Windows Sidebar Gadget in Beta is available. v2.0.0 - Last update: 23 January 2011

Thank you to Stromfresser for update.

What this tool do: Display your HoN stats and refresh automatically (each 10 mins). You have your stats live on your desktop.
Any feedback is appreciated.

The Gadget can:
- Show your stats (PSR, TSR, rTSR, Rank, Won, Lost, K/D ratio).
- Auto-Refresh each 10 minutes or manual when you click your name.
- Type any player name to show their stats.
- Click on your name and a flyout will show you more stats server and refresh the current display.
- Launch the game Heroes of Newerth with a button (or link to any other .exe on your computer. ex: HoN Mod Manager).
- In the options you can verify if a new version is available.

- You have Windows XP and would like to use this gadget? Well you can install this (http://joshoon.deviantart.com/art/Windows-Sidebar-Real-one-Pack-75626472?loggedin=1). I tested it and it is working. However this is a 3rd party software, if you have problems or questions, ask them to the person who created it. I can't help you with this product.

How to install or update:
1- Download file from here (http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=7cca4dcb-2d55-4202-9d6e-dda379f8054d).
2- Double-click the downloaded file -> All ok!
3- If you don't see the gadget: Click on the + button to open the Gadgets selection window.
4- Drag and drop the Gadget named 'Heroes of Newerth Stats tracking' on your desktop.

I'm aware that bugs could occur. Please tell me if it is the case. I tested on 4 computers and worked OK.

If Gadget goes well and reception is good from community, I will add later:
1- Bigger Gadget with more stats when undocked from the sidebar
2- More settings
3- Better errors handling so you will understand why something doesn't work.
X - Flyout that will show a lot more stats if you click a button (Done, need to improve GUI)
X - Heroes usage (Win ratio, K/D/A, etc.)
X - SMR vs PSR stats

Known bug and errors:
1- Auto-Refresh is not good. It doesn't keep your choice of data and also the gadget goes white for 2 or 3 sec. I will improve it.

PS from Stromfresser: There are some slight differences between the TSR values calculated by this Gadget and the values calculated ingame by mods like "True Skill Rating mod" and "xStats". That's because the game does not calculate as precisely as JavaScript in the Gadget does (I tested it with MS Excel )

Hi,

Currently, for fun, I am programming a windows sidebar gadget so it will always display my stats of HoN, even if I am not playing. I will also include an option to change the player it shows the stats, so you can look at your friends stats, or the best players stats or whatever.

Currently I use the stats from honage.com, which I am not sure I can do so...

But in the last sticky of "things you are working on" you said:

Well... right now I parse some text from the Honage.net website. I don't know where those guys takes their stats... I will ask them.

All I need to know is how your data will be displayed. Will it be XML, will I have access to the database. Or will I need to parse html code.
But before you guys try to help me, I think it is better that I show you the final product when it will be finished... So you will see if yes or no you should help me and if I'm able to actually do something with all that.

I'll try to do my best with Honage website and see how it goes. I need to learn Windows sidebar code anyway (which doesn't seem complicated..) and I need to do a nice Graphic interface with your Fan site kit.

Right now, I have something working that reloads each 10 minutes (I may change this to 30, or 5 or ....) and display some stats. Here is a screenshot:

Well this topic is not about the fact that we should all disable windows sidebar or not. ;)

BUT

Myself I removed the sidebar when I first had Vista. However, now that I have 2 screens and that the sidebar doesn't slow down my pc at all, I find useful to show this tool always on top on my second screen. I also have a web page open with a Hero guide.

I'm aware that this tool may not be useful for everyone, but if it is for like 50 users, then I'm happy!

I was thinking to do an iPhone application for the same behavior (similar to the WoW armory app), but this require a lot of coding and learning... so I will start with this. :)

it would be AWESOME if there was a little box that popped up (like it does with hon open) that said "1 new im" with a little teaser text.. becuase often times i sit around waiting for my friend to be ready to play.. and he has to either call me or send a ton of messages so i hear the slight "ding" noise

FYI,

This method for getting stats will not work in the near future. We will be changing where and how you can get stats when we remove this ability to give you guys some better options. (query only specific stats, etc)

We've noticed that you guys query the stats from our master server very often and that's something we don't really want hitting that specific server.

