The fight is ongoing.

A. Run / port back to base to prevent the other team from getting an extra kill from a cycling stun or stray AoE
OR
B. Hang out in the back looking for a chance to use your spells to help your team in the ongoing fight

?

If you choose "C. It depends" - what does it depend on?

C. It depends on if I think I'd die from hanging out in the back, like if enemy has portal key or a way that if they decided to go after me I couldn't escape.

Like everything in this game, it depends. This game is all about assessing your role, and there is a lot of factors to take into consideration.

How did the battle went? is your team dead, are they dead? did they take a beating?

Do they have someone who can dive into you? A legionare with a portal key could kill you from distance pretty easily.
Do they have stunners or someone who can take you by surprise?
Do you have spells who could make a decisive outcome? for example, if you are soulreaper and they are pretty beaten, then you should stay

Also, who are your teammates and how are they doing?

Is your main role DPS, can you fight on those conditions?

As you see, this game is all about the thousands of different factors, and combination of these make every game so different, you have to try to make the best decisions out of all the information you can gather to win.

I had another question in a similar vein...
Should you sacrifice yourself for your carry? Is it better to have a Pollywog dead than a Dark Lady/Zephyr/whatever?

C without a doubt.

C). It depends on everything (whether the enemies have a long range/semi-long range AoE, long-range spells, your exact HP at the time, how much regen power you have, whether you're ranged or melee....the list goes on and on)

Or D - Play as hero that can heal and heal yourself. Support your team by staying at the back of the fight and help out any way you can.

I stay for the absolute longest amount of time I can possibly get away with without dieing - always.. I've had some rediculous escapes on nothing but in chancing it to hang around I've saved/killed one more hero.

Proper use of bottle and/or power supply lets you pick B almost every time.

Also, major support like Nymphora and Jereziah let you pick B almost every time, too.

Also depends on if you think your team is gonna win the fight or not and what hero your playing. I'll hang back outa site sometimes if I think were gonna win...sometimes they might blink/tp where they think your gonna go anyway to chase b/c there gonna loose fight might as well kill you so hanging close to help not a bad idea. I used to always run but when I stay in these situations I get xp form coming back in when it's almost done and sometimes even a kill.

You should stay if you can. So often I see support heroes just turn and run. When they could hang back and buff their allies. This makes a big difference.

Nukers should also hang back if they will be able to get another shot off. Everything makes a difference and can change the tide of a battle.

Don't be a wimp. Grab your balls and man up. Just don't die doing it.

-EM mode always b.

Regular mode, the push can count for something so stay back push creeps but i wouldnt dare nearing their base with around 20% to easy to get picked off for a free kill. All that does is boost the other teams morale and that's 1 less person alive to defend a counterpush.

Almost always b

Worst case scenario, you die and feed 1 death
Best case scenario, your presence turns the battle around, and your team wins the teambattle

Obviously there are situations where staying is plain stupid, but when in doubt, stay. As long as you play smart you can contribute.

Obviously C all the time. Anyone who says 'always b IF you have a healer or can heal yourself' is really saying C.
'Staying and feeding 1 death = worst case scenario' is still 'it depends' because you could end up letting Blood Hunter Feast back up or adding extra damage to Behemoth's ult or giving an extra hit to Plague Rider's ult when the victim would have otherwise had a clear path to turn it into a failult. Or giving Soul Reaper just enough mana to ult your carry, etc. etc.

Come on, if you're any good at this game, you don't limit yourself to a "preset" list of actions. You analyze your options to the best of your ability and go as the game goes. Always.

Depends on how many heroes are alive on your team, how many is alive on their team, and the answer to teh question "Can i help my team out?" If yes, stay, if you cant do nothing, stay and get exp or b

Hmm, dying in this game is worse than getting 1 kill (xp lost, gold lost > gold won, xp gained ) so unless staying will grant 2 kills to your team or prevent 1 other team death I would retreat as a general rule.
