I understand that not everyone has played dota from wc3 and others have. This might be an advantage; however, you can still learn how to play the game and become just as good as them.
Here's some general ideas to think about:
1. This is a for the most part a team game of 5v5, meaning that you are part of this 5 and as such the more you do die, the harder it is for your team to win because the other team gets a bit of gold.
2. for every kill they will get 215 gold, unless they are on a streak, so if one person gets 5 kills, they have already got 1k gold which is the same as almost 5 minutes in an easy mode game, and 10 minutes in a non-em game, so try to avoid dying.
3. Don't confuse not dying from a good judgement call, if you see a teammate that is willing to go in for a kill, dont let not dying be your priority, help them out, a kill for your team is always better then staying back all game.
4. creep whenever the game is inactive, when i say inactive, i mean the enemy heroes are creeping themselves or are at base shopping, you want to take advantage of the entire game, by killing creeps, you will gain a faster income then your opponent.
5. when your team calls for a push, finish your creep wave, then go to meet with them asap, the difference between a successful push, and a failure, is a matter of your team supporting one another, and everyone being there to put as much pressure on the enemies as possible. Once again dont forget that dying will feed the other team, but in this case you should be able to see that your team is getting slaughtered and try to make a run for it if you see its not going well.
6. Homecoming stones and post haste can be a good way to both maintain the other team from backdooring, but also its a great way to get back to a lane to get more creep kills. These are really good when you have to return to base if you are almost dead, or if you need to save a rax (barracks). Typically, ill carry one around with me when im going to push a tower, so when i finish killing a tower, i can return to the base and start pressuring another lane.
7. How to read pings is quite simple, most of the time if you see a ping its indicating there is an enemy hero/es which can mean one of two things, you should get back because they're coming to gank you, or if you see an ally coming towards that hero, you should wait for your ally to get close, then gank that enemy. There is one more type of ping but this has to do with towers, if you see a ping on a lane, typically this could mean a push, otherwise it could mean that you should push back the creeps because they are getting to close to your base. Learning how to ping, and how to read a ping is a great way to get your team to be more effective when it comes to saving a life, or killing an enemy.
8. My last comment, The one thing that should keep all of us comming back is having fun, if you constantly worry about your kills to death, the game wont be fun, so just play the game, it will start to come naturally, dont worry if you arent as good as them yet, you will be better as the time goes on, so relax and play the game.
Thanks for reading my guide, i hope it helps you alittle bit.
Feel free to critize im always open to changing my way of playing if better suggestions come up. =P
