects so they would export properly...
These do help alot ^_^

there is a way to pin model to the certain spot or u just deleted movement scene and centered model?
if there is a way to pin - please tell

I just found which keys controlled the movement along the axis(in this case Y) and edited the Y value for each key to 0
^The animation started from 0 0 0(X Y Z) and moved along the Y-axis(he was running), so won't be as simple for other animations
I've tried to do it other ways but have had no luck

rean u gonna do a vid on how to edit the skills cos i have some games that have skills that i think i cud import.
skill effects are scripted in effect files. you cant import them, only make your own.
since i am dropping hon i doubt i'll finish this guide. so i release last parts - unedited and without comments.
you can ask Yurixy to finish this since not much left

Yes, and I just tested again to make sure..again.
Also, for anyone who hasn't read through blacRyu's guide (or couldn't play/pause the vid alot), the main bones to add(for HoN use) are:
_bone_overhead
_bone_centerofchest
_bone_center
_bone_head
_bone_back
_bone_chest
_bone_lefthand
_bone_righthand
_bone_leftfoot
_bone_rightfoot

This actually helped me out a lot. Whenever one of the models I was doing had multiple textures on one object, I combined the two textures into one .tga and moved the UV's to fit the new combined texture. The way you do it is way better. Thanks.

How do I know if a game's model uses the unreal engine? I'm thinking about importing models from bloodline champions or LoL, how do I know if those or other games will work?

Wikipedia has a decent sized list of games using the Unreal Engine. UEviewer although does not support all games, or has limited support..such as for MK9 PS3 T_T
Here is the UE Viewer Compatibility Table (http://www.gildor.org/projects/umodel/compat) from Gildor's website, it shows which Unreal Engine games are currently supported by his viewer.

Check blacRyu's guide, the M3 scripts/plugins is what you want.
Here's a link anyway:http://www.sc2mapster.com/assets/m3-export-plugin-3ds-max/files/
Would suggest to get 1.7b and not 1.8

Does someone actually know how to merge two diffrent animations into one? (3DS Max) Or is it possible to queue two clip files for a cast animation?

Hi, I followed the videotutorials step by step but when I export with s2 plugin I have less file then the video shows and plus the exporter ask me to create a mdf file too...seems in the tutorial the exporter working differently or I'm just doing something wrong? I'm running 3d max 2011 btw...thx!

Explain this better plz, I think this is my problem

are you exporting each clip separately?
for each animation, a different export ^^

yeah I don't have problem with animations but 3ds don't export texture so I have to search it manually :/ is not a big deal but I like to understand :)
and now I'm thinkin about animations...what If I want to merge 2 animations? :)
if anybody is interested i can livestream model creation/porting process.

Did you try to export dota 2 avatars?
dont want to mess up with source engine yet.
i have tera and blade'n'soul atm.

i do wanna try that! do you know what would i need besides those files you made tutorial with?
DotA 2 is source engine, not unreal engine.
first you'll need to find a way to export dota2 models from game, then find how to import them to 3dsmax.
you need to import animations, skeletal mesh and textures
