View Full Version : Eliminating reliance on hatchet?

Apparently, the rationale of most pro players never getting hatchet is that obviously, you don't want it on ranged heroes, and on melee heroes, you can outlasthit ranged heroes anyways. When you're melee vs melee, it becomes a sort of prisoner's dilemma where if both players blow 225 gold, they're no better off than when they started, so both players opt to get more essential items. In melee vs ranged, a shield is often preferred, or even simply more regen.

@the players here more skilled than I (1700+ plz): Do you still get hatchet very often as a melee hero? I'm thinking of trying to not rely on it so hard; I can think of far better places this early 225 can be used.

Depends on my hero, my lane partner, but most of the time I go hatchet + shield + 3x rune. Then buy 2x duck boots if I am against a heavy range team, and I am not building hotbl.

really comes down to needing it or not. It can often times pay for itself and then some, and will stay useful till mid game.

Quite frankly in the pro games you speak of, it can be more important in a mid situation, where its 1v1 and spending the gold helps with both denies and last hits equally and can ensure you win mid. Doing so puts you at 6 faster... etc.

However you are right, its not often you see it in pro games, and thats cause they last hit like bosses.

I rarely buy it, only exception being when I have random gold.

Get it on carries where you plan to spend a significant time on farming. Unless you're on a hero who naturally have a high last hitting ability, like Predator, Gladiator or Maliken (who are all more or less also early game heroes so you won't stay in forest for 30 min.) In other words, I'd get it on Dark Lady, Madman, Scout etc. I don't think it's necessary on most gankers; Pebbles and Devo have crazy str gain and can last hit well without it, and Tundra, Pharaoh etc have some of the best animations in the game.

it really depends on your hero you have chosen, your laning partner and the heroes you'll be facing.

most likely you wont be needing a hachet on these heroes: :arma: :glad: :tund: :pand: :pest: :krak: :pred::keep::ramp::devo::phar::mora::pebb::accu::b alp::hamm::damp::gaun::trem::accu::jera::dead::bla c::zeph: :mali:nomad

these heroes have good/strong base damage and good/strong early game which allows them to be more aggressive in lane - a buckler/stats/more regen is a lot better on these heroes.

you most likely need it on: :bloo::dark::scou::chro::nigh::legi::warb::mage::f ayd::madm::sand:

These heroes either have no early game compared to "normal" heroes and are best off just farming for middle game in lane/jungle, and not diving for hero kills etc. or they're melees who can solo mid lane.

some heroes can function well without hatchet but needs last hits aka :madm:, a hero with low attack damage, but he has his stalk as long as he has some mana.

I pretty much never get hatchet. A Shield is much better to sustain harass, and even if I don't fear getting harassed,
I simply buy 2x +3 Mainstat, which also helps last hitting all the while also enabling me to bash on the opposing heroes.

I essentially see it as a :scou: like farmer item or a jungler item, it pays itself off very quickly that way. I'm trying to get out of the habit of buying it otherwise.