Yeah, I checked google gadget code and it seems a lot more user friendly than windows gadget code.. like function already there for you for this kind of query. Wanna make it available for us to download?

When you enter your name, the stats should load and display right away.
After your username is loaded in, each 10 minutes it reloads and check the server.
I need to know how often the servers are refreshed... If they are each 30 mins, it is useless. If it is each 2 min, I will do a refresh button.

I am really sorry to hear that. I don't have windows 7... It will only be shipped to me on October... I can't really troubleshoot this, but I will for sure try to get some information of what may have changed for Windows 7.

You may want to look at this screenshot, on my pc it is working...: sesnut on Windows Sidebar (http://www.etdashou.com/hontheside/images/HoN_the_side_sesnut.png). By the way (if that helps...) be sure to type your username exactly at you see it in the forums. Like right now it is all lowercase sesnut - not Sesnut. But I'm pretty sure this is not your problem.

Well this is Beta, and I need this kind of feedback. I will do my best to look at Win 7 compatibility.

If it helps at all, when I open the settings.htm There is no "ok" button. It's just has an entry box for user name. I file->saved my name there, but I'm reading through the script and I'm guessing my 'ok' box is missing.

Wait, u open directly the file Settings.html? Like double click on the file settings.html? Because of what u tell me (and I tried the exact same thing) this is what I get (page with no OK button) - and it is normal.

You need to Copy the folder \HoN.Gadget\ in the zip file you download to c:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets (It will look like this after copy: c:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\HoN.Gadget) and then Open your Windows Sidebar and click on the + icon at the top, where u see a list of available gadget. A big HoN logo will appear. Drag and drop.

I'm aware that this may be complicated to do, and because of that, I will create you guys a nice installer so you simply need to double click a file and everything is done for you. For that, I need to submit my gadget to Microsoft Windows. Stay tuned. I might remove the download link if too much people have difficulty installing the gadget by copy paste of folder.

A simple double click now adds the mod. Easier than extracting the folder and manually copy it to your program files.

You did nothing wrong, it is the installer that is not well done.

Go to the folder C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Wind ows Sidebar\Gadgets\

There you will found a stupid folder with something like ~0000 at the end... In that same folder their is the GOOD folder that you need to move to C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Wind ows Sidebar\Gadgets\.

I will resend a submission of the installer.... you can manually fix it, or wait a couple of hours please.

Gadget is now on v1.0.3

I updated the flyout display. I will try to do a very nice display in next patch, with buttons and I will re-organized the stats display.
I also re-worked the network code. Next patch should also have better network handling and better error messages.

I am waiting windows approval for this update... it is long. Right now the file is on my server.

I updated the gadget to version 1.0.4.

You will have better graphic.
But most important, in the option menu, you will see if your version if up-to-date. IF not, a link is provided to update your gadget. This is important because S2 will change their server and I will need to update the gadget.

If I'm right, I will be able to show a lot of interesting stats right on your desktop. But I need to wait until I have more news about their servers.

Ok I've done it. You can now activate if you want a button that will launch Heroes. This is a choice you have. You can remove this in the option. I made it as an option because people may find this annoying.
I will try to update the gadget on windows live gallery.

So, new version is out and I included an option to show/hide a button to start your Heroes of Newerth game. You need to specify where on your PC is the hon.exe file. Usually within C:\Program Files (x86)\Heroes of Newerth\hon.exe in Vista or C:\Program Files\Heroes of Newerth\hon.exe in XP.

I'm aware that not everyone would like this feature. So you can decide if yes or no it will be shown in the options.

This kind of feature may create security access... like windows doesn't want a gadget to start an exe... However all my tests were successful. Please post any bugs if you find any.

Well, where I was taking the data, it seems like its broken. I don't know if it is temporary or official. If they have new servers. It means your display will be broken and I need to work this out.

Please, be patient I will find the solution.

