Hi all,
Sorry, I was never a DOTA player so I'm not too familiar with all the terms used. What does it mean when someone says they are debuffed? For example Arachna supposedly can use her hardened carapace to debuff herself...does that mean it removes any spell cast on him? So if he's silenced he can debuff it? Thanks for any insight!

a debuff is a spell used on an enemy that can do various things. like lower attack speed/dmg or a stat. slow is also a debuff. arachna's carapace removes debuffs, not sure which ones though but im pretty sure its most of them

well buff's are positive conditions added to someone while debuff's are negative conditions.
electricians ulti will purge debuff's from allies or buff's from enemies. im pretty sure arachna removes only debuff's from herself. so she is escentially purging herself, i hope that clears it up a bit.
basically in DotA things that removed buff/debuff's where called purge. nullfire blade in dota was often refered to as purge blade.

A buff is a status effect applied by a spell (not an aura like Soulstealer's or by Demonic Breastplate). For example, if Arachna uses her W skill after Demented Shaman casts roots on her, she removes the slowing status effect applied by the spell (not sure if it also removes the DOT though). However, that ability won't BLOCK a spell, and only dispells the debuffs you have on you at the moment you activate it.

Can it debuff a silence? or disable?
A debuff is a negative effect. You debuff an enemy, you remove a debuff from yourself/an ally. Stun is not a debuff, but its own effect. Once you are silenced you can't cast a spell to debuff and so you cannot use it to remove silence.

Buff/Debuff are nouns in general, not verbs. Though sometimes people will ask for a "buff"; asking for a buff to be cast on them.
A buff is a positive status effect that is cast on a hero.
A debuff is a negative status effect that is cast on a hero.
Blacksmith's Frenzy is a buff. It "buffs" up the hero, making them better.
Silence is a debuff. It "debuffs" the hero, making them worse.