Edit: Found the bug and submitted new version to microsoft. Will be update to 1.0.6 this night I think.
I think S2 may be changing their servers soon... well, can't wait to see them to have a more stable gadget :)

The new problem right now is that this website: http://www.honage.net/ladder/ where I gather the rank. It seems like they changed their website. So I need to change the way I take the rank from them. All that said, I'm quite annoyed to adjust to every single change honage do to their website and S2 do to their stats servers. I can't wait for S2 to provide us with stable stats server. They said to me that it would be in the next couple of days.

Well, the game is in BETA and trying to do a stable gadget in a BETA environement is difficult. I appreciate your patience and I will work on this issue.

good work. Yes we made an update yesterday. I can give you a XML API to get stats and the rank as long as S2 don't have any API like that. Just leave me a message or send me an email to redox@honage.net .

I know how difficult it is to be up to date ;) . I saw some changes at the masterserver like adding a team based skill rating. I'm looking forward to their updates.

Is there a wasy to change this Gadget in the way its updating.
The whole Gadget turns into white when its updating. But the background textures needs no updates ^^
The thing is, i always thought there is a programm which want to tell me some information because there is something new white for a second...

So maybe it can be changed that the background don't get white when the stats are updating?

You are absolutely right Fitzfuchs.
This is something I don't do correclty. The WHOLE gadget update each 10 mins. I tried things to only update the stats but I was unable to. I tried to show a "nice" gif animation with a loading text but was also unable to.

However, I am trying to find a way to change this and I will do it.
This will be change for sure in the future update.

Thank you for the feedback. Being able to see right away your friend list when you are on your desktop (and not in the game) could be a nice update. However, I have absolutely no idea where I could gather this info. And I think that if I ever have access to it, you will need for sure to log in in my gadget, instead of only typing your name.

This feature will be for sure in my ToDo list, but I think I won't be able to do this....

Right now, because we have access to http://replays.heroesofnewerth.com, I think I can gather my information and statistics right from the S2 servers. I need to find who can provide me this information and if it is ok for me to gather info from there.

So my next important update will be:
1- Gather my info from the S2 servers.
2- Update more correctly my gadget so it won't turn white and also bug the flyout display (if the gadget update when you look at your complete user info, the display disappear)

I talked with my stats provider (Honage.net) and he will fix this issue very soon. So you guys don't need to update anything, but simply wait a bit.

I will work on new version soon to offer nicer interface and more options. The new version should be more stable also. If one server is not working properly, the gadget will temporarily check on another one. So you should always see something.

Problem is when I first did this gadget my tibia was broken in 2 pieces and I had nothing else to do during the day without being able to move.

This update at least take care of the retail addition and the rating from Single Match Making.

About the 10 min refresh that doesn't work, it is probably because the HoN servers are not updated and I can't go faster then they do! You need to wait that their servers have the stats. I will add an option to refresh more often.

Right now I merge the PSR and SMR together, also the W/L and KD ratio.

Let me know if you guys want options to display only one type of rating. Like a drop down box: PSR only, SMR only, Both.

You can fix a typo in "SMR" mode there is "K/D/A" in "PSR" mode there is "KDA". Nothing big, but should be fixed I guess.

About the rank, this is a very good question and I am quite annoyed by this. Currently I get the rank from http://www.Honage.net. I think this rank check the PSR + SMR rating. Maiden's also have a rank (different value from Honage). However, it is also a PSR + SRM rank. I haven't found any site that give a rank for PSR vs SMR. If you do find one, please give it to me.

I would love to have this value from the official S2 servers, but they don't give it!!! I don't know why :'(

I created a thread in the forums, I send an email to support team at HoN and I sent a private message to the dev that take care of the xml stats server.

I had no answers from HoN about it.

I am sorry but I don't see how this could be done...
The only way right now is to open the HoN stats page from the flyout menu, which is not really convenient.

However, if someone has a good idea, I will be pleased to look at it.

The S2 XML Stats API Server is in maintenance since the DDoS attacks. according to some S2 guy it will be up soon (tm) after they move to their new hosting family in the next days.
